This syndrome arises from worry, excessive thought, and anger, consumption of raw and cold food, sexual intercourse after drunkenness or full meals, which damages the Spleen Qi and injures the Liver Qi, causing pain in both hypochondriac regions. Quack doctors further use cold-natured medicines, severely injuring the Spleen, leading to severe illness, resulting in death due to Zhongman (abdominal fullness) or Fanwei (vomiting undigested food). Alternatively, anger injures the Liver, and doctors add heavy Qi-breaking herbs such as Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) to further weaken the Liver, causing emaciation of the four limbs and death due to inability to eat. The correct treatment method is: if the condition is severe, with weak pulses in all six positions, emaciation, and poor appetite, this indicates that Spleen Qi is about to collapse. Urgently moxa the Zuomiguan (Left Mingguan) acupoint 200 moxa cones to secure the Spleen Qi, then the patient will not die. Afterwards, administer Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), Quan Zhen Dan (Complete True Pill), Lai Fu Dan (Returning Reversal Pill), and Bichengqie San (Long Pepper Powder) according to the specific symptoms, and the disease will heal itself. (The ancient method for this syndrome states: If occurring on the left, it is a disorder of Liver Wood, with unresolved blood stasis caused by anger; if on the right, it is due to phlegm-fluid retention, food stagnation, and Qi stagnation, which are branch syndromes easy to treat. If Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi) is disordered, causing pain at Xuli (the area over the heart apex), and Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) is unbalanced, causing pain in the Spleen collaterals, this cannot be cured without gradual warming and nourishment. As for Liangxi Lianxin Tong (pain in both hypochondria radiating to the heart like knife stabbing), this is a fatal injury to the Three Yin meridians, with rebellious Qi between the diaphragm and huang, requiring heavy warm-tonifying measures. Additionally, Feiqi (Fat Accumulation) and Xiben (Breath Retention) are accumulations located at the mu-yuan (alarm points) of the zang organs. If one sticks to ancient formulas and specializes in attacking and weakening methods, there will be no survivors.)
This disease is caused by deficiency of Heart and Lung Qi, excessive consumption of raw and cold foods freezing the Lung Qi, or excessive sexual activity severely injuring the Kidney. This results in body fluids failing to ascend and moisten the mouth, forming Xiaoke (Wasting-Thirst). The Kidney meridian passes through the throat and connects to the root of the tongue. If Kidney Water is dried up and cannot ascend to moisten the mouth, it causes polydipsia but paradoxically oliguria. Medical texts often treat this as Heat, damaging the Kidney Yuan Qi, misleading many people. The correct method is: Moxa Qihai (Sea of Qi) 300 cones in Spring, and Guanyuan (Gate of Origin) 200 cones in Autumn. Take Yanshou Dan (Longevity Pill) ten pills daily. After two months, Kidney Qi regenerates. If taking Fire-Descending medicines, there is temporary efficacy, but long-term use gradually damages Lung Qi and depletes Kidney Qi, eventually turning into Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) leading to death. This syndrome strictly forbids alcohol, sexual indulgence, and raw, hard foods. If Spleen Qi is excessive while Kidney Qi is insufficient, it forms Xiaozhong (Middle Wasting-Thirst). Excess Heat in the Spleen causes polyphagia and wasting; insufficient Kidney Qi causes weakness in the lower body or turbid urine resembling Ganji (childhood malnutrition). Sun Simiao attributed this to accumulated Heat in the Triple Burner and used cooling medicines, harming many people. Although the Spleen has Heat, using cold medicines to purge it destroys the Spleen before the Heat is eliminated. The correct method is first to moxa Guanyuan 200 cones, then take one jin (approx. 500g) of Jin Ye Dan to achieve cure. (Although Xiaoke is divided into Upper, Middle, and Lower types, it is fundamentally caused by the depletion of body fluids. The Kidney is the source of body fluids, and the Spleen is the root. Deficiency of the root and source leads to Xiaoke. Upper Xiaoke is called Gexiao in *Suwen*, characterized by thirst and polydipsia with frequent urination. Middle Xiaoke is called Xiaozhong in *Suwen*, characterized by rapid digestion with hunger and body emaciation. Lower Xiaoke is called Feixiao in *Suwen*, characterized by thirst, frequent urination with fatty substances in urine, drinking one part and urinating two parts; later generations also call it Shenxiao (Kidney Wasting-Thirst), which is a severe stage. If the pulse is faint and choppy or fine and small, the body is emaciated and exhausted, and the urine tastes sweet, these are incurable syndromes. The general principle is to rescue body fluids and strengthen Fire and Water to sustain life.)
Case Record:
A person drank water frequently but thirst did not cease. I said, "Your disease is Xiaoke, caused by deficiency of Spleen and Lung Qi, not internal Heat." The patient said, "I previously took six doses of cooling medicines. Although the heat subsided, the thirst persists, and I feel Qi blockage in the chest and hypochondrium with wheezing." I said, "The previous syndrome only injured the Spleen and Lung. The cooling medicines further damaged the Yuan Qi, so transportation failed, causing water retention below the Heart." Urgently moxa Guanyuan and Qihai, 300 cones each. Take Sishen Dan (Four Spirit Pill). After sixty days, body fluids regenerated. Medical texts attribute this syndrome to fierce Heat in the Triple Burner and use cooling purgatives, killing people more than swords and knives. Be cautious. (When body fluids are injured, it causes not only Xiaoke but also various mixed diseases. Many are harmed by the mistaken use of cold-natured medicines. Contemporary physicians kill with this, yet people do not realize why.)
