Whenever cold substances injure the Spleen in summer and are combined with the invasion of Summerheat, Dryness Disease (Zao Bing) forms. This causes persistent fever and thirst, with the six pulses appearing wiry and large. This is due to Fire-Heat injuring the Lungs, preventing Body Fluids (Jin Ye) from ascending and distributing. The pathology involves both the Stomach and Spleen. If dryness-heat occurs but the patient can eat, the heat is in the Stomach; this is easy to treat and will be cured by taking Quanzhen Dan (All-True Pill) and Bichengqie San (Bi Cheng Qie Powder). If dryness-heat occurs and the patient cannot eat, accompanied by fatigue and weakness in the four limbs, the heat is in the Spleen; this is severe and will be cured in five days by taking Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), Caoshen Dan (Divine Grass Pill), or Laifu Dan (Returning to Origin Pill). If treated as a Summerheat condition using cooling purgatives, although the heat may temporarily subside, it will inevitably transform into symptoms such as abdominal fullness and profuse diarrhea.
In summer, fever must be differentiated as deficiency or excess. If the six pulses are deep and rapid, and appetite remains normal, it is Excess Heat, cured by Bohe Jian (Peppermint Decoction). If the six pulses are wiry and tight, with reduced appetite and fatigue, it is Deficiency Heat; cold and cooling agents are strictly contraindicated, and one should use Quanzhen Dan or Laifu Dan for recovery. (When there is fever and thirst in summer with wiry and large pulses, who would refuse to treat it as Summerheat and avoid cold/cooling agents? They do not realize that Summerheat steaming consumes Yuan Qi (Primal Qi). Once Yuan Qi is damaged, thirst is inevitable. Cold substances injure the Spleen, disrupting normal transport and irrigation; when the Triple Burner loses its transformative function and the interstices (Cou Li) are disharmonious, fever and thirst are unavoidable. Moreover, wiry pulses indicate reduction (deficiency of Yang), and large pulses indicate emptiness (deficiency). Careful examination confirms this, and warmth therapy can resolve it. Current physicians exclusively favor formulas containing Moslae Herba (Xiangru), Artemisiae Annuae Herba (Qinghao), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), and Talcum (Huashi), which often lead to diarrhea, yet they still attribute it to "Heat-collateral" (Xie Re). By the time collapse occurs, they remain unaware. This error stems from a lack of understanding of pulse diagnosis, mistaking treatment for harm.)
In summer, Yin Qi resides in the abdomen. Summerheat damages Yuan Qi, and ice water/cold foods further injure the Spleen and Stomach; all these constitute Deficiency syndromes. The *Ju Fang* (Formulary of the Bureau) uses Xiangru Yin (Mosla Decoction), Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), Yiyuan San (Benefit Primordial Powder), and Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction), which severely damage Yuan Qi. Mild cases transform into Malaria, Dysentery, Cholera, or Diarrhea; severe cases become Consumption (Xu Lao), Abdominal Fullness, or Incessant Diarrhea. I frequently treat Summerheat conditions with Baoyuan Dan, Laifu Dan, Quanzhen Dan, Jin Ye Dan, Yanshou Dan, and Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction), achieving hundred percent success. Those who wish to save lives should try them.
