Cortex Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Changpu), Coptis Chinensis Rhizome (Huanglian), Typha Pollen (Puhuang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), and Huanghuan. It is aversive to Wushizhi (Five-Stone Earth).
Acrid, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It unblocks the nine orifices, facilitates the joints, ascends to the head, and disperses wind-heat in the Upper Jiao. When combined with Mentha Haplocalyx Herba (Bohe) and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), it treats runny clear nasal discharge. When combined with Phellodendron Amurense Bark (Chuanbai) and Concha Ostreae (Muli), it treats rhinorrhea resembling pus (Bi Yuan).
Remove the heart and pubescence, soak in Licorice Decoction (Gancao Tang) and stir-fry, or soak in Banana Juice (Bajiao Shui), then dry by baking for use. It is contraindicated in cases of Qi deficiency and excessive fire.
Fire must be strictly avoided.
Acrid, bitter, warm. Enters the Kidney and Mingmen (Gate of Vitality). It treats cold below and heat above, dissipates wind-water swelling and toxicity. It wards off pestilential influences, disperses stagnation and accumulation, descends phlegm-qi, treats vomiting and diarrhea, unblocks collaterals, and dispels cold-dampness. When obtained with Aucklandia Root (Muxiang), it treats retention of urine due to bladder dysfunction (Bao Zhuan). When assisted by Cistanche Deserticola Stem (Rongsheng), it treats constipation due to large intestine deficiency-cold. When assisted by Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi), it can guide qi back to the kidney.
It may be used in decoctions or ground into juice. It is contraindicated in cases of Middle-Jiao Qi deficiency, Yin-blood depletion, and water deficiency with flaming fire.
It fears Curcuma Longa Rhizome (Yujin). Fire is taboo.
Acrid, hot. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Yangming Meridian [Text says 'Foot-Yang-Yang', likely a typo for Yangming]. It drains lung pathogens, warms stomach qi, neutralizes alcohol toxicity, and removes cold diarrhea. When combined with Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi), it treats Ben Tun (rushing gas). When paired with Sugarcane (Ganzhe) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi), it treats dry retching. It is contraindicated in three conditions: excess blood and qi, excessive fire causing vomiting, and excessive bad breath. (When spleen has stagnant fire overflowing into the lungs, losing its clear and harmonious qi, turbid qi ascends, resulting in bad breath.)
Cinnamon Twig (Rougui) is warm and can release the exterior; Clove (Dingxiang) is warm and can harmonize the stomach.
Fire is taboo.
Acrid, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. It wards off evil and removes malodor. It eliminates heart pain, stops cholera-like disorder (Huo Luan), disperses cold accumulation, and resolves qi knots. In summer, carrying it in a sachet can ward off foul odors.
White Sandalwood (Baitan) harmonizes Wei (Defensive) qi and benefits the diaphragm. Red Sandalwood (Zitan) harmonizes Ying (Nutritive) blood and reduces swelling and toxicity. It is contraindicated in cases of ulcerated carbuncles and Yin deficiency.
Acrid, warm. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. It enters the Blood level to descend qi, treats bleeding caused by anger, heals traumatic injuries from metal weapons, promotes muscle regeneration, reduces swelling and toxicity, and treats hypochondriac pain. Select the red part, grind, and use.
