[General Discussion] Although eye diseases are said to have seventy-two types, the general patterns are as follows: redness indicates Heat (Re), whiteness indicates Cold (Han), itching indicates Wind (Feng), and dryness/roughness is caused by toxic pathogens (Du Wa). For conditions caused by Wind, dispersing methods should be used; for Heat, cooling methods; for Cold, warming and tonifying methods; for Qi stagnation, regulating and smoothing methods. One must absolutely avoid using knives, needles, cutting, or puncturing. Even if slight improvement occurs occasionally, it is merely luck. If mishandled, it may lead to lifelong affliction. Furthermore, excessive use of cold-natured medicines should be avoided, lest they freeze the blood and cause stasis, leading to chronic stubborn diseases. Treatment should be based on the patient's age and constitution (deficiency or excess). Patients with Kidney deficiency may also present with dull eyesight or the formation of corneal opacities (Yi); warming the lower Yuan and nourishing Kidney Water will lead to self-recovery. Children suffering from eye diseases usually present with Excess rather than Deficiency, and Heat rather than Cold. Blowing medicines (Chui Yao) into the eyes should be avoided, as the child's Qi and Blood are not yet stable, and this might damage the eyes. It is appropriate to treat with detoxifying and anti-toxic medicines. (Those with eye diseases must strictly avoid bathing, as it can lead to blindness; engaging in sexual intercourse will inevitably cause internal cataracts.)
[Universal Formula for Eye Diseases] Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Bencao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (stir-fried with wine), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha), each at 1 qian; Quanxie (Scorpio) at 3 specimens. Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach. For early-stage eye diseases, taking two or three doses yields immediate results.
[Eye Pain] Take one chicken liver that has not fallen into water, Furongye (Hibisci Mutabilis Folium) (dried and powdered, 2 qian), Rouguo powder (5 fen), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) (appropriate amount).
[Wind-Fire Red Eye with Swelling and Pain] Take one large radish (Caitou). Cut off the top to serve as a lid, hollow out the center to form a hole. Add 3 fen of raw Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) powder inside. Replace the lid and secure it. Slow-roast until cooked, then remove. Cool the juice extracted from the radish and drip it into the eyes for cure. Take one pig gallbladder and three ancient coins. Steam them together in a cup until dry. Extract the bile and form pills the size of millet grains. Place them in the corner of the eye for effect. Internal formula: Danggui, Huangqin, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Ganju, Shanzhi, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (each 1 qian); Chishao, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng, Longdancao, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (each 8 fen); Huanglian (6 fen); Gancao (5 fen); add Dengxin (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) 20 pieces. Decoct in water and take. Soaking feet in hot water is beneficial for red eye disease; bathing must be avoided as it leads to blindness. Strictly avoid consuming dog, chicken, fish, goose, duck, and eggs. Do not wash the face with cold water.
[Sudden Onset of Swelling and Pain] Take a piece of blue cloth, soak in water, wash clean, and dry. Prepare ginger juice and Baijian (Alumen) powder. Dip the cloth in the mixture and apply it to the eyelids. Close the eyes for a moment; tearing will occur, followed by pain relief.
[All Eye Diseases with Pain, Itching, and Blood-Wind] Take one raw sheep gallbladder, cut open, add honey, tie tightly with thread, and knead evenly. Boil in boiling water for one or two boils, then immediately remove and soak in cold water for half a day. Collect the juice from the gallbladder into a bottle for eye drops. Tearing will cease upon application. Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (peeled and core removed, ground), steamed in human breast milk to extract juice; dripping this into the eyes is most effective.
[Severe Pain in the Eyeball at Night] Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica) and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (each 2 liang). Grind into powder. Take 1.5 qian per dose, mixed with clear tea. Effective after three to four days. (Note: Xiakucao is miraculous for treating Jueyin eye pain.)
[Eyelid Swollen like a Fist] Shuangmei (Rosa Roxburghii Trichocarpa) (3, pitted), Baiguo (Ginkgo Semen) (7, shelled), Qingtong (Bronze dust) (5 fen). Pound into a paste. Place in a porcelain vessel and soak in well water overnight. Filter through cotton paper to remove dregs. (Washing with ancient coins dipped in the filtrate is effective.)
[Excessive Tearing] Jiyu dan (Crucian carp gallbladder) (7), Renru (Human Breast Milk) (1 zhan). Mix evenly and steam thoroughly over rice. Apply to the eyes one or two times to stop tearing.
[Cold Tearing] Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Mimenghua (Descurainiae Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae), Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao, Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus) (thorns removed). Grind equal parts into powder. Start with 1.2 qian per dose, gradually increasing to 2 qian. Take mixed with tea for effect. This applies to dim vision or cold tearing, taken just after waking up in the Zi hour before speaking.
[Tearing in the Wind] Take a ball of Qiai (Artemisia argyi). Burn it to produce smoke and熏 (fumigate) the inside of a porcelain bowl until yellow. Add a pinch of Huanglian and a little Kufan (Calcined Alumen). Add warm water to the bowl and grind with a five-zhu coin to mix. Wash the eyes one or two times for cure. For chronic cases lasting years, use Luganshi (Calamina) (green variety, 1 qian, used multiple times), Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endochoncha) (5 fen), and a little Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum). Grind extremely fine and apply to the outer canthus several times to resolve. (Care must be taken not to let the medicine enter the eyeball.)
[Rotten Margins / Blepharitis] When the eye margins are wet, rotten, red, and swollen, take Er cansha (Mulberry silkworm feces soaked in true sesame oil for 2-3 days), remove, grind finely, and apply to the affected area. Whether new or old, adult or child, one or two applications yield cure. Named "Yi Mo Gao". Two red dates, Mingfan (Alumen) (2-3 fen), Tongqing (Malachite) (2-3 fen), half a zhong of water. Steam until cooked and apply frequently for effect.
[Wind Itch, Cold Tearing, Rotten Margins with Parasites] Take a piece of fresh ginger. Insert a silver hairpin and pull it out immediately. Use the ginger juice on the hairpin to drop into the inner and outer corners of the eyes for great effect.
[Chronic Rotten Margins, Wind-Eye, Parasite Itch] Crush Fupenziye (Rubi Cauliculus) leaves by hand to extract juice. Cover the eye with gauze treated with soap. Draw the outline of the eye orbit on the gauze. Then drip the medicinal juice to soak the lower eyelid margin for one shichen (two hours). Parasites will emerge from the gauze, and the lower margin heals. After a few days, repeat the method for the upper margin. (Note: Fupenzi treats dim vision, cold tearing, etc. Dry the herb, grind fine, wrap in cotton, soak in human breast milk for 1-2 hours, and use for eye drops. Lie supine. Within 3-4 days, vision returns to normal. Avoid oily foods, alcohol, and wheat products.)
[Rotten Margins with Inverted Cilia] Qingfan (Green Alum) (fire-treated to remove toxicity), grind fine, dissolve in water, clarify. Drip and wash 2-3 times for effect.
[Internal Corneal Opacity] Ruiren (Buckwheat Seed) (1 liang, oil removed), Pengsha (Borax) (1 qian), Shexiang (Moschus) (3 fen). Grind extremely fine and store in a porcelain bottle. Apply to the eyes as needed. Highly effective. If red vessels entwine the pupil, use Baixiang (Stercus Caninum) (ground extremely fine), mixed with the first birth milk of a male infant for eye drops. Salt (white snow-like, raw ground to dust). Dip a thick rush light in salt, gently fix the floating opacity, and apply three times until it disappears without pain. Internal formula: Yemingsha (Carpodaci Fructus), Danggui, Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Muzei (de-jointed, 1 liang). Grind into powder. Use black sheep liver (4 liang), boil in water until soft, mix with powder to make pills the size of tung seeds. Take 40-50 pills after meals with warm water. After 100 days, vision returns to original clarity. These are immortal transmissions.
[All Cloudy Opacities and Foggy Membranes Obscuring Vision] Grind Ebusicao (Centipedae Herba) and stuff into the nose. Change frequently. Stimulate sneezing periodically. Vision can return in five days. Also treats red eyes. Quefen (Sparrow droppings) (small and straight). Mix with human breast milk and apply to the eyes. Also treats red veins crossing the pupil and Pterygium (Rou Pan Jing) or Qing Mang (blindness). Extremely effective. Pig gallbladder skin dried in sun, twisted into ropes like chopsticks. Burn to ash, remove fire toxicity. Apply for effect.
[Wind-Strike Opacity with Pain] Cut Xiebai (Allii Macrostemii Bulbus) and place it on the membrane. Remove after a short while. Repeat several times until pain stops and membrane dissolves. (Note: Xiebai is pungent, disperses blood, and moves Qi, thus removing membranes.)
[Qing Mang (Blindness)] Dry Xiaoqingcao (Herba Siegesbeckiae) and grind into powder. Daily, take a piece of pork liver that has not touched water, add 5 qian of grass powder, and boil with unfermented wine. Eat only the liver. Take when full for half a month for effect. Liu sheng of Zhugecaizi (Brassicae Chinensis Semen). Steam until heat penetrates thoroughly. Pour hot water from the pot over it. Dry and repeat steaming/washing/drying three times. Grind into powder. Take 2-3 qian with clear wine when full, twice daily. Treats deficiency consumption causing dim vision, cold tearing, and eye obstructions. Nine out of ten recover.
[Qing Mang and Nyctalopia] Nyctalopia is also called Ji Mang (Chicken Blindness), inability to see at night. Gujingcao (Sparganii Rhizoma) (1 liang) and one sheep liver. Do not touch iron. Cook in a clay pot with water. Eat the sheep liver. Best results achieved this way. (For children: if they refuse to eat, bake dry and make pills.) Shijueming (calcined in charcoal to retain nature), Yemingsha (washed clean, roasted on tile until yellow, each 2 qian), Gujingcao (2 qian). Grind fine. Take one piece of pork liver (untouched by water), slice with a bamboo knife into two halves. Sandwich the powder inside. Tie with hemp fiber. Boil in one bowl of rice water in a clay pot until half remains. Drink the liver and juice before bed. Best results achieved this way.
[Fused Cilia / Trichiasis] Mubiezi (Momordicae Semen) (one, shell removed, ground). Wrap in cotton and stuff into the nose. Left eye disease -> stuff right nostril; Right eye disease -> stuff left nostril. Immediate effect. Pluck hairs first. Then grind Shiyanzi (Swallow's nest stone? Likely a specific mineral/fossil) (one male, one female) with water and apply frequently. Wash frequently with Huanglian juice so they do not grow back. Internal formula: Huanglian (wine-fried), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (each 1 qian), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1.5 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Fangfeng (each 5 fen), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Manjingzi (Vittariae Fructus) (each 5 fen).
[Pterygium] Fu ping cao (Lemna minor) ground into paste, add a little Bingpian (Borneol), apply to the eye. Effective. Baixiang (Stercus Caninum) mixed with human breast milk for eye drops is most effective. Also treats facial acne and freckles.
[Stars in the Eye] At onset, grind Ebusicao and stuff into the nose. Remove overnight. Jiucai gen (Garlic chive root), Ju ye (Chrysanthemum leaf), Ju ye (Chrysanthemum leaf) ground. Must be wrapped in cotton and stuffed into the nose. All effective. For long-standing cases, grind ivory fine, drip into the corner of the eye frequently to remove.
[Kidney Deficiency Dim Vision] Or seeing black lights. Take this formula regularly for brightening. Ganju, Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (each 2 liang), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) (3 liang), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (5 qian). Make pills with refined honey, size of tung seeds. Take 2-3 qian per dose, on an empty stomach or after meals. Twelve small red dates (wash clean in cold water, remove stems), Gouqi.
[Liver Deficiency Eye Opacity] For those with Qi and Blood deficiency, the white part of the eye is entirely red. Haibangke (Concha Mercenariae) (burned to ash), Muzei cao (de-jointed and baked). Equal parts ground into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with ginger and dates in water, consume with dregs. Twice daily for effect.
[Eye Growth/Pseudopterygium] Fresh Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (with leaves, pounded for juice). Drip 3-4 times daily to recede. Carp gallbladder juice mixed with Huangdan (Lead Oxide) (1-2 qian) to form a paste. Drip 3-5 times daily for effect.
[Gan Eye Disease] Zhuhencao (Herba Linderniae) boiled with sheep liver is effective. (Also known as Yin-Yang Cao, because its leaves open in the morning and close in the evening.)
[Eye Trauma Bruising] Sheng Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) ground into powder, mixed with water and applied. Cures immediately. For internal eye injury, use sheep gall, chicken gall, carp gall (equal parts).
[Toxic Abscess in Eye] Jizuiké (Chicken beak shell) (baked dry on tile, ground fine). Add Ruxiang, Moyao, Shexiang (a little each). Grind fine, mix with sesame oil, apply to eye orbit for cure.
[Smallpox Scars Entering Eye] Mapibo (Polyporus umbellatus?), Shetui (Snake Slough) (each 5 qian), Zaojiaozi (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) (14 seeds). Put in clay pot, seal with salt mud. Calcine until charred but retaining nature, grind fine. Take 1 qian with warm wine after meals.
[Foreign Body - Fly Filament] (Occurs in spring high winds, usually falling from above.) Red and swollen like a peach. Treatable within 3-5 days. Scrape a little head垢 (dandruff/scalp dirt) from under a comb and rub into the corner of the eye to expel. Also treats redness and swelling. Mustard juice dripped in works instantly. Chicken comb blood dropped into the eye helps grasp and remove the filament. Fine nail scrapings mixed with saliva applied causes the filament to gather; pull it out for effect. Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) crushed and inserted into the nostril: left eye ailment -> stuff right nostril; right eye ailment -> stuff left nostril.
[Spider Web in Eye] Grind Jingmo (Beijing Ink) thick. Use a new brush to dip into the corner of the eye. Gently wipe the eye after a short time to expel. If the filament remains, apply ink again. Treats other foreign bodies.
[Any Foreign Body in Eye] Fine nail scrapings mixed with saliva. Apply with a rush light to expel. Machixian (Portulacae Herba) from the east wall (dried, burned to ash, ground fine). Apply to the head slightly to expel.
[Wheat Awn in Eye] Wash with boiled barley water to expel.
[Hordeolum (Stye)] If left eye, tie a red thread around the base of the middle finger of the right hand. If right eye, tie around the left hand. Cured overnight.
[Lump on Eyelid] Grind Yingtao he (Cherry seed) with water and apply. Gradually diminishes daily.
