[Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit)]
Taste: bitter. Nature: cold to very cold. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: It treats pathogenic factors in the five zang organs, heat qi in the stomach, facial redness, rhinophyma (alcoholic nose), white leprosy, and red leprosy, as well as sores and conditions of the yang valleys. The fruits are harvested in the ninth lunar month and dried in the sun. It resolves the toxicity of Zhi Zhu (Rhododendron molle). It is found everywhere, with two or three varieties having slight differences; those with seven ridges are considered superior. They should be harvested only after frost. Currently, it is mostly used for dyeing and is rarely used in medicine. Zhi Zhu refers to Rhododendron molle.
[Binglang (Areca Seed)]
Taste: pungent. Nature: warm. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: It promotes digestion of grains, expels water retention, eliminates phlegm, kills three types of parasites, removes fu shi (hidden pathogens/ghosts), and treats inchworm tapeworm (Taenia saginata). It grows in the South Sea region.
There are three or four varieties: Those from Jiaozhou are small in shape and sweet in taste; those south of Guangzhou are large in shape and astringent in taste, with large seeds; the exceptionally large ones are named Chu (note: text likely contains transcription error or specific local name); people in the south call it Nazi, and commoners call it Binglang Sun, which is also edible.
[Sujing's Note] Among Areca seeds, there is an exceptionally large variety that rots if kept for several days. Those imported from the north are first boiled in ash lye, then smoked over fire until dry, allowing them to be stored for a long time. The kernel inside treats abdominal distension; when raw and ground into powder and taken orally, it promotes urination and bowel movements; applied externally to sores, it generates flesh and relieves pain. Burned to ash, it treats angular cheilitis (white sores at the mouth corners). It grows in Jiaozhou, Aizhou, and Kunlun.
[Hehuan (Albizia Bark)]
Taste: sweet, neutral. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: It calms the five zang organs, harmonizes the mind and spirit, and brings joy and freedom from worry. Long-term use makes the body light, improves vision, and fulfills desires. It grows in the valleys of Yizhou.
Ji Kang’s "Essay on Nourishing Life" also states: Hehuan dispels anger, and Xuannao (Daylily) forgets sorrow. Poets mention Xuannao, stating it is the same as the current Luchong (Hemerocallis citrina), but it is not used in medicine. As for Hehuan, most people in society do not recognize it. Because it lacks significant therapeutic effects for curing diseases, it has been slightly neglected, leading to its decline. Just like methods for longevity, even in the Hualin Garden in Luoyang, people still say Hehuan resembles a forest of Dingxiang (Clove/Syzygium), but it does not reach the Jiangzuo (south of the Yangtze) region.
[Sujing's Note] This tree has leaves similar to those of Gleditsia sinensis and Sophora japonica, extremely fine. It flowers in the fifth lunar month with red and white blossoms. It is found in mountain streams everywhere. Currently, it is also planted in the residences and gardens of the Eastern and Western Capitals near ponds and pools. It is called Hehuan or Hehun. In autumn, it produces pods with extremely thin and fine seeds.
