To treat toothache, use the bark of the white poplar tree (Populus alba) ground into powder. Take three qian per dose, mix with hot wine, hold in the mouth for rinsing and gargling, then swallow. Alternatively, rinse the mouth with hot water containing dried alum (Alumen).
Another prescription: Take one honeycomb (Apis), place it in a small bowl, burn it from within the holes until charred, grind into powder, apply to the painful area of the teeth, and rinse with salt water, spitting it out.
Another prescription: Collect the white juice from the head of a toad (Bufo gargarizans), apply it to cotton wool, dry in the shade, take a grain-of-rice-sized amount, and insert it into the dental gap. If the gum root is swollen, it must be pricked with a needle to bleed.
Another prescription: Take red beans (Vigna angularis), grind a small amount, and insufflate into the nose.
Another prescription: Take wild coriander (Coriandrum sativum var. glaucum), slightly crush it, and insert it into the nose.
Another prescription: Take old loofah sponge (Luffa cylindrica) killed by frost, burn it until carbonized but retaining its medicinal properties (Cinnabarite Luffae Fructus Carbonisatus), grind into powder, and apply to the painful area; pain stops immediately.
Another prescription: Take bamboo borers' waste (Bambusa vulgaris residue) and dried tangerine peel (Citrus reticulata) each at one liang, and meat of dark plum (Prunus mume) ground into paste; apply to the painful area.
Another prescription: Take one bar of soap, remove the inner pulp, insert Shanlai (likely referring to a local herb or resin, possibly related to Styrax or similar aromatic resins), Nardostachys chinensis (Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma) each at three fen, and an appropriate amount of Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxyllum bungeanum) and salt, filling the soap completely. Wrap externally with dough, refine over fire until red, take out, grind into fine powder. Apply and rinse daily; wind-worm toothache will cease.
Another prescription: To treat wind-toothache, take one pig's tooth soap pod (Gleditsia sinensis), chop it into two pieces on a threshold, boil one zhan of sour vinegar until rolling, let cool to warm temperature, and rinse the mouth; this is highly effective.
To treat worm-bored toothache: Wash fresh leek (Allium tuberosum) with roots clean, pound thoroughly, mix evenly with mud from household floors, insert into the cavity of the bored tooth. Then paste paper on the cheek over the painful area. After two shi (approx. 4 hours), remove the paper; carefully inspect, and tiny worms will be visible on the mud. This can eliminate the root cause of the disease.
Another prescription: For unbearable worm-toothache, named "Yi Xiao San" (Smile Powder): Grind pepper seeds (Zanthoxyllum bungeanum seed) into powder. Take one bean of croton (Croton tiglium), grind into paste, form pills using rice flour, sized to fit the bore hole. Wrap in cotton wool and place inside the bore hole. Previously, a young man from Yueqing suffered from this, crying out so loudly that neighbors heard; various medicines failed, but this cured him.
To treat heat-induced abscess, swelling, pain, and bleeding of the teeth/gums: Crush willow branches (Salix spp.) to fill two bowls, crush locust tree branches (Robinia pseudoacacia) to fill two bowls, add one bowl of salt, plus two liang of green salt (Halitum), and eight bowls of well water. Boil in a pot until dry, stir-fry until crisp, grind into fine powder, and apply.

Another prescription: To treat gingival bleeding, use one liang of alum (Alumen), calcine and grind into powder. Apply half a qian under the gum root each time. If bleeding occurs in the teeth, decoct light bamboo leaf tea (Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens leaf) and rinse frequently.
Another prescription: Take a very large root of Angelica sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), remove head and tail, place inside a bamboo tube, pack tightly around it with white salt, seal the mouth with paper, burn over charcoal until carbonized (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Carbonisatus), grind into powder. Use to brush teeth and wash eyes. Swallow the saliva; this also darkens beard and hair.
Another prescription: Grind asphalt (Asphaltum) finely and apply to teeth to make them firm and strong.
