[General Discussion] Lower back pain varies according to dampness, heat, cold, qi stagnation, and kidney deficiency. However, most patients suffer from this due to insufficiency of true yin. Therefore, it is appropriate to nourish the kidney qi. Cases caused by excess pathogens account for only two or three out of ten.
[Damp-Heat Lower Back and Leg Pain] When painful, the lumbar vertebrae feel stiff as a board, preventing flexion and extension. For those whose pain worsens during rainy weather or after prolonged sitting, use Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (soaked in rice wash water overnight, dried, sliced, 3 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (stir-fried with wine, each 1 qian). Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach until cured.
[Cold-Damp Lower Back Pain] Weilingxian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian) and good liquor (1 jin) are steamed to extract the flavor. Drink two cups on an empty stomach daily. Relief occurs once slight bowel movement is achieved. This also treats lower back pain due to phlegm accumulation, and leg pain due to cold-dampness.
[Piercing Lower Back Pain] With facial edema, dark and dirty complexion, extreme depletion of qi and blood, hair loss, dry teeth, excessive saliva, nasal discharge, and phlegm, where pain prevents walking or standing: use fresh Deer Antler (Lu Rong) (discard those with yellow centers; scrape off black skin, take the white part, grind into powder, 4 liang, stir-fry until yellow). Grind into fine powder, add Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (5 qian), and form pills. Take on an empty stomach with wine.
For pain with stiffness and difficulty extending: Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) (3 qian, ground into powder). Take with salt water.
[Kidney Deficiency Lower Back Pain] The pain feels lingering and sorrowful, recurring frequently. It is triggered by exertion. Use Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Buguzhi (Bungeae Fructus), and Qingyan (Lithii Carbonas). Grind into powder together. Place inside a pig kidney and steam until cooked. Take with good wine. Continuous administration yields results. Xiao Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus) ground into powder, taken with stewed pig kidney, is also effective. Yangshen (Ovis/Capis Kidney) ground into powder, taken 2 qian with wine per dose, three times daily. This greatly tonifies kidney qi and benefits essence and marrow.
[Lower Back Pain from Trauma and Blood Stasis] Juhe (Citri Reticulatae Fructus Immaturus) (stir-fried, peel removed, 2 qian). Grind into powder and take mixed with wine. Once daily.
[Resolving Various Poisons] If one wakes up feeling discomfort in the abdomen, test immediately with raw beans. If no bean smell is detected upon entering the mouth, poisoning has occurred. Immediately decoct Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) in water, drink continuously, and induce vomiting by stimulating the throat to resolve the toxicity. Baila (Beeswax) (one piece, finely ground) is stirred evenly in clear water and ingested. Vomiting and diarrhea indicate resolution.
[Poisoning by Multiple Medicines] Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) or strong decoction of Lv Dou (Phaseoli Semen) can be drunk to resolve hundred poisons. Even in critical cases where eyes and mouth are closed but breath remains, urgently administer Bai Tang (Rock Sugar), Dan Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean), Dian Hua (Indigo Naturalis), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (equal parts, finely ground), mixed with cold water and forced down to restore consciousness. Alternatively, excessive medication causing facial edema, cracked lips bleeding, chest/abdominal fullness, or pulling pain below the navel: use Ma Liao Dou (Vicia Faba) and Lv Dou (Phaseoli Semen) (each 3-4 he), decoct juice, and consume with the beans. Cured when symptoms subside. Excessive intake of wind-dispelling herbs causing confusion and unconsciousness: decoct Gan Cao with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Freshum) and take in one dose.
[Poisoning by Fuzi and Tianxiong] Lv Dou (Phaseoli Semen) and Xiao Hei Dou (Black Soybeans) (soaked in water, crushed for juice) are taken orally or as a decoction.
[Poisoning by Ban Dou (Croton Seed)] Symptoms include thirst, red face, five-palm heat, and continuous dysentery. Chuan Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (2 qian, stir-fried) and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (1 qian, processed) are decocted and taken. Juice of Bajiao Genye (Musa Basjoo Root and Leaf) is crushed and drunk; relief comes when diarrhea stops. Cold Lv Dou decoction is also effective.
[Lead White Poisoning] Soap water is灌 (administered) to induce vomiting, which resolves toxicity. Sugar water is also effective.
[Raw Pinellia Poisoning] Causes aphonia. Jiang Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) is administered. (Effective even in critical cases.)
[Gou Wen (Aconitum Kernianum) Poisoning] Grows by ponds, resembling celery but distinguishable by hairy stems. Ingestion is fatal. Urgently take eggs (specifically brooding eggs not yet hatched), crush them, mix with Sesame Oil (Ma You), and administer. Vomiting the poison allows survival. Alternatively, White Duck Blood or Sheep Blood can be administered. Or use Ji (Platycodon Grandiflorus, specifically the sweet variety) (8 liang), decoct strongly, and take warm in two doses.
[Wild Mushroom Poisoning] Rendong Teng (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis) can be eaten raw or decocted strongly for drinking. Alternatively, black soybean juice or Di Jiang Shui (Earth Slurry Water) (see Shang Han Men) can be used.
[Closed Pepper Poisoning] Accidental ingestion causes tongue numbness, mental agitation, foaming at the mouth, and in severe cases, cold body approaching death. Di Jiang Shui (Earth Slurry Water) is administered. Vinegar can also resolve it. If only qi obstruction exists, well water suffices.
[Sheng Dan (Mercuric Oxide) Poisoning] Large amounts of Di Jiang Shui (Earth Slurry Water) are effective. For oral ulcers, Lv Dou juice is taken first.
[Accidental Ingestion of Tung Oil] Causes incessant vomiting. Hot wine drunk urgently resolves it.
[Resolving Fruit Poisoning] She Xiang (Moschus) (1 fen) decocted in water is taken. Or pork bone ash mixed with water. Madness from excessive Bai Guo (Ginkgo Biloba) is treated with Bai Xiang Gu (dried fish bone) decoction. Pediatric illness from excessive Ling Jiao (Trapa Natans) is cured by eating turtle meat soup.
[Resolving Gu Poisoning] Signs include: tasting bitter alum as sweet, beans lacking fishy smell, and spittle sinking in water. Or holding a black bean that swells and sheds skin indicates Gu poison. For Gu in the upper jiao: Bai Fan (Alumen) and Jian Cha (Tea) (each 3 qian) mixed with fresh well water induce vomiting of toxins. Repeat if necessary. Or use Qing You (Green Oil) to induce vomiting. In Gu-infested areas, avoid food with spider webs. Preventatively, chew 1 cun of Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice) before eating. If poisoned, vomit occurs. Then treat with Zhi Gan Cao and Sheng Jiang (each 2-3 liang), decocted, taken three times daily.
[Liquor Poisoning] Unconsciousness after days of drunkenness: Da Hei Dou (Large Black Beans) (1 sheng) decocted in water, taken warm. Effective even near death. Apnea from drunkenness: Wash a urine bucket, pour boiling water in, wait briefly, take the clear supernatant, and slowly swallow.
[Death from Spirits Intoxication] Half a cup of condensation water from a pot lid is administered. Cold mud is applied to the chest; reapply when dry until the mud becomes wet, indicating efficacy.
[Resolving Poison from Self-Dead Livestock] Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) ground into thick juice is drunk. Strong Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean) decoction, or Xiong Shu Shi (Male Rat Feces) (pointed at both ends) ground and mixed with water, or two bowls of human milk are all effective.
[Beef Poisoning] Zhu Ya (Pig Teeth) (calcined to ash) mixed with water. Or Gan Cao juice is effective. Horse meat poisoning: Re Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma) decoction or good wine resolves it. Avoid drinking water. Raw abscess meat from cattle/horses: Sheng Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) pounded with wine. Ju Ye (Chrysanthemi Folium) (leaf, flower, or root) is crushed.
[Dog Meat Poisoning] Epigastric hardness, abdominal distension, dry mouth, sudden fever, and delirium. Re Gen juice boiled and taken. For undigested meat consumption, drinking the juice or brain of the respective animal aids digestion.
[Pork Injury] Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) decoction, Jiu Cai (Allii Tuberosi Herba) juice boiled, or Xia Ming (Natrii Sulfas) decoction are effective. Unknown food poison: Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) decoction induces vomiting for safety.
[Excessive Poultry Consumption] Sheng Bai Bian Dou (White Hyacinth Bean) (ground) mixed with cold water. Poison from birds/beasts killed by herbal arrows: Hei Da Dou (Black Soybeans) decocted with a little salt.
[Excessive Egg Consumption] Mi Cu (Rice Vinegar) (3-4 sips) resolves it.
[River Fish Poisoning] One bowl of Xiang You (Sesame Oil) induces vomiting. Gan Lan (Canarium Album) decoction, Re Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma), or Fen Qing (Urine Supernatant) are remedies.
[Various Fish Poison] Gan Lan (Canarium Album) decoction or Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) strong decoction taken cold resolves it. (Fish without gills or with large gills are toxic; turtles with red algae patterns on the belly are toxic.)
[Crab Poison] Zi Su (Perillae Folium) and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Freshum) decoction. Da Suan (Allii Sativi Bulbus) juice or Hei Dou (Black Soybeans) decoction resolve it. Combined with persimmon causing severe vomiting/diarrhea: Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) juice stops it.
[Turtle Meat Poison] Lan Zhi (Indigo Juice) several bowls bring peace. Dian Qing Shui (Indigo Water) is a substitute.
[Leech Ingestion] Common in those eating much celery. Eating small yellow clay balls on an empty stomach expels them via stool.
[Accidental Leech Ingestion] Honey dissolves them. Leeches in wells are dissolved by Bai Ma Gu (Equi Os). Ingested insects are resolved by Sesame Oil inducing vomiting.
[Centipede Poison] Tongue swelling: Ji Guan Xue (Galli Cristis Sanguis) drunk raw. External injury: blood applied topically. Severe abdominal pain from poison: Cooked egg (one) split open, half-shell placed on umbilicus with a piece of silver coin inside for one hour. Silver turns black; change twice to stop pain. If unable to vomit long-term poison: Cooked egg and Xia Ming (Natrii Sulfas) pounded into paste and swallowed. Diarrhea brings relief. Food suspected of poison: Boil with plenty of Sesame Oil to detoxify.
[All Food Poisons] Unknown poison with no immediate remedy: Ji (Platycodon Grandiflorus) and Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 liang) decocted, cooled, mixed with honey, taken in three doses.
[Musk Incense Poison] Unconsciousness from contact: Cold water restores consciousness.
