[Eight Species of Scaleless Fish]
Seven-Star Fish (Characterized by seven spots on the head)
It can guide the momentum of overflowing water, thereby conforming to the nature of stability and abundance. It can eliminate wind pathogens from secluded yin areas, thereby supporting a flaccid and weak constitution. Therefore, it is suitable for individuals with deficient constitutions, the elderly, and pregnant women suffering from wind-dampness and edema.
Gallbladder
Used for treating eye disorders in the same manner as carp gallbladder. However, for treating throat bi (sore throat with obstruction), this fish's gallbladder is superior.
While the gallbladders of most fish are bitter, only this one is sweet. Collected in the twelfth lunar month and dried in the shade.
Contraindicated with Ginkgo seeds.
Sweet, neutral. Dispels wind and extinguishes parasites. Treats zhu qi (a contagious chronic wasting disease), deficiency damage, and lao zhai (pulmonary tuberculosis).
Pregnant women should avoid consumption. Those with black spots on the lower abdomen and white spots on the back possess severe toxicity and must not be eaten.
[Another Species]
Sweet, warm. Tonifies the middle jiao and benefits blood. Unblocks meridians and collaterals, eliminates wind-dampness. For deafness, epistaxis (nosebleed), and corneal nebula after smallpox/variolous eruptions, applying its blood directly to the affected area leads to spontaneous recovery. Mix blood with scallion juice and apply to chi you feng (acute erysipelas-like skin infection). Mix blood with musk and apply to facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes).
Contraindicated after illness. Black ones are toxic and inedible.
Head
Stops dysentery and removes痞 masses (abdominal fullness/lumps).
Refers to Sepiae Endoconcha (Cuttlebone)
Adversely reacts with Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji), Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian), and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi). Can subdue sand worms.
Salty, slightly warm. Enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Promotes blood circulation, dispels cold-dampness. Treats bloody dysentery, eliminates phlegm-malaria, and treats red-and-white leukorrhea, genital erosion with swelling and pain, abdominal pain caused by fright qi entering the abdomen encircling the umbilicus. Combined with Deer Antler Glue (Lurong) and Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea. Paired with Cinnabar (Chensha) and yellow beeswax, treats red corneal nebula growing over the pupil. Paired with Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Dihuang), treats persistent hematuria. Paired with Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), decocted and taken orally, treats blood masses (xue jia). Paired with fried Puerariae Flos (Puhuang), applied topically to the tongue, stops spurting lingual hemorrhage. Paired with Egg Yolk (Jizi Huang), applied to hypertrophied tongue or thrush; ground Verdigris (Tonglv), treats blood-wind red eyes; mixed with white honey, instilled into eyes to treat floating nebula. (Also stops lacrimation.) Mixed with Sophorae Flos (Huaihua) and insufflated into the nose, stops epistaxis. Added with musk and insufflated into the ear. Must be roasted before use.
[Another Species]
Sweet, warm. Slightly toxic. Strengthens yang function, promotes lactation, pushes out toxins during variolous eruptions, treats bie jia (abdominal mass resembling a turtle shell). Paired with Minium (Huadan), freshly ground and applied, treats blood-wind sores. Added with ginger and scallion, boiled in soy sauce, used to induce vomiting for wind-phlegm. Pounded with glutinous rice into a paste, applied to insect abscesses. Freshly ground, applied to red-and-white wandering wind rashes.
