寒生津法。每见近时之医,不究六气者多,一交秋令,便云秋燥。不知初秋烦热,是为秋暑;

(Attachment: Autumn Coolness)
In the seventh month, when the Great Fire star moves westward, the summer heat gradually diminishes while coolness begins to arise. At this time, residual hot qi still exists, resembling midsummer, and there are even years that are hotter than midsummer. When people contract this heat pathogen and fall ill, it is called "Autumn Summerheat" (Qiushu), commonly known in secular terms as the "Autumn Tiger." During this period, damp earth governs the climate, characterized by the steaming interaction of summerheat and dampness. If one observes high fever, restlessness, thirst, profuse sweating, and a pulse that is surging, soggy, or rapid, these are signs of Autumn Summerheat. The treatment method is the same as for Yang Summerheat (Yangshu, summerheat contracted from external heat), and the Qingliang Dishu Method (Cooling and Clearing Summerheat Method) is appropriate.
If, since the beginning of autumn, cool air invades the person, contracting this cool qi leads to headache, aversion to cold, fever, absence of sweating, and a floating, wiry, or tight pulse. These are signs of Autumn Coolness (Qiuliang). The treatment method is no different from Yin Summerheat (Yinshu, summerheat complicated by cold/damp), and the Xinwen Jiebiao Method (Acrid-Warm Exterior-Resolving Method) is appropriate.
After the Autumn Equinox, when dry metal governs the climate, encountering signs of Autumn Coolness constitutes the excess energy of dryness (Shengqi), and the Kuwen Pingzao Method (Bitter-Warm Drying-Dampness-Pacifying Method) should be used. Encountering signs of Autumn Summerheat constitutes the retaliatory energy of dryness (Fuqi), and the Ganhan Shengjin Method (Sweet-Cold Generating-Fluids Method) should be used.
I often observe that many contemporary physicians do not investigate the Six Qi (Liuqi, six climatic factors). Upon entering autumn, they immediately attribute symptoms to Autumn Dryness (Qiuzao). They fail to realize that the irritant heat in early autumn is Autumn Summerheat; furthermore, they ignore that damp earth governs at this time, mistaking summerheat and dampness for dryness. Is this not highly erroneous?
Qingying Hanmie Method (Clearing Camp Level and Defending Against Malaria Method): Treats summerheat malaria presenting with severe chills and high fever, thirst, and desire to drink.
* Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum, 1.5 qian, heart removed)
* Zhuye (Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens Leaf, 1.5 qian)
* Biandouyi (Dolichos Lablab Seed Coat, 2 qian)
* Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 1.5 qian)
* Muzeicao (Equiseti Herba, 1 qian)
* Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian, stir-fried with wine)
* Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1.5 qian)
Add one slice of Xiguacuiyi (Watermelon Rind) as a guide drug.
This is the method for treating summerheat malaria. Since summerheat resides internally within the Ying (Nutrient) level, Lianqiao and Zhuye are used as Sovereign herbs to clear Heart fire and remove heat from the Upper Jiao. Biandouyi and Qinghao are used as Minister herbs to resolve summerheat and expel malaria. Muzeicao is used as an Assistant herb to induce sweating externally, while Huangqin clears heat internally. As the ancients stated, malaria is inseparable from the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel, so Qingpi is used as an Envoy herb to guide the formulas to the Shaoyang channel, and watermelon rind guides latent summerheat to emerge through the skin surface.
Xinsan Taiyang Method (Acrid-Sun-Taiyang Resolving Method): Treats wind malaria characterized by less chills and more heat, headache, and spontaneous sweating; also treats Cold Damage (Shanghan) and injury by dampness.
* Neng Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus Tender Branch, 1 qian)
* Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1.5 qian)
* Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1.5 qian)
* Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian)
* Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, 1.5 qian)
* Danshichi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum, 3 qian)
Add two slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and three dates (Jujubae Fructus), decoct and take orally.
When external pathogens invade the body, they first damage the exterior of the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel. Although malaria originates from latent summerheat, it must be triggered by external autumn wind. Because wind malaria involves wind pathogen in the exterior, an acrid-resolving formula is suitable. Guizhi, Qianghuo, Fangfeng, and Gancao constitute the Chengfang Guizhi Qianghuo Tang (Standard Formula Cinnamon Twig and Notopterygium Decoction), originally designed for wind malaria. Added Qianhu disperses Taiyang pathogen and vents Jueyin (Terminal Yin) pathogen. Danshiji resolves the muscle layer and expels malaria. Adding Shengjiang to repel external pathogens and Jujubae Fructus to secure the interior brings peace to both exterior and interior, leaving no room for malaria.
Xuantou Moyuan Method (Ventilating and Penetrating Membrane Source Method): Treats damp malaria characterized by severe chills and slight heat, body pain with sweating, heavy limbs, and epigastric fullness.
* Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 qian, ginger-processed)
* Binglang (Arecae Semen, 1.5 qian)
* Caoguoren (Tsaoko Cardamomi Fructus, 0.8 qian, roasted)
* Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian, wine-stir-fried)
* Fen Gancao (Licorice Root Powder, 0.5 qian)
* Huoxiangye (Agastaches Herba, 1 qian)
* Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian, ginger-processed)
Add three slices of Shengjiang as a guide drug.
This method follows the Da Ke Yuan Yin (Reach the Origin Drink) principle. Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) is removed due to its bitter-cold nature, and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is removed due to its sour-astringent property. Houpo, Binglang, and Caoguo are retained to reach the Moyuan (Membrane Source) and expel entrenched pathogens. Huangqin clears residual dry-heat, and Gancao harmonizes the middle. Huoxiang and Banxia are added to promote qi flow and regulate the Spleen. Shengjiang breaks yin-cold and transforms dampness. For malaria caused by damp-turbidity invading the Moyuan, this method will surely be effective.

Xuanqiao Dao Tan Method (Orifice-Venting Phlegm-Guiding Method): (See previous section)
Fangxiang Huazhuo Method (Aromatic Turbidity-Transforming Method): (See previous section)
Hejie Jian Gong Method (Harmonizing and Attacking Method): Treats alternating chills and fever malaria accompanied by internal accumulation.
* Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.5 qian)
* Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian, wine-stir-fried)
* Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian, ginger-processed)
* Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.6 qian)
* Yuanmingfen (Natrii Sulfas, 2 qian)
* Shu Jun (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma Prepared, 2 qian)
* Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, 1.5 qian)
Decoct with flowing water and take orally.
Chaihu, Huangqin, Banxia, and Gancao are used for harmonization; Yuanmingfen, Shu Jun, and Zhiqiao are used for purging the interior. This imitates Zhang Zhongjing’s Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction).
Ganhan Shengjin Method (Sweet-Cold Generating-Fluids Method): Treats Dan Malaria (Febrile Malaria) characterized by heat only without chills, hot hands and feet, and nausea.
* Da Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 5 qian)
* Da Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 3 qian, heart removed)
* Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum, 3 qian, heart removed)
* Zhuye (Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens Leaf, 1.5 qian)
* Beishashen (Glehniae Radix, 3 qian)
* Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 4 qian, roasted)
Add one cup each of Zhe Jiang (Saccharum Sinensis Juice) and Lizhi (Pyrus Sinkiangensis Juice) to mix and take.
Under the Dan Malaria clause in *Jin Gui Yao Lue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet), it states only: "Stop it through dietary management." Yu Jiayan advocated that Sweet-Cold Generating-Fluids methods can cure it. I established this method following this instruction. First, using Shengdi and Maidong, sweet-cold and cloying substances generate body fluids. This condition involves the Heart, Lung, and Stomach channels. Thus, Lianqiao and Zhuye clear the Heart, Shashen clears the Lung, Shigao and Zhe Jiang clear the Stomach, and Lizhi generates fluids.
Xuanyang Toufu Method (Yang-Ventilating Latent-Pathogen-Expelling Method): Treats Pin Malaria (Yin Malaria) characterized by severe chills and slight heat, or cold only without heat.
* Dan Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 qian)
* Dan Fupian (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, 1 qian)
* Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 qian, ginger-processed)
* Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 qian, soil-stir-fried)
* Caoguoren (Tsaoko Cardamomi Fructus, 1 qian, roasted)
* Shuqi (Perillae Folium / Specific Antimalarial Herb, 1.5 qian)
Add three pods of Baidoukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), shell removed, finely ground, and taken separately.
Ganjiang ventilates Yang qi, Fuzi controls excessive Yin, Houpo opens stagnant qi, Cangzhu transforms damp-yin, Caoguo treats predominant cold, and Shuqi drives away knotted malaria pathogens. With Doukou as an assistant, not only does it successfully vent latent pathogens, but it also dispels cold and transforms dampness. Applied to Pin Malaria, is it not suitable!
Huatan Shunqi Method (Phlegm-Resolving Qi-Smooth Method): (See previous section)
Zhaju Pingwei Method (Hawthorn-Fermented Grain Stomach-Calming Method): (See previous section)
Quxie Bisui Method (Pathogen-Expelling Evil-Averting Method): Treats Gui Malaria (Ghost Malaria) characterized by daily alternating chills and fever, frequent fear/terror, and a pulse that fluctuates between large and small.
* Longgu (Dinosaur Bone, 3 qian, calcined)
* Fuling (Poria, 3 qian, stained yellow with Xionghuang)
* Mao Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 qian, soil-stir-fried)
* Guangmuxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 0.5 qian)
* Baiziren (Biota Semen, 3 qian, whole grains)
* Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 0.5 qian)
Add seven peach leaves (Taoye) as a guide drug.
(Fangjie [Formula Analysis] deleted)
Buqi Shengyang Method (Qi-Nourishing Yang-Raising Method): Treats malaria in Qi deficiency patients, characterized by chills/fever, profuse sweating, fatigue, and reduced appetite.
* Xi Lushen (Codonopsis Radix, 3 qian, rice-stir-fried)
* Shang Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 2 qian, honey-roasted)
* Yuqian Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 qian, rice-stir-fried)
* Fen Gancao (Licorice Root Powder, 0.5 qian, roasted)
* Guang Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1.5 qian)
* Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Body, 2 qian, wine-stir-fried)
* Lv Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 0.5 qian)
* Chaihu Shao (Bupleuri Radix Tip, 0.5 qian)
Add two slices of Shengjiang and three Jujubae Fructus as a guide drug.
This is Li Dongyuan’s Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). First, Renshen, Huangqi, Baizhu, and Gancao tonify Qi; Chenpi moves Qi to prevent stagnation from tonification, ensuring the tonification remains dynamic. Danggui activates Blood; when Qi and Blood circulate, pathogens cannot reside. Shengma and Chaihu lift the malaria pathogen; Shengjiang and Jujubae Fructus harmonize Ying and Wei. This formula is most appropriate for treating deficiency malaria.
Yingwei Shuangtiao Method (Dual-Harmonizing Ying and Wei Method): Treats aversion to cold and feeling hot, with a soggy and weak pulse; suitable for both deficiency malaria and labor-induced malaria.
* Neng Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus Tender Branch, 1 qian)
* Huangqi Pi (Astragali Cortex, 2 qian, honey-roasted)
* Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Body, 1.5 qian, soil-stir-fried)
* Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 qian, soil-stir-fried)
* Xi Lushen (Codonopsis Radix, 3 qian)
* Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian, roasted)
Add two slices of Shengjiang and three Jujubae Fructus, decoct and take orally.
The ancients said: The Stomach is the source of Wei (Defensive) Qi, and the Spleen is the root of Ying (Nutrient) Qi. Now, if chronic Spleen-Stomach deficiency causes chills and fever, dual-harmonization of Ying and Wei is appropriate. Therefore, Guizhi and Huangqi protect the exterior, Danggui and Baishao nourish Ying, Renshen and Gancao tonify the Stomach and Spleen, and Shengjiang and Jujubae Fructus harmonize Ying and Wei. This formula is derived from the root and source; do not simply administer harmonizing agents upon seeing chills and fever.
Tiaozhong Changqi Method (Regulating Middle Promoting-Qi Method): (No specific formula listed in text)
Shuangjia Souxie Method (Dual-Shells Searching-Pathogen Method): Treats tertian malaria (every-third-day malaria) that persists chronically.
* Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama, 1 qian, vinegar-roasted)
* Biejia (Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum, 1.5 qian, roasted)
* Muzeicao (Equiseti Herba, 1 qian, joints removed)
* Neng Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus Tender Branch, 1 qian)
* Zhi Shouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Preparata, 3 qian)
* Lujiaoshuang (Cervi Cornus Degelatinatum, 2 qian)
* Dongyang Renshen (Panax Ginseng, 2 qian)
* Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Body, 2 qian, soil-stir-fried)
First decoction: light boil. Second decoction: strong boil.
When malaria pathogens penetrate deeply to form tertian malaria, this method is required. Chuanshanjia is adept at burrowing and searches for deeply entrenched malaria pathogens. Biejia is a creeping creature and best searches for pathogens in Yin collaterals. Muzeicao is hollow and light; Guizhi is thin in aroma and ascending. Used together, they not only disperse pathogens deep in the Yin aspect but also return them to the Yang exterior. He Shouwu nourishes Yin, Lu Jiaoshuang assists Yang, Renshen benefits Qi, and Danggui tonifies Blood. When Yin, Yang, Qi, and Blood are all restored, the malaria pathogen has nowhere to reside.
Qingxuan Wenhua Method (Clear-Ventilate Warm-Transform Method): Treats late-onset latent summerheat in autumn, and also treats early-stage Wet-Warmth (Shiwēn).
* Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum, 3 qian, heart removed)
* Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 2 qian, skin and tips removed, crushed)
* Gualouqiao (Trichosanthis Pericarpium, 3 qian)
* Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1.5 qian)
* Fuling (Poria, 3 qian)
* Zhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparata, 1 qian)
* Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian)
* Peilan Ye (Eupatorii Herba, 1 qian)
Add 2 qian of Heye (Nelumbinis Folium) as a guide drug.
Lianqiao is cold but not stagnant, utilizing its clearing and venting properties; Xingren is warm but not drying, utilizing its warming and transforming properties. Gualouqiao vents Qi in the upper burner, Chenpi transforms Qi in the middle burner. With the upper and middle Qi mechanisms vented and transformed, new coolness and latent pathogens cannot remain. Fuling, Banxia, and Gancao eliminate latent summerheat internally; Peilan and Heye resolve new pathogens externally.
