[Shilongchu]
Bitter, slightly cold and slightly warm, non-toxic. Primarily treats evil qi in the heart and abdomen, difficult urination, strangury (Lin syndrome) and urinary retention, wind-dampness, Guizhu (a contagious or psychosomatic disease), and malignant toxins. It tonifies internal deficiency and insufficiency, treats fullness and stagnation (Piman), lack of luster in the body, abnormal sweating, removes heat and pain in the urethra, and kills the toxic vapors of Guizhu. Long-term use tonifies emaciation and weakness, lightens the body, sharpens hearing and vision, and prolongs life. Also known as Longxu, Caoxuduan, Longzhu, Longhua, Xuanwan, and Caodu. Those with nine nodes and strong aroma are superior. Grows in valley wetlands of Liangzhou. Stems are harvested in May and July and sun-dried. The stems are green, slender, and connected; the fruits are red. Currently found near water and stones along roadsides, resembling Dongyang Longxu; those used for making mats simply have more nodes.
[Note] *Bielu* states: Also known as Fangbin, primarily treats roundworms and indigestion.
[Luo Shi]
Bitter, warm and slightly cold, non-toxic. Primarily treats wind-heat, dead flesh (muscle necrosis or numbness), sores and injuries, dry mouth, scorched tongue, persistent swelling and abscesses, swelling of the throat and tongue causing obstruction, inability to swallow fluids, fright entering the abdomen, expels evil qi, nourishes the Kidney, treats pain in the lower back and hips, strengthens sinews and bones, promotes free flow of joints, long-term use lightens the body, brightens the eyes, moistens the skin, and improves spirit. Also known as Shiling, Shicuo, Lueshi, Mingshi, Lingshi, and Xuanshi. Grows in valleys of Tai Mountain, on the shady side of rocky mountains, on high mountain rocks, or among human dwellings. Harvested in January.
Eucommia Ulmoidis Cortex (Duzhong) and Paeonia Suffruticosa Radix (Mudanpi) act as guiding herbs (Shi). It is incompatible with Iron Scale (Tieluo), and fears Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb (Beimu) and Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Changpu). Those unfamiliar with this herb find it useless in both immortal and secular methods; some claim it is a stone type. Since it is said to grow among humans, it is not a stone, just like Dendrobium (Shihu), named after its attachment to stones.
[Note] This plant grows in shady and damp places, remains evergreen in winter and summer, has black and round fruits, and its stems creep and wrap around trees and rocks. When growing among stones, the leaves are fine, dense, round, and short; when wrapping around trees, the leaves are large and thin. Cultivated by households is excellent. Because it wraps around stones and trees while growing, it is named Luoshi (*Luo* meaning to wrap/bind). *Bielu* calls it Shilongteng, primarily treating viper bites; juice squeezed from the plant is used to wash the wound, and ingesting the juice also removes snake venom-induced chest oppression. For cuts, axe wounds, and other sores, applying it externally leads to immediate healing.
