Treats sudden, severe pain in the heart and abdomen, feeling like being pierced by an awl. Also treats distension and fullness caused by retained food and cold accumulation.
*Ba Dou* (Croton Seed) [Remove skin, core, and endoderm; use *Ba Dou Shuang* (Croton Frost) 1 qian.] *Gan Jiang* (Dried Ginger) [Raw, 2 qian] *Da Huang* (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) [3 qian]
The above three herbs are ground into powder. Form pills with refined white honey, size of small beans. Administer with warm water, 20–30 pills per dose. Contraindicated in pregnancy. Note: *Beiji Wan* is a harsh medicine for treating cold-solid accumulation. In cases where *Shanghan* (Cold Damage) heat transmits to the Stomach Fu, presenting with yellow-black cracked tongue coating and red, dry lips and mouth, misuse will certainly be fatal because *Ba Dou* is greatly hot and damages Yin. The same applies to other formulas such as *Bai San*, *Bai Bing Zi*, *Xiao Ji Wan*, *Shen Bao Wan*, and *Jiu Zhu Wan*. One must be cautious. *Shen Bao Wan* and *Jiu Zhu Wan* are recorded under the section on Food Retention; *Yang Qi Wan* is listed below. They are not repeated here.
*Bai San* (from *Yu Han Jing*) Treats Cold-Solid Jueyin Chest Bind.
Take *Beiji Wan*, remove *Gan Jiang* and *Da Huang*. Use *Ba Dou Shuang* (Croton Frost) 1 qian, add *Jie Geng Lu* (Platycodon Root Tip) and *Bei Mu* (Fritillaria Bulb) each 3 qian. Grind into powder. Mix with *Bai Yin* (rice decoction) and take half a qian. Reduce dose for frail patients.
*Lei Shi Qian Jin Wan* Treats chest distension and pain caused by cold accumulation.
Add *Yan Xiao* (Saltpeter) and *Gui Xin* (Cinnamon Twig Heart) to *Beiji Wan*.
*Bai Bing Zi* Treats pediatric abdominal masses (*Pi Ji*), coughing upon nursing, and vomiting of phlegm-saliva.
Take *Beiji Wan*, remove *Gan Jiang* and *Da Huang*. Take 20 seeds of *Ba Dou* to make frost. Add *Hua Shi* (Talcum), *Qing Fen* (Calomel), *Ban Xia* (Pinellia Tuber), and *Nan Xing* (Arisaema Rhizome) each 1 qian. Pound together into powder. Form pills with rice gruel, size of mung beans, shaped into cakes.
Take 2–3 cakes per dose, administered with scallion white decoction.
*Xiao Ji Wan* Treats pediatric food retention fever and sour-smelling stool.
Take *Beiji Wan*, remove *Gan Jiang* and *Da Huang*. Take 20 seeds of *Ba Dou* to make frost. Add 9 cloves of *Ding Xiang* (Clove) and 12 seeds of *Suo Sha Ren* (Amomum Fruit). Pound together into powder. Use flesh of 3 rotten *Wu Mei* (Mume Fruit) to form paste pills, size of millet grains.
Take 3–5 pills per dose, administered with warm water.
Treats Excess-Heat of the Triple Burner, restlessness, and constipation.
*Huang Lian* (Coptis Rhizome) [Boiled in wine] *Huang Qin* (Scutellaria Root) [Stir-fried in wine] *Da Huang* (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) [Soaked in wine, equal parts]
Steep in two sheng of *Ma Fei Tang* (boiling water) until bubbles resemble hemp seeds. Squeeze out the dregs after a moment. Divide into two warm doses. *Ma Fei Tang* refers to plain water boiled vigorously until it bubbles like hemp seeds. Ancient formulas use this method only for fire-descending herbs.
*San Huang Wan* Treats unresolved various excess-heats.
Grind *San Huang Tang* into powder. Form pills with refined white honey, size of wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, administered with *Ma Fei Tang* on an empty stomach.
*Jin Hua Tang* Treats internal entrapment of heat-toxin.
Remove *Da Huang* from *San Huang Tang*, add *Huang Bo* (Phellodendron Bark). Decoct equal parts of the three herbs. If *Zhi Zi* (Gardenia Fruit) is added, it is named *Zhi Zi Jin Hua Tang*.
*San Bu Wan* Treats unremitting extreme hyperactivity of Yin-fire.
Grind *Jin Hua Tang* into powder. Form pills with honey and take.
*Huang Lian Jie Du Tang* Treats heat-pathogen flourishing both internally and externally.
Remove *Da Huang* from *San Huang Tang*, add *Huang Bo* (Phellodendron Bark) and *Shan Zhi* (Gardenia Fruit). Decoct equal parts.
*Jin Hua Wan* Treats unresolved accumulated heat.
Grind *Huang Lian Jie Du Tang* into powder. Form pills with honey and take.
*Da Jin Hua Wan* Treats middle jiao fullness, extreme heat, strangury, urinary retention, and hematuria.
Add *Huang Bo* (Phellodendron Bark) in equal parts to *San Huang Wan*. Drop water to form pills, size of small beans. Take 30 pills with fresh drawn cold water. Note: *Jin Hua Tang* contains only *Huang Qin*, *Huang Lian*, and *Huang Bo*. When made into pills, it is called *San Bu Jin Hua Wan*; when compared to the decoction, it adds *Zhi Zi*, and the decoction name becomes *Jie Du*. Adding *Da Huang* makes it *Da Jin Hua Wan*. Although decoctions and pills differ in form, their functions are not significantly different; decoctions are used for rapid attack, while pills are used for gradual elimination, which is a slight distinction.
*Da Huang Huang Lian Xie Xin Tang* (*Yu Han Jing*, i.e., *Huang Lian Xie Xin Tang*) Treats heat-pathogen sinking inward, hypochondriac fullness and bind.
Remove *Huang Qin* from *San Huang Tang*. Steep in *Ma Fei Tang*, squeeze juice, and take.
*Fu Zi Xie Xin Tang* (*Yu Han Jing*) Treats disharmony of cold and heat, hypochondriac binding and knotting.
Decoct *San Huang Tang* separately. Prepare juice of cooked *Fu Zi* (Aconite Lateral Root) separately. Mix evenly and take.
*San Huang Zhi Zi Chi Tang* Treats febrile diseases and epidemics, headache, and high fever.
Combine *San Huang Tang* with *Zhi Zi Chi Tang*. (*Qian Jin Fang* removes *Huang Qin* and adds *Huang Bo*).
*Dang Gui Liu Huang Tang* Treats night sweats due to deficiency-heat of Ying-Blood.
Remove *Da Huang* from *San Huang Tang*. Add *Huang Bo* (Phellodendron Bark), *Huang Qi* (Astragalus Root), *Sheng Di Huang* (Rehmannia Root), *Shu Di Huang* (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and *Dang Gui* (Angelica Sinensis Root). (Wang Shishan's version removes *Huang Bo* and adds *Pu Huang* (Typha Pollen)).
*Qing Xin Wan* Treats mental confusion and palpitations due to Heart-Heat.
Remove *Da Huang* from *San Huang Tang*. Use *Huang Lian* (Coptis Rhizome) 3 qian, *Huang Qin* (Scutellaria Root) 2 qian. Add *Xi Niu Huang* (Buffalo Calculus) half a qian, *Yu Jin* (Curcuma Radix) half a qian. Form pills with pig heart blood, size of millet grains.
Coat with *Zhu Sha* (Cinnabar). Administer with *Deng Xin Cao* (Juncus Effusus) decoction. Thirty pills for a three-year-old child.
*Ji Ji Jie Du Tang* Treats upper heat and lower cold, with large bowel constipation.
Add *Gan Cao* (Licorice Root), *Jie Geng* (Platycodon Root), *Chai Hu* (Bupleurum Root), *Sheng Ma* (Cimicifuga Rhizome), *Lian Qiao* (Forsythia Fruit), and *Dang Gui* (Angelica Sinensis Root) to *San Huang Tang*.
*Ren Zhong Huang Wan* Treats various heat-toxins of warm epidemics.
The base formula uses *Da Huang* (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) 3 liang, *Huang Qin* and *Huang Lian* each 1 liang. Add *Ren Zhong Huang* (Human Waste Charcoal), *Cang Zhu* (Atractylodes Rhizome), *Jie Geng* (Platycodon Root), and *Hua Shi* (Talcum) each 2 liang, *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Root) 1 liang, *Fang Feng* (Saposhnikovia Root) 5 qian, *Xiang Fu* (Cyperus Rhizome) 1.5 liang. Form pills with *Shen Qu* (Medicated Leaven). Take 2–3 qian with *Qing Re Jie Du Tang* (Clear Heat and Detoxify Decoction). (See *Bai Hu Tang* below for formula).
This formula specifically uses *Yi Fang Yin San Huang* (Three Yellows) to strongly resolve damp-heat epidemic pathogens. Its subtlety lies entirely in *Ren Zhong Huang*. Using its foul nature to attract similar qi, it directly clears foul heat-toxin in the Middle and Upper Jiao. Combined with *Hua Shi* and *Yi Yuan San*, it also clears and leaches the water passages. *Cang Zhu* and *Xiang Fu* are used to ventilate the stagnation of the six qi. *Jie Geng* is used to clear the qi above the diaphragm. *Fang Feng* is used to open the muscle interstices for heat. These ten pathogen-dispersing and detoxifying herbs cannot exert their rapid sweeping power without *Ren Shen* to boost the righteous qi. *Shen Qu* is used for pill formation to retain the medicine in the middle jiao and facilitate digestion. It is further necessary to administer with *Qing Re Jie Du Tang*, or combine *Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang* with *Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang*, remove *Jing Mi* (Rice), add *Qiang Huo* (Notopterygium Rhizome), *Huang Qin*, *Huang Lian*, and *Sheng Di Huang* to comprehensively resolve internal and external heat. A slight amount of *Sheng Jiang* (Fresh Ginger) is borrowed for its acridity to circulate the properties of all herbs and disperse toxins in all meridians.
*San Huang Shi Gao Tang* Treats febrile diseases and pandemics with great internal and external heat.
Remove *Da Huang* from *San Huang Tang*. Add *Huang Bo* (Phellodendron Bark), *Shan Zhi* (Gardenia Fruit), *Shi Gao* (Gypsum Fibrosum), *Ma Huang* (Ephedra Stem), *Xiang Chi* (Fermented Soybean), *Sheng Jiang* (Fresh Ginger), and *Cong Bai* (Scallion White). Decoct with *Qing Jiang Shui* (sour grain water). If no sweat occurs after half a day, take again. For constipation, remove *Ma Huang* and *Xiang Chi*, add *Da Huang* and *Mang Xiao* (Mirabilite). Jie An's hammering method adds a pinch of sprouted tea. Note: This is essentially *Jie Du Tang*, combining the methods of *Tong Sheng San* and *Zhi Zi Chi Tang*, adding *Ma Huang*, *Shi Gao*, scallion, and ginger to dispel internal and external heat-toxins. If the pulse is rapid and solid, with constipation, panting, curled tongue, and contracted scrotum, remove *Ma Huang* and *Xiang Chi* and substitute with *Xiao* (Mirabilite) and *Huang* (Rhubarb), fully utilizing *Yi Fang Yin San Huang*.
*Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin* Treats Da Tou Wen (Big Head Plague) and Nian Jing Wen (Neck Twisting Plague).
Remove *Da Huang* from *San Huang Tang*. Add *Chai Hu* (Bupleurum Root), *Hei Shen* (Black Ginseng), *Lian Qiao* (Forsythia Fruit), *Shu Niu* (Burdock Fruit), *Sheng Ma* (Cimicifuga Rhizome), *Bai Zhi* (Angelica Dahurica Root), *Gan Cao* (Licorice Root), *Jie Geng* (Platycodon Root), *Ma Bo* (Fly Agaric), *Jiang Can* (Bombyx Batryticatus), and *Ban Lan Gen* (Isatis Root). Half is decocted in water, half is formed into honey pills for holding in the mouth. For Qi deficiency and weak pulse, add *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Root) 5–7 fen. For large bowel constipation, add *Jiu Da Huang* (Wine-processed Rhubarb) about 1 qian for mild purgation. Removing *Sheng Ma*, *Hei Shen*, *Shu Niu*, *Jiang Can*, *Ban Lan Gen*, and *Ma Bo* from this formula, and adding *Jing Jie* (Schizonepeta Spike), *Fang Feng* (Saposhnikovia Root), *Qiang Huo* (Notopterygium Rhizome), *Zhi Ke* (Aurantium Fructus), *Chuan Xiong* (Ligusticum Rhizome), and *She Ye* (Belamcanda Rhizome), names it *Qin Lian Xiao Du Tang*.
*Dang Gui Long Hui Wan* Treats accumulated heat in the Liver Meridian, manifesting as occasional palpitations and convulsions, mental unrest, dizziness, throat and diaphragm obstruction, dry intestinal constipation, agitation, and mania.
Add *Dang Gui* (Angelica Sinensis Root), *Long Dan* (Gentiana Root), *Lu Hui* (Aloe), *Zhi Zi* (Gardenia Fruit), *Qing Dai* (Indigo Naturalis), *Mu Xiang* (Aucklandia Root), and *She Xiang* (Musk) to *San Huang Tang*. Form pills with honey. Take 20–30 pills with dilute ginger soup.
*Shen Xiong Wan* Treats edema with excess conditions both internally and externally.
The base formula uses *Da Huang* and *Huang Qin* each 2 liang, *Huang Lian* half a liang. Add *Hua Shi* (Talcum) and *Qian Niu Tou Mo* (Morning Glory Seed Powder) each 4 liang, *Chuan Xiong* (Ligusticum Rhizome) and *Bo He* (Mint Leaf) each half a liang.
Drop water to form pills. Take 5–7 pills, up to 15 pills, with warm water before bed. For damp-heat causing swelling and fullness of waist and hypochondrium, add *Gan Sui* (Kansui Root) 1 liang. For wandering pain throughout the body, add *Bai Jie Zi* (White Mustard Seed) 1 liang. For chronic toxic heat-swelling and abdominal pain, add *Mang Xiao* (Mirabilite) 1 liang. For joint stiffness, add *Qiang Huo* (Notopterygium Rhizome) 1 liang. For intestinal stagnation, add *Yu Li Ren* (Prunus Seed) 1 liang. For heavy waist and legs, add *Shang Lu* (Phytolacca Root) 1 liang. Removing *Huang Lian*, *Chuan Xiong*, and *Bo He* from this formula names it *Dao Shui Wan*. Dai Ren transformed *Yi Fang Yin San Huang Wan* into *Shen Xiong Wan*, instructing patients to first take over 100 pills at night, followed by *Jun Chuan San*, expecting defecation at dawn. Various pathogens are expelled. After administering a small amount, take harmonizing diaphragm medicines, aiming for purgation. Some have one purge every five days, some every three days. Mild cases stop after one or two doses; severe cases require five or six purges. This is the subtlety of controlling speed and tension, adapting to the disease. It cannot be fully explained by words. Only those with extensive experience dare to imitate this practice. The detailed formula states taking 5–7 to 15 pills, which is the established method of using harsh drugs gently. Here, taking over 100 pills first is to swiftly sweep pathogens while vital qi is intact. Both have their rationale and should not hinder each other.
*Jun Chuan San* Treats edema and urgent distension, inability to pass stool, representing severe excess and fullness.
Remove *Huang Qin* and *Huang Lian* from *San Huang Wan*. Use *Da Huang* 1 liang. Add *Qian Niu Tou Mo* (Morning Glory Seed Powder) and *Yu Li Ren* (Prunus Seed) each 1 liang, *Mang Xiao* (Mirabilite) and *Gan Sui* (Kansui Root) each half a liang, *Mu Xiang* (Aucklandia Root) 3 qian.
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Mix with natural juice of *Sheng Jiang* (Fresh Ginger) to a thin paste consistency and take. Note: This is a harsh drug for draining water accumulation. When fire-heat is constrained, water fluids cannot circulate, stagnating to generate damp-heat. If not removed from the Yang aspect, it transforms qi into distension; if not removed from the Yin aspect, it transforms into masses. Laypeople do not understand the *Nei Jing* principle "attack what remains." They stick to drying tonics, worsening constraint and aggravating the disease. Dai Ren said: Nourishing life and attacking disease are fundamentally different. People today treat disease with tonics, hence ineffectiveness.
