The formation of the embryo relies on the nourishment and cultivation of Qi and Blood. If during pregnancy, Qi and Blood are vigorous, and Yin and Yang reach a state of ultimate harmony and blend within the body, as long as one conforms to the laws of time and carefully manages daily life without reckless movement or injury, the principles of reproduction are mastered. If the Chong and Ren meridians are deficient in Qi, and care is improper, with wind-cold invading the Zi Zang (uterus), failing to nourish the fetus, it often happens that upon conception, repeated injuries and miscarriages occur.
Yang provides the stimulus, Yin performs the transformation, thus allowing conception. When Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi are harmonious, and menstrual nourishment is sufficient, the fetus remains stable and can grow. If Qi and Blood are deficient and damaged, and the Zi Zang is troubled by wind-cold, then Blood becomes insufficient, unable to nourish the fetus, leading to frequent miscarriages. Pregnant women who suffer from lower back pain are prone to miscarriage. After a miscarriage, if the meridians are further damaged, and since the meridians are now deficient, vaginal bleeding may not stop. Excessive bleeding leads to irritability and restlessness, potentially resulting in death.
It is also said: Dai Ren passed through Dongqi and encountered a woman suffering from dry stool constipation and dribbling urination, having failed to conceive for half her life. She only took purgative/dredging medicines, which allowed smooth bowel movements; when she temporarily stopped the medicine, constipation returned. Suddenly, she conceived and reached four or five months. The doctor prohibited the use of dredging medicines, causing her bowels to be difficult as usual. Straining during defecation led to miscarriage. There were three such cases of miscarriage due to this cause. Another pregnant woman, already at three or four months, experienced painful and obstructed urination around the new and full moon days, fearing fetal loss greatly. She visited Dai Ren. Dai Ren examined her pulses at both wrists, finding them slippery and large. Although the pulses were slippery and large, because she was pregnant, he dared not attack aggressively. Instead, he treated her with dietary therapy: boiling safflower with spinach and Malva verticillata, using Plantago asiatica seedlings as vegetables, mixed with pig and sheep blood soup. Half a year later, she successfully gave birth. Her dryness condition had just healed. Dai Ren said, "I have frequently seen pregnant women suffering from pus and blood discharge, with extreme tenesmus damaging the fetus. I simply used the aforementioned method, and countless patients were cured. Doctors who stick to conventional taboos without flexibility are not true physicians. Unfortunately, few people in the world understand medicine, making this hard to explain."
