(21 types of fragrant woods)
Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed)
Pungent, neutral, slightly cool. Enters the Qi aspect of the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Calms the five Zang organs, soothes the Shen (Spirit), nourishes Heart Qi, stabilizes palpitations and fright, relieves deficiency-type constipation, and treats convulsive epilepsy. With a small amount of Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root), it raises Kidney Qi to communicate with the Heart. Combined with Song Zi (Pine Nut) and Ma Ren (Hemp Seed), it treats elderly people's deficiency-type constipation.
Remove the husk, stir-fry, and grind into powder. Spread the powder on paper, cover with heavy paper, and gently heat with an iron. Change the paper three times until no oil stains remain, then use for decoction.
Boiling in Huang Jing (Polygonatum Rhizome) juice before stir-frying is also excellent. Contraindicated in cases of excessive phlegm, floating Lung Qi, loose stools, and stomach deficiency with nausea.
Ce Bai Ye (Biota Twig)
Bitter, astringent, slightly warm. Enters the Blood aspect of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Nourishes Yin and clears the Lungs, stops bleeding and harmonizes Yang, generates flesh, and kills parasites. Clears rebellious Qi and fire, applied topically for scalds and burns. With Chuan Lian (Coptis Rhizome), it treats hematuria. With Pomegranate Flower, ground into powder and insufflated into the nose, it treats persistent epistaxis. With Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), and Ma Tong Zhi (Horse Manure Juice), it treats persistent hematemesis. Combined with Bai Shao (White Peony Root), it treats continuous menstruation. Assisted by Huai Hua (Sophora Flower), it treats lower gastrointestinal bleeding.
Used raw: cooling. Used roasted: warming.
Song Zhi (Pine Resin)
Sweet, bitter, warm. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Dispels wind and overcomes dampness, eliminates pathogens and directs Qi downward. Decocted into ointment, it generates flesh, stops pain, expels pus, and dispels wind. Combined with copper filings, sprinkled on golden wound bleeding. Charred, applied to knife wounds to stop bleeding.
Contraindicated in blood deficiency.
Song Jie (Pine Joint)
Bitter, warm. Dries dampness in the blood, eliminates wind between bone joints. With Ru Xiang (Olibanum) and Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit), it treats muscle spasms and cramps.
Song Hua (Pine Flower)
Sweet, warm. Moistens the Heart and Lungs, dispels wind, stops bleeding. Combined with Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Pu Huang (Typha Pollen), it treats high fever after childbirth. Steamed with human milk to moisten the Lungs.
Excessive consumption causes heat in the Upper Jiao.
Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark)
Pungent, warm. Treats Feng Du Ben Tun (Wind-toxin running piglet syndrome), removes abdominal distension and fullness, and treats Hong Kong Jiao rushing to the heart (severe gouty arthritis affecting the heart).
Averse to raw Scallion and Lithospermum.
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig)
Sweet, pungent, hot. Slightly toxic. Enters the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and concurrently the Blood aspect of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Supplements the Minister Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life), unblocks Yin constriction above and below, raises Yang Qi to interact with the Middle Jiao, opens orifices to expel Yin turbidity, receives Qi from Shaoyang returning to the Liver, pacifies Liver pathogenic factors, supports and benefits Spleen Earth, and is suitable for treating all diseases caused by deficiency-cold. (It specifically warms the interior of the Ying (Nutrient) aspect and has no relation to diseases of the body shell and meridians.) With Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), and Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), it regulates the Middle and benefits Qi. With Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Zi Shi Ying (Hematitum), and Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), it treats vomiting and rebellion. Dipped in Rooster Liver, it treats enuresis. When combined with Yang-tonifying herbs, it induces sweating. When combined with Blood-invigorating herbs, it requires removing the bark, avoiding fire, grinding into powder, and swallowing. If added to decoctions, it must be added after other herbs are decocted, boiled for 5-6 boils, then poured out for administration. Contraindicated in cases of phlegm-cough with sore throat, blood deficiency with internal dryness, pregnancy, and postpartum blood-heat.
Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) rescues Yang within Yin; Rou Gui rescues Yang within Yang. Because Cinnamon's nature is light and ascending, it can move horizontally to the exterior, traversing all vessels.
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig)
Pungent, sweet, slightly hot. Enters the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian, and concurrently the Qi aspect of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Unblocks blood vessels, reaches Ying and Wei (Nutrient and Defensive aspects), dispels wind-cold, induces sweat to expel pathogens, serving as a supreme remedy for internal heat with external cold, and acts as a guide for treating shoulder and arm conditions. With Fu Ling (Poria), it controls upward invasion of Water Qi to protect the Heart. With Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), it guides Kidney pathogens out through the meridians to the exterior. Combined with Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), it turns the pivot of Shaoyang. Assisted by Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), it raises Yang from the Yin meridians. Assisted by Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), it opens the constraint of Yangming. Guided by Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), it harmonizes the stagnation of exterior pathogens.
Avoid contact with iron tools. Soak in Licorice juice, bake dry, and use. Contraindicated in Yin-blood deficiency, chronic blood disorders, absence of external cold pathogens, and internal excess of Yang Qi. (Shanghan Lun states: "Once Gui Zhi enters the throat, if Yang is in excess, death ensues.")
