Shizhuo (Filth and Turbidity) disease, commonly known as "Wochuo" (Filth), frequently occurs between summer and autumn. This condition arises primarily from the downward pressure of heavenly heat and the upward rising of earthly dampness, where summer-heat and dampness mutually steam and ferment, compounded by filth-turbid qi mixing internally. When humans contract this pathogen, it enters through the mouth and nose and directly attacks the Membrane Source (Moyuan, a location halfway between the exterior and interior). Initially, there is headache with distension, chest and epigastric stuffiness and oppression, skin fever with sweating, frequent nausea, and a sluggish, dull pulse on the right side. However, distinctions must be made between those biased toward summer-heat and those biased toward dampness. If biased toward summer-heat, the tongue coating is yellow, with thirst and mental restlessness, termed Shuhui (Summer-Heat Filth). If biased toward dampness, the tongue coating is white and greasy, without thirst, termed Shihui (Dampness Filth). Both are suitable for treatment with Aromatic Methods to Transform Turbidity. For Shuhui, add Huashi (Talcum) and Gancao (Licorice); for Shihui, add Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) and Maocangzhu (Atractylodes lancea and Atractylodes macrocephala). In our region of Quzhou, upon seeing Shizhuo conditions, medication is often prohibited in favor of scraping therapies first. This reflects a misunderstanding: one should prohibit cloying, stagnant herbs such as Dihuang (Rehmannia), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), and Shashen (Glehnia), but aromatic herbs entering the Qi aspect pose no harm. Clinging to the prohibition of medicine often results in mild cases becoming severe, and severe cases becoming critical, causing countless deaths. How tragic!
Zhuxia (Stagnant Summer) disease occurs every year at the transition between spring and summer. As days lengthen and warmth suddenly increases, sudden vertigo, headache, body fatigue, and leg weakness appear, accompanied by low-grade fever, poor appetite, frequent yawning, mental restlessness, and spontaneous sweating. This is due to the third month belonging to Chen Earth, the fourth to Si Fire, and the fifth to Wu Fire, a period when Fire and Earth are flourishing, leading inevitably to the decline of Metal and Water. When Metal declines, it fails to control Wood; Wood agitation generates internal Wind, causing vertigo and headache. Since Metal is the child of Earth, deficiency in the child drains the mother (Earth), leaving the Spleen spirit exhausted, resulting in body fatigue, weak legs, fever, and poor appetite. Furthermore, Water deficiency fails to ascend and nourish the Heart, causing frequent yawning, mental restlessness, and spontaneous sweating. These are all caused by seasonal Fire pathogens, not typical Spring-Summer Warm diseases. If neglected and allowed to spread, they will inevitably become the root of consumptive weakness. Treatment should employ the Metal-Water Mutual Generation method. For severe vertigo, add Juhua (Chrysanthemum) and Sangye (Mulberry Leaf); for severe headache, add Peilan (Eupatorium) and Heqian (Lotus leaf); for fatigue and fever, add Ludangshen (Codonopsis) and Chuanhuye (Dendrobium); for mental restlessness and excessive sweating, add Fumai (Floating Wheat) and Lianzi (Lotus seed). With appropriate modifications, efficacy is achieved more rapidly.
