Regardless of whether it is a Yin syndrome (Yin Zheng, a pattern characterized by deficiency and cold) or a Yang syndrome (Yang Zheng, a pattern characterized by excess and heat), taking this formula immediately upon the initial onset of symptoms is highly effective. This is the prescription of Zhao Congjian.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water overnight, dried over low heat, weighed: 1 liang) Dajingpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma: 0.5 liang, sliced) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma: 2.5 qian, honey-fried).
The above ingredients are chopped. For each dose, take 5 da qian, add 3 cun of scallion white (Congbai, Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), and 1.5 zhan of water. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 zhan, strain, and take hot. Recovery occurs with slight sweating.
To treat Shanghan (Cold Damage), regardless of Yin/Yang or Exterior/Interior patterns, it can be taken within three days of onset. This is the prescription of Wang Shuxian.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma: 4 liang) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens: 2 jin, sliced into pieces) Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma: 1 jin, sliced; removing the skin is preferable).
Mix the above three herbs thoroughly, cover, and let stand overnight. The next day, dry them over low heat, grind into coarse powder. For each dose, take 0.5 liang, add 2-3 cun of scallion white, and 1.5 bowls of water. Decoct until reduced to 0.8 bowl, strain, and take hot. Take at any time. If there is headache, add Xiangbaizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix); if there is abdominal pain, add Xiangfuzi (Cyperi Rhizoma). Recovery occurs with sweating.
To treat Erdu (Two Poisons: Yin Poison and Yang Poison) caused by Shanghan, or due to premature purgation leading to Wangyang (Collapse of Yang Qi), or causing pathogenic factors to knot and stagnate in the chest and diaphragm, resulting in Jueleng (Cold extremities), absent pulse, or spleen injury from cold substances causing pain radiating around the umbilicus, ingestion of raw/hard food leading to fullness and obstruction in the middle jiao, tidal fever, Fanwei (Regurgitation/vomiting), Yue-ni (Hiccups), Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder with vomiting and diarrhea), Xiaochangpi (Intestinal hernia/pain), and Qi-tong in the hypochondrium. It treats all cases where Yin and Yang are disharmonious and malignant Shanghan patterns occur. Take one pill per dose. Place in charcoal fire until red-hot, remove after a while, let cool, grind finely into powder. Mix with 1 zhan of rice drink, decoct until reduced to 0.7 zhan, take warm. Take at any time. After half an hour (ban shichen), administer another dose for excellent effect. It also treats inverted/repressed childhood exanthems (Chuangzhen). Follow the method and take half a pill for recovery.
Jinxingshi (Venus Stone) Yinxingshi (Silver Star Stone) Daizheshi (Haematitum) Taiyin Xuanjingshi (Taiyin Black Crystal Stone) Yunmushi (Muscovite/Mica, white sheet-like ones) Yuyuliangshi (Limonitum) Guifu Huashi (Talcum from Guifu region).
(Above stones are placed together in an earthenware jar, calcined in charcoal fire using half a sheng of charcoal until weight is halved, removed, cooled, and ground into fine powder. Form pills with glutinous rice porridge, size of a bullet. Dry them. Administer according to the previous method. Hanshui Shi (Calcitum) is called Ruan Shigao (Soft Gypsum Fibrosum) in the South. Another variant adds 1 liang of Maifanshi.)
