When delivery occurs before the gestational months are complete and the fetal qi (vital energy) is not fully formed, it is called Ban Chan (Half Delivery). This is generally due to the deficiency of Qi in the Chong and Ren meridians in the pregnant woman, which fails to nourish the fetus, leading to unstable fetal qi. Alternatively, it may result from external trauma such as bumps, sprains, or falls, causing damage and agitation to the Qi and Blood. It can also be caused by febrile diseases or warm malaria. Zhang Zhongjing stated: "Cold pathogen and deficiency interact," which is named Ban Chan. He further said that Ban Chan is commonly referred to as Xiao Chan (Small Delivery) in folk terms; whether it occurs at three or four months or five or six months, it is all considered Ban Chan because the male or female fetus has already taken shape. Additionally, it may be caused by worry, fear, sudden rage, excessive grief, overexertion, physical injury from blows, or exposure to summer heat. One must strictly avoid using Hei Shen San (Black Divine Powder), as it contains hot-natured herbs, which might induce other illnesses. Instead, formulas such as Yu Zhu San (Jade Candle Powder) and He Jing Tang (Harmonizing Meridian Decoction) should be used. *Bian Chan Xu Zhi* (Necessary Knowledge for Childbirth) states: "Small delivery must not be underestimated; convalescence should be ten times more intensive than normal delivery." It further states: "After half delivery, muscle tissue may rot; one must tonify the deficiency, promote muscle growth, replenish Qi and Blood, dispel wind pathogens, and nourish the Zang organs. Convalescence exceeding that of normal delivery by tenfold will ensure recovery without exception. This point requires careful consideration."
Formulas
An Gong San (Palace-Anchoring Powder): Treats small delivery occurring within less than a month of pregnancy; calms the fetus with miraculous effect.

Crush the above herbs into powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 3 cun of Ramie Root, and 1.5 sheng of water; decoct.
Bu Zhong Tang (Tonify the Middle Decoction): Nourishes new blood, removes stasis, tonifies deficiency, and supports critical conditions. Treats half delivery occurring before the full month.
Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, prepared), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin, cut and stir-fried with clam powder), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, each 1 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, stir-fried with yellow earth), Huangqi (Astragalus Root, de-rhizomed and honey-fried), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, each 0.5 liang). Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water; decoct and take orally, regardless of timing.
Sheng Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats damage and agitation of fetal qi during pregnancy, irregular Qi and Blood, or abortion caused by bumps, sprains, or falls, known as Ban Chan. Also treats postpartum disharmony of Qi and Blood, incomplete lochia discharge, and abdominal pain.

Chop the above herbs. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water and a piece of ginger the size of a jujube, crushed; decoct.
Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction): Treats excessive vaginal bleeding after half delivery, palpitations, body tremors, dizziness, vertigo, alternating chills and fever, and empty, distending, painful sensation in the umbilical and abdominal regions.

Mangxiao (Mirabilite), Puhuang (Tyrpha Pollen), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, peeled, avoiding fire), Guijianyu (Strychnos Nux-vomica Twig, each 0.5 liang), Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmannia Root, baked, 1 liang), Taoren (Peach Kernel, de-skin and de-pit, stir-fried, 0.5 liang). Chop the above herbs. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 sheng of water; decoct until 0.7 parts remain, strain, and take warm at any time. Another version includes Renshen but excludes Guijianyu, named Puhuang Tang.
Aiye Tang (Mugwort Leaf Decoction): Treats continuous lochia discharge after half delivery, chest oppression, and shortness of breath.

Chop the above herbs. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 sheng of water; decoct until 0.7 parts remain, strain, and take warm at any time.
Duoming Wan (Life-Seizing Pill) (from *Jianyi Fang*): Specifically treats women with small delivery, excessive vaginal bleeding, and retained dead fetus. Symptoms include aversion to cold, cyanosis of fingers, lips, mouth, and nail beds, sallow-dark complexion, or fetal Qi rushing to the heart causing suffocation and near-death experience, spontaneous cold sweat, panting, inability to eat, ingestion of toxic substances, or accidental consumption of herbal medicines damaging fetal Qi with continuous bleeding while the fetus remains intact. Taking this pill can calm the fetus; if the fetus is already dead, it aids expulsion.
Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark), Baifuling (Poria Cocos), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), Taoren (Peach Kernel, processed), Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root, equal parts). Grind into fine powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, and swallow with light vinegar water. For urgent cases, quickly take two pills until the fetus rots; if the abdomen is critically dangerous, it can be removed immediately.
Lingyangjiao Yin (Antelope Horn Drink): Treats mental restlessness and fatigue after half delivery.
Lingyangjiao Xie (Antelope Horn Shavings, 0.5 liang), Shaoyao (Peony Root, 1 liang), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, de-pithed and bran-roasted, 3 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 liang), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, de-heart and baked, 0.5 liang). Xiangchi Tang (Fermented Soybean Decoction) (from *Qianjin Fang*): Treats incomplete vaginal bleeding after half delivery, severe alternating irritability and fullness nearing death.
Use 1.5 sheng of Xiangchi (Prepared Fermented Soybean), add 3 sheng of water, boil three times, strain, add 1 fangcunbi (square-inch scoop) of Lujiao Mo (Deer Antler Powder), and take in one dose. Blood will naturally descend shortly thereafter.
Treatment for continuous dripping lochia after small delivery lasting nearly a month, unresponsive to various treatments (from *Bian Chan Xu Zhi*).
Stir-fry Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung) until slightly scorched, grind into powder, bind with rice paste to form pills the size of tung seeds. Swallow 30–40 pills with millet drink. Efficacy is immediate. Another method uses wine for administration.
Quansheng Huoxue Tang (Complete Life Blood-Invigorating Decoction) (from *Lanshi Micang*): Treats women experiencing fainting, loss of consciousness, closed eyes, and lack of sensation after delivery or half delivery with spotting.
This occurs because blood suddenly drains away; when tangible blood leaves, the Shen (Spirit) loses nourishment. The Heart and Bao Luo (Uterine Collaterals) belong to Ministerial Fire and Sovereign Fire; they are peaceful with blood and endangered without it. Excessive fire causes fainting. If fire attacks the Lung, it leads to closed eyes and unconsciousness. This is sudden loss of Yin Blood failing to anchor Yang, resulting in blood deficiency. Often, physicians use Shi (Talcum), Gancao (Licorice), and Shigao (Gypsum), which are acrid-sweet and overly cold herbs that drain Qi-heat. This constitutes draining Qi alongside Blood deficiency, i.e., draining Yang alongside Yin deficiency, injuring both and creating deficiency-wasting disease. Fainting is due to Heat in the Upper Jiao (Heart and Lungs). This is formless Heat. Using cold herbs to force it downward ignores that Upper Jiao diseases belong to the Exterior and are Yin patterns, cured by sweating. Purging instead risks death from sudden Qi-Blood depletion. As stated in *Neijing*: When pathogenic Qi is deficient, tonification is preferred over purgation. Closed-eye diseases belong to Yin, favoring sweating over purgation. In Shanghan (Cold Damage) Yu Mao (Depression and Vertigo), sweating brings cure. Thus, cold herbs are prohibited. Delivery and half delivery do not inherently damage Yuan Qi; only sudden blood loss occurs. Lost blood must be replenished. Tonifying blood restores Shen. Normally, blood descends and is lost; here, it must be tonified and lifted. The Heart receives blood to nourish Shen, preventing dullness. Sudden blood descent mimics Autumn/Winter dominance; lifting it assists Yang, opening eyes and clearing Shen. This formula tonifies, nourishes, generates blood, and benefits Yang to address insufficiency in the Hand and Foot Jueyin meridians.
Manjingzi (Vitex Fruit, 5 fen), Gaoben (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome, 1.5 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, 2 qian), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root, 2 qian), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, 3 qian), Gegen (Pueraria Root, 2 qian), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root, 3 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 2 qian), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, de-seeded, 2 qian), Dangguishen (Angelica Sinensis Root Body, wine-washed, 2 qian), Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmannia Root, 1 qian, added in summer), Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 1 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong, 1.5 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, 2 qian; how do we know Yang Qi has sunk? Because blood has descended and escaped), Honghua (Carthamus Flower, 3 fen), Xixin (Asarum, 5 fen). Chop the above herbs. Take 5 qian per dose, add 2 sheng of water; decoct until 1 sheng remains, strain, and take slightly warm before meals.

Sangjisheng (Taxillus Branch), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Shihu (Dendrobium Stem), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Ganhudi Huang (Dry Rehmannia Root), Xuduan (Dipsacus Root), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root, each 0.5 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Zelan (Leonurus Herba), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Muxiang (Costus Root), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Xixin (Asarum), Guangui (Official Cinnamon, avoiding fire, each 1 liang). Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with salt on an empty stomach. Or, bind with refined honey into tung seed-sized pills, take 50 pills with salt water on an empty stomach; this is superior.
Treatment for excessive bleeding after half delivery that cannot be stopped, sudden chest oppression, and unconsciousness (from *Huming Fang*).
Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, 3 qian), Shihu (Dendrobium Stem, de-head), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, each 0.5 liang), Xuduan (Dipsacus Root), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Muli (Oyster Shell, fired), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, de-bark and ginger-processed), Longgu (Fossilized Bone, Aiye Mugwort Leaf, Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root, each 1 qian). Grind into fine powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water; decoct until 1.3 sheng remains, add 2 jujubes, decoct together, strain, and take on an empty stomach. If bleeding is excessive, bind with honey into tung seed-sized pills, take 30 pills with salt-millet water on an empty stomach. Only take one or two doses. Do not consume the dregs. After several days of taking this medicine, bleeding stops. Long-term use tonifies deficiency and aids childbirth.
Treatment for retained dead fetus in the womb, failure of half delivery (from *Huming Fang*).
Guangui (Official Cinnamon, de-bark, 1 liang), Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark, de-heart), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Kuizi (Abutilon Seed). Grind into fine powder. Take 5 qian per dose, mix with strong green onion decoction.
Treatment for all women who have damaged righteous Qi after half delivery, failed to convalesce, suffer from continuous lochia for two to three months, have sallow and emaciated complexion, reduced appetite, weakness, and cold deficiency in the Zang-Fu organs (from *Huming Fang*).
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, 1 liang), Aiye (Mugwort Leaf), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong), Xixin (Asarum), Muxiang (Costus Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, each 1 liang), Muli (Oyster Shell, fired), Xuduan (Dipsacus Root), Shihu (Dendrobium Stem), Sangjisheng (Taxillus Branch, each 0.5 liang). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1 sheng of water; boil three times, strain, and take on an empty stomach.
Treatment for all women who, suddenly after half delivery or normal delivery, fail to convalesce properly, damaging Qi and Blood, suffering from excessive menstruation, bluish-yellow complexion, non-timed diarrhea and dysentery, reduced appetite, emaciation, abdominal Qi pain, heat stabbing the heart and hypochondrium, lower body weakness, erect ears, shrugging shoulders, altered eye color, approaching consumptive syndrome.
