Dysentery is caused by consuming cold and raw food during the hot summer months, as well as excessive damp-heat damaging the Spleen and Stomach. If the Qi is damaged, it results in white dysentery; one may take Rusheng Bing (Like-Sage Cake), Quanzhen Dan (Complete Truth Pill), or Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill). If the Blood is damaged, it results in red dysentery; one may take Ejiao Wan (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Pill) or Huangqin Shaoyao Tang (Scutellaria and White Peony Decoction). If abdominal pain occurs at the onset, one should also take Rusheng Bing to expel accumulated blood and achieve recovery; this represents a mild case. However, if one passes stool mixed with five colors resembling fish brains, with a prolonged course and inability to eat, this is Xiuxi Li (Resting Dysentery/Chronic Recurrent Dysentery), which is the most severe type. If not treated early, it will endanger life within ten days to half a month.
Treatment Method: First, moxa the Mingguan acupoint (Zhangmen, LR13) for 200 moxa cones, and administer Caoshen Dan (Grass Spirit Pill) and Pili Tang (Thunderbolt Decoction); recovery will occur within three days. Overuse of cold-natured purgatives will certainly lead to death. (For resting dysentery that recurs endlessly without cessation, if it does not improve due to improper prescription, it is due to incorrect conditioning or dietary errors, causing frequent relapses and prolonged duration. However, achieving complete cessation is quite challenging. Causes include: deficiency and sinking of Lung Qi, insufficiency of Kidney Yin, dual deficiency of Spleen and Kidney, sinking of meridians, Liver Wood overacting on the Spleen, retention of foul turbidity, premature use of astringents, dysfunction of the Triple Burner, damp-heat injuring the Spleen, insufficiency of generating Yang, solitary Yin descending, uneliminated summer-toxicity, Yin accumulation in the intestines, and invasion of Wind pathogen. Each must be carefully examined to ascertain the condition, treat accurately, and ensure effective results.)
Clinical Cases:
One patient suffered from resting dysentery for half a year, with Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) nearly depleted and the six pulses nearly absent, presenting a critical condition. I applied moxibustion to Mingguan for 300 cones and Guanyuan for 300 cones. The six pulses stabilized, and the dysentery stopped. However, sharp stabbing pain occurred in both hypochondria. Subsequently, taking Caoshen Dan and Pili Tang led to full recovery. After one month, bowel movements occurred once every two days.
Another patient suffered from resting dysentery. I instructed him to moxa Mingguan for 200 cones, after which the illness resolved. Two days later, the condition transformed into diarrhea, occurring five to seven times in one shichen (two-hour period). He was prescribed two doses of Pili Tang, which stopped the diarrhea immediately. Later, edema appeared in the four limbs, indicating Spleen deficiency progressing toward Shuizhang (Water Swelling/Edema). I then moxaed Guanyuan for 200 cones and administered Jin Ye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill) totaling ten taels. Recovery was achieved within one month.
