(Bone of the Muntjac Deer) Slightly warm. Indicated for deficiency and wasting, seminal emission. Meat: warm; tonifies the five zang organs. Marrow: benefits qi and strength, brightens and moistens the complexion.
Commonly called "white meat," it is indeed the muntjac deer, distinct from the deer (Lu). It is noted for having a white gallbladder and being prone to fright and terror. Also referred to as "Jun." Jun meat should not be consumed with Swan meat, as doing so may lead to stubborn accumulation disorders (Zheng Gu).
(Bone of the Fox/Raccoon Dog) Indicated for dispelling evil qi, killing Gui Zhu poison, arresting palpitations, and treating malignant ulcers and scrofula (Shu Lou). The skull bone is particularly effective. Ointment: treats dog bite wounds. Claws: ward off evil spirits. Meat: treats nausea and vomiting, benefits qi and strength.
(Flesh of the Tiger) Folklore states that eating hot tiger flesh damages teeth, which is indeed true. A tiger head pillow wards off nightmares; hanging it on the door wards off ghosts. A tiger nose hung on the door is said to facilitate the birth of male children. Bones mixed with cinnabar-inscribed talismans treat evil pathogens. Whiskers treat toothache. Claws tied around a child's arm ward off evil ghosts.
[Note] *Bie Lu* records: Feces treat malignant ulcers. Eyes treat epilepsy. Bones from feces, calcined to ash, treat fire burns. Teeth treat ulcers on the glans penis of men and carbuncles. Nose treats epilepsy and infantile convulsions.
(Bone of the Leopard) Sour in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Indicated for calming the five zang organs, repairing severe injuries, lightening the body, benefiting qi, and providing long-term health benefits.
Leopards are extremely rare, and their uses are few; only the tail is considered precious.
[Note] The "Yin Yang Divine Leopard Tail" and the leopard tails used in imperial processions carry names worthy of respect. It is unclear what reasoning Tao Hongjing relied upon regarding the specific value of genuine leopard tails.
(Meat/Parts of the Raccoon Dog/Fox) Sweet in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Indicated for Feng Zhu, Shi Zhu, and Gui Zhu. Symptoms include toxic vapors moving under the skin like needle pricks, epigastric and abdominal pain, and wandering pain without fixed location, as well as scrofulous malignant ulcers. The skull bone is particularly effective. Meat also treats various Zhu diseases. Penis: treated amenorrhea and impotence in men. Calcined and taken with east-flowing water.
There are many types of Li (fox/raccoon dog); currently, the "Hu Li" (tiger-like fox) is used, not the domestic cat. Domestic cats are also acceptable, but their bones are difficult to process, so they should be obtained separately to be reliable. There is also a creature called "Bi" (pronounced Xin), yellow in color and foul-smelling. Its meat also treats scrofula. Making soup from this meat or regular raccoon dog meat follows standard methods and is excellent.
[Note] Ash from raccoon dog feces is highly effective for treating cold-heat Gui Malaria with irregular onset. Domestic raccoon dogs are also good, also known as cats.
