On the 28th day of the second month in the 19th year of the Zhen Guan era of the Great Tang, Sun Simiao, the True Person (Zhenren) of Jixian Cave on Sumen Mountain, Cui Village, Tangyin County, Xiangzhou, submitted this memorial. It has extraordinary efficacy; when used by physicians, it is very effective.
I ask: among all things in the world, nothing is more precious than human beings; among humans, nothing is more precious than the eyes. The eyes gather the essence of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs and are the treasures of the body. They can observe all things and shine infinitely. Bright as pearls, they encompass heaven and earth, connect internally with the Liver and Gallbladder, and correspond externally to the Six Channels (Taiyang, Yangming, Shaoyang, Taiyin, Shaoyin, Jueyin). Although the eyes belong to orifices, their root lies in the Kidney rather than being directly governed by it. The Kidney belongs to Ren-Gui Water in the North, and the Heart belongs to Bing-Ding Fire in the South. If the Heart and Kidney are not at peace, Water and Fire will clash and overcome each other, causing Qi and Blood to stagnate and flow poorly. This damages the Gallbladder and weakens the Liver, leading to eye diseases.
In treatment, one must first tonify the Kidney, then regulate the Liver. The Liver is the "sprout" (external manifestation) of the Kidney, and the Kidney is the master of the Liver. Regulating the Liver stabilizes the Hun (Ethereal Soul); tonifying the Kidney ensures the smooth flow of Jing (Essence) and Po (Corporeal Soul). Once Hun and Po are harmonious, the eyes naturally become clear. This is like planting fruit trees: only by cultivating the roots can branches and leaves flourish; if the roots are damaged, how can the seedlings stand? The Black Wheel (cornea and iris) belongs to the Kidney; Kidney deficiency causes headache. The tear ducts connect to the Liver; Liver Wind causes constant cold tears. The White Wheel (sclera) belongs to the Lung; Lung Heat causes red vessels to penetrate the eyeball. The upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen; Spleen Wind causes inverted eyelashes (trichiasis). The inner and outer canthi belong to the Heart; Heart Heat causes pterygium (fleshy growth over the cornea).
The eyes are divided into Five Wheels, which internally correspond to the Five Zang organs: Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney. These also correspond to the Five Elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. The Five Wheels are: Qi Wheel, Wind Wheel, Flesh Wheel, Water Wheel, and Blood Wheel. Do not believe ignorant physicians who recklessly perform hook-and-cut surgeries. You must carefully seek out formulas and theories and meticulously study medicinal materials. People often enjoy taking elixirs, or strain their spirit with mental anguish at night, or suffer heat in the Gallbladder, or catch cold in the Lungs, or consume pungent Five Spices (garlic, chives, leeks, onions, shallots), toxic fish, and vegetables. They may indulge in lust and sexual desire. They might allow the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Grief, Fear, Fright) to go to extremes, stare at stars or the sun, stay close to fire or smoke, engage in deep thinking without sleep, or worry incessantly about family affairs. This causes congestion and heat in the San Jiao (Triple Burner), leading to tearing in the wind, vision obscured as if by smoke, seeing snow-like shapes in the air, and viewing the sun as if underwater. All these are due to Kidney decline, nocturnal dreams of demonic intercourse, visual disturbances like floating black spots, and blurry vision. Such conditions are the root cause of eye damage. Over time, they develop into serious illnesses. Young people who do not understand the Dao indulge their desires, act impulsively after drinking, and lie down immediately after eating. In winter, they stay near fires; in summer, they seek excessive coolness. They sleep drunk in the wind without protection, indulge in lust, and cannot abandon physical pleasures. Even those who are wealthy and vigorous may suffer from excessive wine and sex, unaware of the calamity to their eyes. Due to Kidney Qi decline, they resort to praying to ghosts and gods, suffering physically and mentally, until the disease becomes established. Now, according to Bencao (Materia Medica), I prescribe this formula. This medicine nourishes the Kidney and calms the Spirit. With long-term use, it expels Wind and brightens the eyes, provides warmth, and eliminates pathogenic factors. If prepared according to the formula and taken regularly, it guarantees success in treating eye diseases. It is named Huanjing Wan (Restore Vision Pill), consisting of ten ingredients with different processing methods, specifically arranged in Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi (Monarch-Minister-Assistant-Courier) roles. As long as it is taken, recovery will occur soon. Not only men and women, young and old, can take it without harm; I have verified it personally. It is indeed a refined preparation, discerning high-quality materials. The backup formula follows below. May Your Majesty forever bestow prosperous and profound sacred virtue. Your subject is overwhelmed with reverence.
