(Yan's Formula) Treats limb edema, with a sallow complexion and shortness of voice, no thirst in the mouth, and free passage of both stool and urine. (This is due to deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, where Earth fails to control Water, causing Water to act recklessly and result in edema. Because there is no stagnant heat, there is no thirst, and the stool is not constipated; this is classified as Yin Water. Yan said: To treat swelling caused by Yin Water, use this formula first to strengthen the Spleen Earth.)
Bai Zhu (Stir-fried with soil) Fu Ling Gan Cao (Honey-fried) Hou Po (Stir-fried with ginger juice) Da Fu Zi Cao Dou Kou Mu Xiang Mu Gua Fu Zi Hei Jiang
Since the Spleen is deficient, Bai Zhu and Gan Cao are used to tonify it; since the Spleen is cold, Sheng Jiang, Fu Zi, and Cao Dou Kou are used to warm it; since the Spleen is damp, Da Fu Zi and Fu Ling are used to promote urination and leach out dampness; since the Spleen is stagnant, Mu Xiang and Hou Po are used to regulate and transport. The functions of the Spleen cannot be explained by general principles alone.
Treats water overflowing like water at a high altitude, with edema throughout the limbs. (The Classic states: The San Jiao is the official responsible for irrigation, and the water passages emerge from it. If the Upper Jiao is dysfunctional, water stops; if the Middle Jiao is dysfunctional, water stagnates in the Zhong Wan region; if the Lower Jiao is dysfunctional, water accumulates in the Bladder.)
Mai Men Dong (50 seeds, stir-fried with ginger) Jing Mi (50 grains)
Wu Hegao said: The Lung is not without function. When food enters the Stomach, its essence floats and overflows, transporting upwards to the Spleen. The Spleen scatters the essence, sending it upwards to return to the Lung, which regulates the water passages.
(Dan Liao Formula) Treats water disease with swelling and fullness, wheezing and rapid breathing, or edema below the waist.
Wu Jia Pi Di Gu Pi Fu Ling Pi Da Fu Pi Sheng Jiang Pi (In one prescription, Wu Jia Pi is replaced by Chen Pi; in Luo's prescription, Wu Jia Pi is replaced by Sang Bai Pi, to treat post-illness...)
Wu Jia Pi dispels wind and overcomes dampness; Di Gu Pi clears heat and tonifies deficiency; Sheng Jiang is pungent and dispersing, assisting Yang. Water is a Yin pathogen; Da Fu Zi directs Qi downward and moves Water; Fu Ling leaches out dampness and strengthens the Spleen.
Treats constipation due to accumulated heat, difficult urination, or severe pain in the lower part of the waist and abdomen, or damp-heat obstruction. Jaundice, hematuria, and syndromes such as strangury and retention caused by accumulation of evil heat.
