(Hejian imitated Zhongjing's Ten Jujube Decoction to formulate this decoction, treating all types of water-dampness pathologies.) It treats edema and abdominal distension with fluid accumulation, where both the physical constitution and vital qi are excess. (Swelling and distension refer to the obstruction of water pathways. "Excess in both form and qi" manifests as thirst, red face, coarse breathing, hard abdomen, and constipation of both stool and urine. Yang-edema begins swelling on the upper body, involving the shoulders, back, and arms, corresponding to the Hand-Taiyang meridians. Yin-edema begins swelling on the lower body, involving the waist, abdomen, and calves, corresponding to the Foot-Yin meridians. Swelling is associated with the Spleen, distension with the Liver; when swelling occurs, yang qi still circulates. If there is only distension without swelling, it is called Drum Distension. This results from Liver Wood overacting upon Spleen Earth and is difficult to treat. Distension that improves in the morning and worsens at night indicates Blood deficiency; one that improves at night and worsens in the morning indicates Qi deficiency; one that worsens at both times indicates combined Qi and Blood deficiency. If distension spreads from the heart/abdomen to the limbs, it is auspicious; if it moves from the limbs into the heart/abdomen, it is critical. In men, progression from below upward, and in women, from above downward, are both difficult to treat. Distension accompanied by black lips indicates Liver injury; a flat supraclavicular fossa (Quepen) indicates Heart injury; everted umbilicus indicates Spleen injury; flat soles indicate Kidney injury; a flat back indicates Lung injury. All these conditions are incurable. Abdominal distension with fever and a large pulse is a counter-indication, often leading to death.)
Black Qian Niu (炒 four liang) Da Huang (two liang, soaked in wine) Gan Sui (wrapped in flour and baked) Da Ji (wrapped in flour and baked) Yuan Hua (stir-fried with vinegar) Qing Pi (stir-fried)
Qian Niu, Da Huang, Da Ji, Yuan Hua, and Gan Sui are all potent purgatives for water retention, capable of circulating water through the twelve meridians. However, swelling relates to the Spleen, and distension to the Liver... [Text fragment] ...Reduce Yuan Hua, Da Ji, Qing Pi, Chen Pi, and Mu Xiang; add Mang Xiao and Yu Li Ren, named Jun Chuan San. Take five fen with ginger soup; indications are the same.
Treats generalized edema, wheezing and crying out, thirst, and constipation of stool and urine. (The above symptoms arise from severe damp-heat and excess Zheng Qi. This belongs to Yang Edema. The pulse in Yang Edema must be deep and rapid. Yin Edema presents with Yin syndromes, and the pulse must be deep and slow.)
Qiang Huo Qin Jiao Bing Lang Shang Lu Jiao Mu Da Fu Pi Fu Ling Pi Mu Tong Ze Xie Chi Xiao Dou (equal parts). Decoct with Sheng Jiang Pi.
Externally, the whole body is swollen; internally, there is thirst and constipation. This indicates pathology affecting both the exterior and interior, as well as the upper and lower jiaos. Qiang Huo and Qin Jiao release the exterior and disperse wind, allowing dampness to be overcome by wind, and pathogens... [Text cuts off] ...through...
