[General Discussion] Whenever people sit or lie facing the wind, or when their daily activities involve improper clothing or bedding, pathogenic Wind Qi enters through the pores and nasal cavity. The infection is superficial, located between the meridians and Couli (interstitial spaces). Consequently, symptoms such as aversion to cold with high fever, headache with facial redness, cold limbs, absence of sweating with aversion to cold, cough with thick sputum, nasal congestion with heavy voice, a floating and moderate pulse on the left side, and preserved taste sensation occur. It is appropriate to use herbs like Zisu (Perilla Leaf) and Guangpi (Tangerine Peel), which regulate Qi and have light and floating properties, to disperse the pathogen. If too much Ginger Decoction is consumed and one is covered with heavy blankets to induce sweating, the Wind pathogen may penetrate inward, potentially resulting in Heat Cough. One should avoid raw and cold foods to prevent the Wind pathogen from transforming into Cold affecting the Middle Jiao. Exercise caution.
[Nasal Congestion, Cough, Pulling Pain in Chest and Hypochondrium, Fever, Thirst] Suye (Perilla Leaf), Guangpi (Tangerine Peel), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (each 1 qian). Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed), Jiang Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum cum Zingibere), Zhi Sangpi (Mori Cortex Preparatus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (each 1.5 qian). Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and three stems of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). Decoct in water and take orally. If there is attacking pain in the head similar to the above, with nasal congestion and heavy voice, use Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) (each 1.5 qian); Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian). Add three stems of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). Decoct in water and take orally.
[Wind-Cold Common Cold in All Seasons] At the onset, crush fresh Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (five stems with roots) and mix with boiling wine for oral administration. If there is body pain, headache, stiffness in the waist and spine, persistent fever, and loss of appetite, use Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (0.8 fen); Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 qian); Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (0.8 fen). Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and one Jujube (Ziziphus Jujuba Fruit). Decoct in water and take orally. If nausea occurs, remove Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix). If sweating is present, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and remove Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma). If thirst is present, add Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Wei Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum Preparatum). If pain occurs at the temporal angles accompanied by alternating chills and fever and hypochondriac pain, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix). If nasal congestion is present, add Suye (Perilla Leaf) and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). For pain throughout the body extending to the neck and spine, use Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), which can disperse Cold pathogens in the muscle layer and relieve pain. Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) is acrid and warm; it can disperse Wind-Cold and treat headaches. Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) is warm and dispersing; it induces sweating, relaxes the middle Jiao, and stops vomiting. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) is bitter and cold; it is used to resolve phlegm, promote Qi circulation, and clear Fire in the Upper Jiao. (To direct the action upward, stir-fry with wine; to direct it downward, use raw.) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) dispels Wind pathogens and treats whole-body pain. Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) is warm and dispersing; it excels at expelling Cold pathogens from the Yin aspect and clearing headaches along the Yin meridians. Adjust the dosage according to the severity of the illness; efficacy is immediate.
[Body Heat with Sweating, Floating Pulse, Cough with Profuse Sputum] Guangpi (Tangerine Peel), Jiang Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum cum Zingibere), Suye (Perilla Leaf), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) (remove skin and tips), Zhi Sangpi (Mori Cortex Preparatus), Xiangbei (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus) (remove heart), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried, each 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian). Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct in water and take orally.
[Wind-Heat Pruritus and Urticaria] Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) (each 1.5 qian); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (each 1 qian); Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis). Decoct in water and take orally.
