If a pregnant woman is emaciated and weak, or complicated by disease, leading to deficiency and damage of the Zang-Fu organs and exhaustion of Qi and Blood, since she cannot nourish the fetus, causing fetal movement instability and insecurity, ultimately failing to secure the pregnancy, abortion (induced expulsion of the fetus) may be performed to prevent harm to the mother. If a pregnant woman is infected with pathogenic factors from warm epidemics or Cold Damage (Shanghan), which enter the uterus and Zang-Fu organs, causing fetal death, if the area where fetal movement was previously felt feels cold, indicating fetal death, abortion may be performed.
Formulas
Cuisheng Tang (Induction Decoction, from *San Yin Fang*): Treats difficult labor due to sparse uterine contractions, lasting two to three days without delivery, or intrauterine fetal demise, or maternal Qi deficiency with extreme fatigue, and dryness/astringency of the birth canal. It can be administered as soon as contractions begin and membranes rupture.
