Refer to "Summerheat Syndrome" in the "Tetany-like Convulsions" chapter.
Pathogenic factors may originate from heavenly qi, such as rain and dew; from earthly qi, such as mud and water; from diet, such as wine, beverages, and cold or raw foods; or from human activities, such as sleeping in sweat-soaked clothes or lying on damp surfaces, for instance, when infants' clothing and swaddling clothes soiled with urine and feces after bathing are not dried promptly. Although the causes differ, they all fundamentally stem from Spleen Qi deficiency. There are two main treatment approaches: one addresses Damp-Heat, and the other addresses Cold-Dampness, covering all scenarios. When the disease presents with fever, it is classified as Damp-Heat syndrome, suitable for clearing heat and promoting diuresis; when the disease presents with excessive cold sensations, it is classified as Cold-Dampness syndrome, suitable for drying dampness and warming the interior.
Chai Ling Tang (Bupleurum and Poria Decoction): Treats fever, heavy body, irritability, thirst, dark and scanty urination, constipation, and a surging and slippery pulse, indicating Damp-Heat syndrome.
Ingredients: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, bleached), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria, each 1 qian), Qing Hua Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, greenish bark), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, each 0.5 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces). Decoct in water and take hot.
If both bowel movements and urination are obstructed, combine with external treatments; see the "Obstruction of Both Bowel Movements and Urination" section below.
Yin Chen Wu Ling Yin (Artemisiae Scopariae and Five-Ingredient Poria Decoction): Treats jaundice and fever caused by dampness invasion, accompanied by dark and scanty urination.
Ingredients: Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 2 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, bleached, 1 qian), Chi Ling (Red Poria, 1.5 qian), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 1 qian), Qing Hua Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, greenish bark), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 0.5 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces). Decoct in water and take.
The above formulas are all used to treat Damp-Heat syndrome.
Wei Ling Tang (Stomach and Poria Decoction): Treats headache heaviness, body heaviness, alternating chills and fever, abdominal distension, and diarrhea caused by Cold-Dampness. It can also harmonize water and earth, and regulate the Spleen and Stomach.
Ingredients: Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma,漂 washed), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger), Guang Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Yun Ling (Cloud Poria), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 1 qian), Qing Hua Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, greenish bark), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, each 0.5 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices). Decoct in water and take before meals. If vomiting is present, add Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba) and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), each 0.8 qian.
Wu Pi Yin (Five-Peel Decoction): This formula, combined with Wei Ling Tang, specifically treats edema caused by dampness invasion, with remarkable efficacy.
Ingredients: Sheng Jiang Pi (Zingiberis Pericarpium), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Fu Ling Pi (Poria Peridium), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex, each 2 qian), Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla, 10 strands), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces). Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach.
If there is no effect after taking several doses combined with Wei Ling Tang, warm-tonifying methods must be employed, such as Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) or Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill); choose appropriately.
Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill):
Ingredients: Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 8 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Yun Ling (Cloud Poria, each 4 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, wine-stir-fried), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 2 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, cooked, 1.5 liang), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, coarse bark removed, 1 liang).
Make pills using refined honey, sized like wu-tou seeds (approx. 6mm diameter). Take 3 qian per dose, swallowed with boiled water.
Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction): See the "Non-Tetanic Convulsions" section above.
