The Kidney is the organ that stores essence. There are fifty-four acupoints on both sides of its back (plus twenty-three single points, totaling seventy-seven points), as recorded in the *Jia Yi Jing* (Classics of Acupuncture and Moxibustion).
The Qi of the Kidney meridian emerges from Yongquan (KI 1, Springing Fountain). Yongquan belongs to Water (also known as Dizhong, located in the depression at the center of the sole; when the foot is flexed and toes curled, it lies in the hollow; it is the point where the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian Qi emerges, classified as a Jing-Well point; moxibustion is suitable during the three months of winter). The Qi flows to RanGu (KI 2, Valley of the Dragon). RanGu belongs to Fire (also known as Longyuan, located in the depression anterior to the medial malleolus below the prominent bone; it is where the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian Qi lingers, classified as a Ying-Spring point; moxibustion is suitable during the three months of spring). The Qi pours into Taixi (KI 3, Great Stream). Taixi belongs to Earth (located in the depression behind the medial malleolus where the posterior tibial artery beats; it is where the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian Qi pours, classified as a Shu-Stream point; moxibustion is suitable during the three months of summer). The Qi travels to Fuliu (KI 7, Returning Flow). Fuliu belongs to Metal (also known as Fubai or Changyang, located in the depression two cun above the medial malleolus; it is where the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian Qi travels, classified as a Jing-River point).
