[General Discussion] The symptoms of jaundice are classified into Huang Dan (Yellow Jaundice), Gu Dan (Grain Jaundice), Se Dan (Color Jaundice), Lao Dan (Fatigue Jaundice), and Jiu Dan (Alcohol Jaundice). Generally, these belong to Damp-Heat syndromes. This is because Damp-Heat accumulates in the Spleen and Stomach; over time, it fails to dissipate, causing the color of Earth to manifest on the face and skin. Individuals who are often depressed or frustrated are prone to this disease. Although it involves Damp-Heat, cold and bitter drugs should not be used exclusively. They must be assisted by sweet and warm herbs, combined with methods that promote diuresis and purging heat. In this way, dampness is easily eliminated, heat is easily resolved, and the disease heals itself. If only cooling drugs are used, they will severely damage the Spleen Earth; dampness may not be removed, heat may not be cleared, and abdominal distension may result instead. (The pulse should be surging, rapid, floating, and large; if it is faint and choppy, it is difficult to treat.)
[Grain Jaundice] Grain Jaundice is characterized by dizziness after eating, restlessness and discomfort in the heart region, caused by irregular eating habits leading to disharmony between hunger and fullness. The Qi of the Stomach steams upward, causing yellowing. The prescription consists of Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) (2 liang), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) (1 liang, crushed), and Niu Danzhi (Bovis Bile) (1 liang). Add a small amount of refined honey and form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills each time, washed down with boiling water or ginger decoction.
[Alcohol Jaundice] Alcohol Jaundice presents with yellowing of the body and eyes, swelling of the lower legs, red urine, yellow complexion with red macules. It is caused by stomach heat after drinking alcohol, lying in a draft while intoxicated, and stagnation of dampness. The prescription consists of Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (3 qian), Shanzhiren (Gardeniae Semen), Danshizhi (Fermented Soybean) (bran-fried, 2 qian each), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus) (bran-fried, 2 qian each), and Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Continue until cured.
[Yellow Jaundice] Yellow Jaundice usually arises from improper diet and fatigue. The Spleen Earth fails to transport and transform, leading to internal stagnation of Damp-Heat. The entire body and face appear as yellow as gold. The prescription consists of Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (each 1 liang), and Fuling (Poria) (1.5 liang). Grind into powder, mix with hot water, and take 5 qian each time, three times daily. Drink plenty of hot soup after taking the medicine; sweating indicates recovery. Alternatively, remove the tail of a river snail, take only the head meat, soak it in rice vinegar, and eat it several times until cured. If a fishy smell is perceived when eating, it is not Yellow Jaundice. Patients with jaundice should eat more water chestnuts; whether raw or cooked, it is effective. If the yellow color is scorched/dry and accompanied by thirst, it is difficult to treat.
[Food Stagnation Yellow Jaundice] Use old loofah (burned with seeds until carbonized, ground into powder). Take 2 qian each time. If caused by flour foods, wash down with noodle soup; if caused by alcohol, wash down with light wine. Continue for several doses until cured.
[Fatigue Jaundice in Women] After severe fatigue and high fever, or after sexual exhaustion, the body is constrained by water and dampness. This leads to fever and aversion to cold at dusk, urgency in the bladder, fullness in the hypogastrium, yellow eyes, black forehead, abdominal distension resembling water accumulation, black stool that is sometimes loose. Hence it is called Black Jaundice. The prescription consists of Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhi Huangqi (Astragali Radix Preparata), and Baibiandou (Dolichoris Semen) (stir-fried, 3 qian each), and Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (1 qian). Add five slices of fresh ginger and two dates. Decoct in water and take orally. Continue until cured. After recovery from jaundice, avoid salt and pickled goose for one hundred days.
[Universal Prescription for All Types of Jaundice] Pingdimu (Plants growing on mountains, found everywhere. Leaves resemble Camellia but are darker/older in color; bear red fruits in winter like Nantianzhu fruits. Woody plants about one chi tall, evergreen in winter). Collect leaves, decoct in water, and drink as tea. Effect is seen within a few days. Heishanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Luobozzi (Raphani Semen) (stir-fried, equal parts, ground into powder). Take 2-3 qian each time. (Even if food intake is poor and the condition is critical, if there is Damp-Heat, take 3 qian, two to three times; reduce dose for deficiency-type yellowing). Tianqingdibaiye (Leaves of *Houttuynia cordata*; found mostly in flatlands. Leaves resemble Camellia but are narrow, green on top and white underneath, hence the name. Collect leaves in spring, decoct in water, mix with powder, and take. Decoct daily to drink as tea; effect is immediate). Sanbaicao (Hydrocotilis Japonicae Herba) (crush to extract juice, one teacup). Take on an empty stomach mixed with raw baijiu (winter use roots; if dry, grind to powder, 3 qian, take with wine). Gouqigen (Lycii Radicis Cortex) crush to extract juice, take mixed with hot raw baijiu. Tu Niuxi (Cyathulae Radix) 4 liang, Sheng Bai [Text missing]. After recovery, avoid all fresh stimulating foods and maintain a bland diet.
[Deficiency Jaundice] After a Yin-deficiency illness, improper conditioning leads to a whole-body appearance resembling jaundice. Symptoms include tinnitus, bland taste in mouth, palpitations, slight fever, weakness in limbs, lethargy and desire to sleep, weak ankles, and fine pulse. Treat with Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction). Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried, 2.5 qian each), Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparata), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (dosage missing in text).
[Food Stagnation Spleen Disease with Yellow Swelling] Qingfan (Vitriolum Cupri et Ferri) (4 liang, calcined until turning into red beads), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (4 liang, soaked in wine for seven days, dried), Baicaoshuang (Carbonis Folii Betulae) (3 liang). All ground into powder. Use the wine in which Guishen was soaked as a binder to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 5-7 pills each time with warm water. Complete recovery after one month.
[Stasis Blood Causing Yellowing] Arises from excessive physical strain or falls/blows. Symptoms include body fever, free urination, black stool, and a knotted/choppy pulse. The prescription consists of Taoren (Persicae Semen), Danpi (Moutan Cortex) (each 1 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) (each 8 fen), and Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (6 fen). Decoct in half a bowl of water until reduced by half. Add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (stir-fried, 1-2 qian). Boil again for one or two boils. Take hot at Wu Geng (3-5 AM). Recovery occurs upon passing black material. (This is Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang, treating all stasis blood conditions with fullness and severe pain).
[Yellow Sweat] The whole body is swollen, sweating occurs without thirst. The sweat can dye clothes like cypress juice. This is a disease where heat exists in the Spleen and Stomach, sweating is closed by wind pathogens, and heat knots internally. The prescription consists of Sheng Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (each 2 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (4 liang), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (core removed), Danshizhi (Fermented Soybean) (each 1 liang), and Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (5 qian). All ground into powder. Take 5 qian each time, mixed with light ginger soup, taken long after meals.
[Yellow Disease] Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia; see the chapter on Consumption/Loss). Follow the dosage, add Qingfan (Vitriolum Cupri et Ferri) 2 liang (the deep-colored, clear, pure variety from Lv Fan, stir-fried with vinegar until red). Grind into powder, mix evenly, form honey pills. Take 2 qian each time, morning and evening with hot water.
