Lichang (Ecliptae Herba). Also known as Jinling Cao.
Sweet, sour, and cool. Enters the blood level of the Foot-Shaoyin meridian. Cools the blood and nourishes yin. Treats zangdu (visceral toxin, often referring to bloody stool or hemorrhoids due to damp-heat in the intestines), clears kidney heat. For moxibustion sores with excessive bleeding that does not stop, applying it externally stops the bleeding immediately. (When the blood is cooled, various diseases are eliminated.) Combined with Cheqiancao (Plantaginis Semen/Herba), treats hematuria. Combined with Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), treats heat dysentery. Assisted by Lüdou (Vigna radiata), treats heat-induced abdominal distension. Added to hot wine, treats hemorrhoids. (Use the juice mixed with wine.)
Promotes diuresis when decocted with tongbian (urine of a prepubescent boy). To prevent stomach damage, steam it with jiangzhi (ginger juice). Taken as powder, treats zangdu. Contraindicated for those with weak spleen/stomach and loose stools, or kidney qi deficiency and cold.
Bitter, cool. Enters the qi level of the Foot-Shaoyin, Hand-Yangming, Hand-Shaoyin, and Foot-Jueyin meridians. Drains blood heat from the six meridians, dissipates swelling and toxicity of various sores, promotes diuresis and unblocks menstruation, kills parasites, and discharges pus. Paired with Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), drains heart fire. Assisted by Zhima (Sesamum indicum) powder, treats luoli (scrofula). Used with Shuniu (Arctii Fructus), treats smallpox toxin. Combined with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), treats madao (scrofula/lymphadenitis). After ulceration of carbuncles and sores, if heat is due to deficiency, both [bitter-cool agents] are contraindicated.
Name: Lianyao.
Bitter, cold. Descends heat qi. Specifically treats jaundice caused by stagnant heat in shanghan (cold damage diseases), guiding damp-heat out through urination.
Bitter, sweet, cold. Enters the Foot-Jueyin meridian. Descends fire and resolves toxicity, enabling broken blood to return to the meridians. Heals dingzhong (carbuncles) and jinchuang (metal wounds), eliminates pain and distension from bieja (abdominal masses), resolves poisoning from various drugs, stops epidemic fever and mania, clears sudden red eye, reduces high fever in children. With xiongshufen (male rat feces), treats yinyangyi (relapse after sexual intercourse following recovery from cold damage). Paired with Chuanbai (Phellodendri Cortex) powder, applied to ergan (auricular furuncle). Assisted by Duanshi Wan, treats pi-se (obstruction/stagnation). (Mixed with paste.) Added with Shexiang (Moschus) and Xionghuang (Realgar), applied to spider bites. Crushed for juice, applied to lip sores. Contraindicated for those with deficiency-type diarrhea.
Strange case: Spider bite on the head. After one night, two red lines appear at the bite site, thin as chopsticks, winding up the neck, descending from the chest to the heart. After two nights, the head and face swell and hurt, swollen like bowls holding several sheng (ancient unit of volume), abdomen gradually swells, nearly fatal. Take one bowl of Lan Ye (Isatidis Folium) juice, throw the spider into it; it dies upon entering the juice. Take another bowl of Lan Ye juice, add Shexiang and Xionghuang, throw in another spider; it dissolves into water. Immediately apply this mixture to the bite site. Within two days, all symptoms subside, leaving a small sore that heals.
