(Attachment of Bone to the Throat)
[General Discussion] Unilateral tonsillar hypertrophy (Dan Ru E) refers to swelling on one side of the pharynx. Bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy (Shuang Ru E) refers to swelling on both sides of the pharynx. The shape is round and protruding like a pearl. It belongs to the category of carbuncles and furuncles, forming in the laryngopharynx. It should be pricked to drain the pathogenic toxins, or it will heal after bleeding. "Channing Hou Feng" (Wrapping Throat Wind) presents as diffuse redness and swelling over a large area, rarely suppurating or bleeding; if the fire pathogen is cleared, the swelling subsides spontaneously. "Suohou Feng" (Locking Throat Wind) is characterized by sore throat and swelling, difficulty swallowing food, or obstruction due to phlegm-qi stagnation; phlegm-saliva must be expectorated. "Houxuan" (Throat Herpes/Lichen) often occurs in individuals with yin deficiency and consumptive diseases. Its manifestation is sores covering the entire throat, with redness and pain, persisting for a long time without healing; this is caused by kidney water deficiency and flaming up of deficient fire.
[General Treatment for Wind-Heat Obstructing the Throat Causing Soreness and Swelling] Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 2 qian), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike, 1.5 qian). These three herbs form the main prescription. Add Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Niubangzi (Arctium Seed), Bohe (Mint Leaf), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), each 1 qian; Xiaoshengdi (Rehmannia Root, 2-3 qian); Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus, 20 stems). Decoct in water and take orally. (Applicable at the initial stage.)
[Blowing Powder for All Types of Swelling, Pain, and Throat Closure] Bohe (Mint Leaf, 1 liang, separately ground into an extremely fine powder), Pengsha (Borax, 2.5 qian), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, 5 fen of straight specimens, roasted on a tile until scorched then ground), Ercha (Kathir, 1 qian), Yaxiao (Niter, 7.5 qian), Xionghuang (Realgar, 2 qian), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum, 3 fen). All are ground finely and mixed uniformly. Store in a porcelain jar to prevent leakage of air. Use a reed tube to pick up a small amount of powder and blow it into the affected area. Alternatively, use a tea spoon to place it on the tongue, hold it for a while, and then swallow. Apply 8-9 times daily until healed. Alternatively, hold Shandougeng (Diphylleia Sinensis Root) in the mouth to extract juice and swallow it; this is effective immediately.
[Throat Closure] When food and drink cannot pass through, leading to critical danger, use Zijin Ding (Purple Gold Pill, i.e., Taiyi Dan, preferably authentic ingredients). Grind 5 fen with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction) and slowly administer. The throat will open immediately. For severe cases, two doses are sufficient; this has proven highly effective repeatedly. Take Ba Dou (Croton Seed) oil, coat a piece of bamboo paper thoroughly, roll it into a strip, light it like a lamp, and extinguish it. Have the patient open their mouth and expose the throat to the smoke from the burning paper. Expectoration of purple blood will clear the obstruction. For initial throat closure with swelling and pain, decoct Luoshi (Trachelospermum Caulis) alone in water and take it; it is effective immediately. Alternatively, use Ya Zaojia (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, skin and tendons removed), Baifan (Alumen), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) in equal parts. Roast on a new tile until dry, grind into an extremely fine powder (remove fire toxicity), and blow a small amount into the throat with a reed tube; this cures it. In extreme emergencies where no medicine is available, tightly compress the patient's arms with hands dozens of times. Tie the thumb with a hair tie similar to the method for releasing sha (bloodletting). Prick the finger tip about 1 fen away from the nail bed with a needle; dripping purple blood resolves the condition. (Treat unilateral/bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy similarly.)
[Throat Closure Accompanied by Trismus] Wrap 7 Ba Dou seeds in paper to extract the oil. Roll the oiled paper into a strip, burn it to produce smoke, and inhale the smoke into the nose; the jaw will open immediately. Then, use chopsticks to apply powder of Xionghuang (Realgar) and Danfan (Chalcanthite) into the throat; expectoration of saliva and phlegm leads to immediate recovery. Baifan (Alumen, 3 qian) is melted over slow heat, mixed with 2 peeled Ba Dou seeds ground into paste, dried, and the Ba Dou removed. The alum is ground into a fine powder. Blow a small amount into the throat; expectoration of stubborn phlegm leads to immediate recovery. A piece of genuine aged Danning (Arisaema Cum Bile, approx. 1 grain) held in the mouth opens the throat immediately. For all throat closures, regardless of severity, Zijin Ding is most effective. It is advisable to consume equal parts of Xue Li Zhi (Snow Pear Juice) and spring water, or decoct Lv Dou (Mung Bean) for dozens of boils (remove before flowers bloom, utilizing the cooling nature of the bean skin). Add a little honey and consume frequently. If these are unavailable, mix Radish Juice with spring water, add a small amount of Xuán Míng Fěn (Mirabilite), stir well, and drink slowly. This resolves phlegm and clears fire; both are excellent methods. The eighteen throat syndromes are all caused by internal accumulation of fire-heat and should be treated with cooling medicines. The exception is Ge Yang Yan Bi (Isolated Yang Throat Obstruction), caused by deficiency of fire below, floating yang above, and struggle between cold and heat resulting in throat bi. The pulse is fine, rapid, and faint; the voice seems unable to resonate. Only in this case, use one Da Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, peeled and cut into thick slices, coated with honey, roasted until yellow, cooled, and held in the mouth to swallow saliva; replace when taste fades. Do not use if pulse and symptoms do not match).
[Unilateral and Bilateral Tonsillar Hypertrophy] Mix half a cup of Ji Dan Qing (Egg White) with 3 qian of Ming Fan (Refined Alum) powder. Stir uniformly. Lie supine, scoop into the mouth with a tea spoon, and contact the throat for immediate relief. Drop juice from Lan Gen (Orchid Root) for effectiveness. In winter, take Qing Yu Dan (Green Fish Gallbladder), mix with 2 qian of ground Danfan (Chalcanthite) (dry in shade, grind, store in porcelain). For this syndrome, blow a small amount into the throat; expectoration of phlegm leads to immediate recovery. For critical cases, take 7 pieces of spider webs from walls (containing 2 live spiders grouped together). Dissolve a piece of Baifan (Alumen, 7 fen), soak the web in the alum solution, calcine to retain properties, remove fire toxicity, and mix with Dengcao Hui (Juncus Ash). Blow a small amount into the throat to rupture the abscess. Grind 1-2 Ren Zhijia (Human Nail) until yellow on a tile, powder it, and blow into the throat for immediate effect. For critical bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy, use 21 Sparrow Droppings, mix with rock sugar to form 3 pills. Swallow one pill wrapped in cotton; it heals immediately. Severe cases may require two pills; this has miraculous effects. If no medicine is available or cannot be taken, use one dry Pig Bladder. Moisten it, fit it over a finger, dip in raw Tung Oil, insert into the throat to induce vomiting; vomiting resolves the blockage. Alternatively, mix half a bowl of warm water with 3-4 spoons of Tung Oil. Dip a hard goose feather into the oil and probe the throat. Probe 4-5 times, inducing expectoration of phlegm. Repeat until the patient regains consciousness and voice strength. Subsequently, administer Qingyan Lige Tang (Clear Throat and Benefit Diaphragm Decoction). After acute symptoms resolve, consume half a bowl of thin porridge to suppress pathogenic heat and prevent recurrence. Avoid hot and hard foods.
[Drooping Epiglottis/Uvula] (Refers to drooping uvula). Use Shi Yan (Rock Salt) roasted with snow water until charred to remove fire toxicity. Frequent application to the affected area reduces swelling. Alternatively, add a small amount of Ku Fan (Calcined Alum). For Xuan Yong (Hanging Abscess) with swelling and pain, use Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome) and Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (each 5 qian), Chuan Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), Mu Bei Ren (Momordica Seed), each 2.5 qian; Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, peeled, de-husked, fried until slightly yellow, 5 qian). Grind all into powder, make honey pills the size of small marbles. Hold one pill in the mouth to dissolve slowly.
[Throat Lichen/Burns] Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) and Xi Huang (Musk, each 1 fen), Danfan (Chalcanthite, 3 fen), Da Pengsha (Large Borax, 8 fen), Shandougeng (Diphylleia Sinensis Root, 2 qian), Xionghuang (Realgar) and Ercha (Kathir, each 8 fen), Chen Bai Mei (Aged White Plum, pitted, 3 pieces). Grind all into powder. Mash the white plums, mix with the powder, and form pills the size of a Chinese chestnut. Hold in the mouth before sleep; it dissolves overnight. Rinse mouth frequently with juice from Lan Hua Gen (Orchid Root). Excrement from a first-born yellow cow: cover excrement with a clean new tile, roast over mild heat until smoke ceases and only carbon remains. Grind into powder. Inhale slowly through a reed tube; it heals spontaneously. Pickled mustard brine buried in the ground for many years: take several spoons per dose, and rinse mouth frequently. (Many wealthy families in Jiaxing city keep this.)
[Plum Pit Qi] Sensation of obstruction in the throat, as if something is stuck, cannot be spat out or swallowed down. Use Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Hai Ge Fen (Clam Shell Powder), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) in equal parts. Grind into powder, mix with refined honey and a little ginger juice to form pills the size of a Chinese chestnut. Hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly.
[Deficient Fire Flaming Up Damaging Lung, Sores and Ulcers in Throat] Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) ground into powder, made into honey pills, roasted multiple times until cooked, then ground finely (1 liang). Pengsha (Borax) and Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (each 1.5 qian), Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, 3 fen), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum, 0.5 fen). Grind all finely and mix. Mix with honey to a thin paste. Apply to the affected area. Or form pills the size of a Chinese chestnut and hold in the mouth to dissolve; this is effective.
[Throat Ulcer Zhibao Dan] Renzhongbai (Human Urine Sediment, homemade is best: take old urinals or jars exposed to wind and sun, break them, remove surface scum, scrape off white hard alkali, roast on a new tile until red, grind finely, wash in water to remove floating impurities). Use 5-7 fen per dose. Mix with white honey and flow into the throat. Apply 2-3 times daily. For severe cases, use 1-2 qian. Immediate miraculous effect. Also treats chronic gum ulcers in adults and children that do not heal. For chronic ulcers preventing eating and unresponsive to other medicines: before Start of Summer, collect immature frogs from ponds (black with tails). Dry and grind into powder. Apply to the ulcer for immediate effect. Alternatively, put fresh frogs in a porcelain jar, cover with a bowl, seal with melted beeswax, and bury in the ground for 3-4 months until they liquefy. Use a chicken feather to moisten the affected area frequently for treating throat issues; this is miraculous. Also treats all carbuncles, sores, and toxic swellings; apply around the perimeter to reduce swelling. If throat ulcers persist after Yangmei Chuang (Syphilis/Chancre) toxin, treat the severe toxin with Tu Fuling Tang (Smilax Glabra Decoction) to cure.
[Wrapping Throat Wind with Hoarseness] Dianhua (Indigo Flower) and Bohe Ye (Mint Leaf) in equal parts. Grind into powder, make honey pills the size of marbles. Take one pill per dose, hold in mouth before sleep to dissolve.
[Sudden Loss of Voice] Gong Zhu Ban You (Male Pig Back Fat, 1 jin), clarified and filtered. Bai Mi (White Honey, 1 jin), clarified and skimmed. Mix both, boil briefly, pour into a porcelain jar, and cool to form a paste. Take occasionally. Moistening the lung restores voice. For hoarseness due to heat, drink Tian Luo Shui (Luffa Water) on an empty stomach with warm water. (Formula see Phlegm-Cough section.)
[Fish Bone Impaction] Cut Bai Yi Tang (White Maltose) into dates-sized pieces and swallow; it works immediately. Cook Le Cai (Chinese Chives) until half-cooked, do not cut, swallow a bundle whole; it wraps the bone and pushes it down. For sharp pain in the throat, use Weilingshen (Clematis Root) 5 qian, Yi Tang (Maltose) 5 qian, decoct in wine and water (1 bowl each) to soften the bone. Chew Lu Jiao Xie (Deer Antler Scraps) and swallow with saliva. Eat more Gan Lan (Olive) to dissolve the bone. If other medicines fail, use Guan Zhong (Cyrtomium Rhizome) (any amount), decoct strong juice (1 cup), take twice until cured. The above formulas treat all bone impactions. If not expelled in 7 days, burn Carp Scales, mix with water, and take. If the bone has entered the stomach causing sharp pain, decoct Zhu Yu Zhi (Evodia Juice) and drink one cup. For fish bones or accidental ingestion of bamboo/wood splinters: immediately take one fish bone or bamboo splinter, insert it into the hair braid smoothly, without letting others know, and swallow; it will go down. Alternatively, have someone else insert it secretly; this has remarkable effects. Another method: make a thin paste with Bai Mian (Wheat Flour), apply to both knee joints; the object will naturally pass. This is quite effective.
[Bamboo/Wood Splinter Impaction] Stretch Si Mian (Silk Floss) long. Coat one end with white sugar. Swallow slowly. When it reaches 1-2 cun down the throat and the sugar melts, gradually pull the silk floss out, bringing the impacted object with it. Grind an iron axe with water and pour it down; the object passes immediately.
[Pig Bone Impaction] Hold a piece of Pengsha (Borax) in the mouth to dissolve; it self-dissolves. Guan Zhong Zhi (Cyrtomium Juice) is also effective.
[Various Animal Bones] Cuo Xi Hu Gu (Tiger Bone finely ground), mix with water, swallow slowly to dissolve.
[Chicken Bone]捣烂 Ye Zhu Gen (Wild Boehmeria Root) into paste. Take a walnut-sized amount, dissolve in chicken soup and swallow. (Or drink the juice directly; also effective.) Dissolve in fish soup for fish bones. Guan Zhong Zhi (Cyrtomium Juice) is also effective.
[Rice Awns/Grain Impaction] Eat more Yi Tang (Maltose) to pass it. Alternatively, hang a goose upside down, collect the saliva, and swallow it.
[Accidental Ingestion of Coins] If initially stuck in chest/stomach causing pain and inability to swallow: first decoct Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit, crushed) strongly, drink slowly. Then take Yang Jing Gu Hui (Sheep Tibia Ash, finely ground), 3 qian per dose, mixed with pig fat oil. Continue until the object is expelled in stool. Red-hot Shan Mu Tan (Fir Charcoal), ground finely while still red, mixed with rock sugar, 3 qian per dose, 2-3 times daily. If intestinal movement fails causing pain, eat more green vegetables with pig fat oil to facilitate passage.
[Children Accidentally Swallowing Needles] First, use 1 pair of Hamayan (Toad Eye) or Ji Yan (Chicken Eye). Swallow with Mutong Tang (Akebia Decoction). The needle pierces the eyes, allowing it to be vomited out immediately. Or it passes through stool. Miraculous effect. If urgent in winter and unavailable, dig 2-3 chi deep under a large mulberry tree to find them. Sprouted soybeans, half raw half cooked, mashed, formed into pills with Le Cai Zhi (Chive Juice), and swallowed. Pills made of rock sugar and yellow mud, swallowed by children, all pass through stool.
[Children Accidentally Swallowing Nails] Huo Ci Shi (Native Magnetite, 1 qian) and Pu Xiao (Mirabilite, 2 qian), ground finely together. Mix with boiled pig fat and white honey into a thin paste. Swallow immediately. Expelled in stool the next morning. This method works for all iron objects.
[Hair Wrapped Around Throat Preventing Passage] Burn own loose hair to ash. Mix with plain water, take 1 qian.
