Tai Jing (Fetal Startle) refers to symptoms occurring within the first month after birth, including fever (Wen Zhuang), upward deviation of the eyes, clenched fists, lockjaw with teeth grinding, rigidity of the body and waist, excessive salivation accompanied by vomiting, convulsions with startled crying, retraction of the cheeks, open fontanelles, redness of the cheeks, cyanosis of the face with closed eyes. In cases where eye closure is caused by fetal wind, it must not be mistaken for slow convulsion syndrome (Man Jing) treated with warming medicines. Instead, one should only employ methods to dissipate wind pathogens, relieve startle, resolve phlegm, and regulate Qi, along with applying patches to the fontanelle. For severe cases, Zhu Yin Wan (Cinnabar and Silver Pill) is indicated. If the newborn cannot take oral medication, a small amount of Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, 牛黄) and Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) can be mixed with pig's milk and administered into the throat, which will lead to immediate recovery. If twitching at the eyebrow corners persists, take the membrane of two large shrimp, extract fresh bile, mix with human milk, and administer orally for immediate effect.
Zhu Yin Wan (Cinnabar and Silver Pill): This formula can eliminate toxins retained in the fetus during gestation and also treats startle and food accumulation; it must be administered in appropriate doses.
Ingredients: Hydrargyrum (Shuiyin, 水银) (1 qian, steamed with dates and ground into paste), Rhizoma Arisaematis (Nanxing, 南星), Scorpio (Quanxie, 全蝎), Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (each 1 qian), Radix Baeckae (Baifuzi, 白附子) (1.5 qian), Tianshangzi (Tianshangzi, 天浆子), Aloe (Luhui, 芦荟) (each 5 qian), Plumbum Subacetatum (Qianshuang, 铅霜) (ground with water), Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, 牛黄) (each 0.5 qian), Bombyx Batryticatus (Baijiangcan, 白僵蚕) (7 pieces, stir-fried), Borneolum Syntheticum (Pian Nao, 片脑) (1 zi), Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) (a little).
Make honey pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take before meals with mint decoction.
If ancient formulas are applicable, do not arbitrarily add or subtract ingredients. Once the syndrome is accurately identified, administration yields immediate results. Those who dare not use it are guilty of ignorance; those who use it without understanding the syndrome achieve nothing.
Suo Du (Locked Belly) refers to heat-toxin accumulation from the fetal stage obstructing the anus. Immediately instruct the mother to rinse her mouth with warm water and suck on seven areas of the infant: the anterior chest, posterior back, umbilicus, and palms and soles of both hands and feet, repeating this four or five times. Externally, administer 5 fen of Calomelas (Qingfen, 轻粉) mixed with a little honey and dissolved in warm water internally, stopping when bowel movement is achieved. If obstruction persists, use an object to mechanically clear the passage. A gold hairpin is preferred, followed by a jade hairpin. Insert approximately 2 cun deep, insert Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill), and relief is felt upon defecation. If there is no bowel movement by the seventh day after birth, death ensues; if there is neither bowel movement nor feeding, death also ensues.
Su He Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill)
Ingredients: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Qingmuxiang, 青木香), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Wuxixie, 乌犀屑), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Fructus Terminaliae Chebulae (Helile, 诃梨勒) (roasted and skin removed), Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂), Santali Albi Lignum (Baitanxiang, 白檀香), Styrax (Anshixiang, 安息香) (separately ground into powder, boiled with 1 sheng of pure wine into a paste), Aquilariae Lignum (Chenxiang, 沉香), Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), Syzygii Aromatica Flos (Dingxiang, 丁香), Piperis Longi Fructus (Bibo, 荜茇) (each 2 liang), Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao, 龙脑), Olibanum (Xunluxiang, 薰陆香), Oleum Styracis (Suhexiangyou, 苏合香油) (added to the Anshixiang paste, each 1 liang).
There are three different ancient formulas.
