[Treatment for Sudden Deafness] Remove the toxic tail of Scorpion (Quanxie, 全蝎), grind into powder. Mix with wine and drip into the ear; effective immediately. Crush Mustard Seed (Jiecaizi, 芥菜子), mix with human milk to form pills, wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear; change frequently until patency is achieved. Slice Drynaria Rhizome (Gusuibu, 骨碎补) into strips, fire-process, and insert while hot into the ear; also effective. For chronic deafness unresponsive to previous treatments, take one clove of Garlic (Dasuan, 大蒜), hollow out a hole in the center, place one seed of Croton Tiglium (Badou, 巴豆) (peeled and membrane removed), fire-process until thoroughly cooked, insert into the garlic hole, wrap securely in new cotton, and insert into the ear; effective after three applications. Tribulus Fructus (Bajili, 白蒺藜) (half raw).
[Deafness due to Qi Obstruction] Insert a one-cun piece of Kansui Radix (Gansui, 甘遂) into the ear, and hold a one-cun piece of Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) in the mouth; patency will be restored.
[Deafness caused by Nasal Congestion] Slice three dried persimmons finely, add three he of japonica rice, cook into porridge, and consume on an empty stomach.
[Deficiency-type Deafness] Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (2 liang), Yam Rhizome (Shanyao, 山药) (stir-fried, 3 liang), Apricot Seed (Xingren, 杏仁) (stir-fried, 1 liang, peel and tip removed), all ground into fine powder. Melt 10 liang of Beeswax (Huangla, 黄蜡) and form pills the size of bullet seeds. Chew and swallow with salt water. (Alternatively, chew only Beeswax finely and swallow with good tea; also effective.)
[Post-illness Deafness] Grind Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) to extract juice and drip into the ear, or rub the leaves soft and insert them.
[Empty Tinnitus in Ear] Scorpion (Quanxie, 全蝎) (14 pieces), Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) (a small amount), Mint Leaf (Bohe, 薄荷) (14 leaves, wrap musk and scorpions on tile and bake dry), grind into extremely fine powder. Add drops of water to mold into pellets, insert into the ear; extremely effective.
[Constant Tinnitus in Ear] Roast Raw Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang, 生地黄) until cooked, cut into sections, and insert into the ear; change frequently daily until effective.
[Earache] Stir-fry Apricot Seeds (Xingren, 杏仁) until black and grind. Mix with white part of Scallion (Congbai, 葱白), knead into a date-pit size ball, and insert into the ear; change frequently until effective. For unbearable ear pain, drip knife-grinding iron slurry into the ear; highly verified. Fresh Mint Leaves (Bohe Ye, 鲜薄荷叶) crushed with Snail (Woniú, 蜗牛) to extract juice, drip into the ear; effective immediately. For initial pain, squeeze juice from Walnut (Hetao, 胡桃) and drip into the ear; pain stops immediately. Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸), Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄), and Aconite Lateral Root Tip (Wutou Jian, 乌头尖) ground together into powder, applied to the sole of the foot to guide heat downward; pain stops. For sudden severe ear pain, sensation of insects running inside, discharge of blood/fluid, or unbearable dry pain, use Snake Slough (Shetui, 蛇蜕) (burned to retain charred nature, ground fine), blow into the ear using a goose feather tube; heals immediately. For swollen and painful ear, grind Strychnos Nux-vomica (Fanmubie, 番木鳖) with water and drip into the ear; heals immediately. For swelling and pain extending to the external root, apply mud mixed with Earthworm (Qiuyin, 蚯蚓).
[Swelling and Pain at Ear Root] For unbearable pain involving the cheek, teeth, and Taiyang region, use Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄) (1 liang), Costus Root (Qingmuxiang, 青木香) (3 qian), Turmeric Rhizome (Jianghuang, 姜黄) (3 qian), Areca Seed (Binglang, 槟榔) (3 qian), grind into powder, mix evenly with vinegar and honey, apply to the affected area leaving a central hole for ventilation. Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou, 赤小豆) and Strychnos Nux-vomica (Mubiezi, 木鳖子) ground into powder, mixed with Egg White (Jidanqing, 鸡蛋清) and applied; pain stops immediately.

Chicken Inner Shell Membrane (Fenghuangyi, 凤凰衣) (fried yellow, ground), mixed with Sesame Oil (Xiangyou, 香油) and instilled; pain stops immediately. For chronic non-healing cases, collect smoke deposits from copper incense burner lids, mix with Calomel (Qingfen, 轻粉), grind evenly, and blow into the ear. Or use Human Tooth (Renya, 人牙) (retained charred nature), add a little Musk (Shexiang, 麝香), and blow into the ear. [Ear Ulceration] Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu, 贝母) (roasted and ground fine), sprinkle dry powder into the ear; effective immediately. For chronic ulceration with deafness, take one large rat, kill instantly in hot water, dissect to extract bile, and drip into the ear; effective if done promptly, otherwise bile dissolves.
[Ear Frostbite] Decoct Eggplant Stems (Qadi, 茄蒂) and wash frequently while hot, or decoct Pepper (Hujiao, 胡椒); also effective. In spring and summer, boil Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Ziran Zhi, 生姜自然汁) into a paste, massage to disperse blood stasis; prevents recurrence in winter.
