Dried loofah (Luffae Fructus) 4–5 liang, scallion white (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) 4 liang, and Juncus effusus (Tongcao, 灯草) 3 liang are decocted in water for bathing, and one or two small cups of the liquid are also drunk. For further details, see the section on "Swelling and Fullness" below.
(Detailed information can be found in the "Internal Medicine" section.)
To treat asthma caused by phlegm and qi obstruction: Take one cup of high-quality Sydney juice [Note: Likely a specific local ingredient or typo in original text, retained as is], half a cup of fresh ginger juice (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice), half a cup of honey (Melle), and one liang of fine peppermint powder (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). Mix evenly, place in a container, and simmer over boiling water (double-boil method) for about one hour. This formula is effective for resolving phlegm-qi that moves rapidly like a galloping horse. Another prescription: Roast loofah (Luffae Fructus) until it retains its medicinal properties (charred externally but retaining internal efficacy), grind into powder, and bind with jujube pulp (Ziziphi Jujubae Mesocarp) to make pills the size of a marble. Take with warm ginger tea (Zingiberis Rhizoma Decoction); this method resolves qi stagnation most swiftly and also stops coughing.
To treat wheezing/roaring sounds caused by vinegar or acidic food intake: Licorice root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 2 liang, peeled, cut into two-inch segments, split in half. Soak in the juice of three pig gallbladders (Sus Scrofa Domesticus Vesica Bile) for three days. Remove, dry over fire, grind into powder, and form into pills the size of mung beans using honey. Take two qian before bedtime each night, washed down with tea water; this yields miraculous results.
For all types of wheezing disorders, whether due to phlegm or food retention, especially those triggered by strong-flavored foods, this prescription is particularly effective: Steam radish seeds (Raphani Semen), dry them in the sun, and grind into powder. Mix equally with burnt pig tooth soap pod (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) that has been charred to retain efficacy. Grind both together into a fine powder, use ginger juice (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice) to make a paste and form pills the size of mung beans. Take twenty pills per dose, washed down with ginger tea.
Pediatric malnutrition syndrome (Gan Syndrome, 疳症) occurring before age sixteen is called Gan; after age sixteen, it is called Lao (Consumption, 痨病). Both result from weakness of the infant's primordial essence (Zhen Yuan, 真元), early introduction of solid foods, excessive consumption of rich and sweet foods, or overeating, leading to accumulation and transformation into Gan syndrome over time. It may also arise from irregularities in the wet nurse's body temperature (cold/heat imbalance), or nursing after emotional extremes (anger/joy) or sexual exertion. Additionally, excessive use of digestive herbs may damage stomach qi; or following severe illness involving vomiting, diarrhea, malaria, or dysentery, reduced food intake leads to malnourishment of the spleen and stomach. Although the causes differ, both ultimately归结 to deficiency (Xu, 虚). Symptoms include shiny and tight scalp, scorched and sparse hair, sunken cheeks and dry nose, pale lips, dim and ulcerated eyes, rubbing eyebrows and nose, hunched spine, yellowish complexion, teeth grinding, nail biting, irritability, thirst, spontaneous sweating, white urine, sour-smelling loose stools, abdominal pain, borborygmus, abdominal masses (Pi, 癖) with tidal fever, and intense craving for fruits, vegetables, salty items, charcoal, or cement. These are all signs of the condition. In the initial stage, Ji Sheng Wan (Collection of Sage Pills, 集圣丸) is the primary formula; if there are concurrent syndromes of the five zang organs, modifications are made according to circumstances. For chronic cases, Fei Er Wan (Fatten Child Pills, 肥儿丸) is used for regulation, employing tonification combined with resolution of accumulation. These contents are recorded in the book *You You Ji Cheng* (Complete Essentials for Children).
