(Li Dongyuan) Treats afternoon fever, aversion to wind on the back, heaviness and fatigue of the four limbs, yellow urine, and also treats fever persisting after sweating. (Note: Afternoon fever occurs because the heat is in the Yin aspect, with Yang Qi sinking into the Yin. The back belongs to Yang, the abdomen to Yin. Aversion to cold on the back indicates that Yang Qi cannot extend. The Spleen governs the four limbs; heaviness and fatigue of the limbs indicate that Dampness is excessive while the Spleen's transportation function fails. Yellow urine indicates Dampness combined with Heat. Fever persisting after sweating may be due to Yin deficiency or Yang deficiency.)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Hostwood), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 7 qian).
Yang Qi sinks into the Yin, and heat resides in the Blood aspect; therefore, Shengdihuang is used to nourish the Shaoyin (Kidney). Zhimu and Digupi are used to drain latent fire from the blood. Chaihu lifts Yang Qi...
(Waitai Miyao / External Cabinet Secret Formulas) Treats labor fever and bone-steaming sensation, where the body appears fat but muscles are emaciated, sweating is present, and the pulse is long. (Note: This refers to labor fever, where Yang pathogenic factors enter the interior and transform into bone-steaming. It causes chills followed by fever, gradually leading to emaciation. Sweating indicates excess in the Stomach. A long pulse indicates a Yangming syndrome.)
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) is ground into fine powder. Each evening, take one cun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a teaspoon) with newly drawn well water, until the fever subsides.
Shigao is extremely cold and heavy in texture, capable of entering the interior to descend fire. Its pungent taste and light qi allow it to penetrate the exterior and release the muscle layer. Although cold, its sweet nature can moderate the Spleen. For cases of fire-related exhaustion with excess heat, non-...
(Also known as Liu Yi Gan Lu San / Six-One Sweet Dew Powder) Treats Yangming internal heat, irritability and thirst, headache, constipation of both stool and urine, plague, yellow macules/rash, and syndromes such as hot-phlegm wheezing and coughing.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 6 liang, raw), Fen Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang), ground into fine powder. Take 1-3 qian per dose. Mix with newly drawn well water, hot water, or Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) to swallow.
Treats bone-steaming labor fever (Fire flares upward, Water is deficient, True Yin is consumed and scorched, hence a steaming heat sensation between the skin and bones. Li Dongyuan stated: Fever during the day and quiet at night indicates Yang Qi is prosperous in the Yang aspect. Quiet during the day and fever at night indicates Yang Qi has sunk into the Yin, named "Heat Entering the Blood Chamber." Fever throughout day and night indicates absence of Yin. One should urgently drain the Yang and vigorously tonify the Yin. Daytime illness relates to the Qi aspect; nighttime illness relates to the Blood aspect.)
Yin Chaihu (Stellariae Radix), Hu Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, prepared with child's urine), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Zhi Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 0.5 qian).
The bitter-cold nature of Digupi, Huhuanglian, and Zhimu can clear heat from the Yin aspect and pacify it internally. The acrid-cold nature of Chaihu, Qin Jiao, and Qinghao can clear heat from the Liver and Gallbladder...
