者。
It is said that cold exposure is the most taboo for heatstroke. Then why are Laifu Dan (Recovery Pill), Huanglong Wan (Yellow Dragon Pill) taken with garlic and water? This is because the medicinal properties of these drugs are warm, used for conditions triggered by cold pathogens. This aligns with Lu Zuchang's correction of errors. It is recorded that Li Zhaowen suffered from a thirst disease. Lu Zuchang diagnosed him and asked, "Did you contract this illness in the evening during the summer month?" Li replied, "Yes." Lu boiled Ginseng Decoction (Renshen Tang), waited for it to cool, and had the patient swallow Yuhu Wan (Jade Pot Pill), after which he recovered.
Longxu San (Dragon Whisker Powder), also known as Gancao San (Licorice Powder), treats exposure to summerheat and latent heat. Symptoms include dryness and oppression in the heart and diaphragm, excessive drinking, loss of consciousness, Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with diarrhea and thirst, epistaxis or hematemesis, hematuria, dizziness, and blurred vision.
Ingredients: Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis, one variant uses Wuweizi Schisandrae Fructus), Wumei (Mume Fructus, pitted, each 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1.5 liang), Feiluo Mian (Fine Wheat Flour, 2 liang; one prescription prefers flour made on Qingming Festival), Baijian (Alum, calcined, 1 liang; one prescription uses raw alum). Grind all into fine powder. Take 2 large qian per dose, mixed with fresh well water. One dose brings recovery. It also detoxifies various poisons. Even those who do not usually drink cold water find it remarkably effective. Another prescription adds Hezi Rou (Chebulae Fructus), drops water to form pills, called Longxian Wan (Dragon Saliva Pill), still taken with water. Zhai Gongxun, a Censor, renamed it Zhuore San (Washing Heat Powder), dried in shade, and taken with cold water.
Wuwu Xiangru Tang (Five-Ingredient Mosla Decoction) harmonizes Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi). It treats irregular diet, alternating hunger and fullness, excessive consumption of cold foods, stagnation of hard foods, sleeping immediately after meals, fright, worry, anger, or overexertion leading to Qi disturbance and desire to eat, causing Spleen and Stomach disharmony, obstruction in the upper, middle, and lower Jiao (Triple Burner), internal contraction of wind-cold, external contraction of cold pathogen, aversion to cold with high fever, generalized body pain, chest and diaphragmatic fullness, Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with vomiting, Spleen pain with regurgitation, drunkenness with unconsciousness, headache due to Cold Damage (Shanghan) in all seasons. Take three doses; sweating indicates recovery. Regular use benefits the Spleen and warms the Stomach, dissipates retained phlegm and fluids, promotes appetite, and protects against wind, cold, fog, and dew. It greatly dispels summerheat.
Ingredients: Xiangru (Moslae Herba, 3 liang), Bian Dou (Vigna Semen, processed with ginger), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, processed with ginger), Fuling (Poria, each 1.5 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 fen). Chop ingredients. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct in water, take warm. Adding salt is acceptable. Take at any time. One prescription uses Shen (Spina Date Seed).
Yuhu Wan (Jade Pot Pill) has the power to revive the dying from heatstroke.
Ingredients: Boshang Huhuang (Imported Realgar/Sulfur), Yanxiao (Niter), Huashi (Talcum), Baijian (Alum, each 1 liang). Grind into fine powder. Mix with 6 liang of premium white flour. Form pills using fresh well water, size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, swallowed with fresh well water. For severe oppression and confusion approaching death, mix with water and administer; immediate revival occurs. The effect is miraculous. Previously, Li Zhaowen, Pan Yuan He, and Cang Shu Xu all suffered from thirst diseases caused by summerheat and recovered with this pill. Its efficacy for thirst induced by summerheat is immeasurable.
Xiangru San (Mosla Powder) treats disharmony of cold and heat in the Zang-Fu organs, irregular diet, excessive consumption of fish, raw, or cold foods, irregular lifestyle, sleeping on damp ground outdoors, or cooling off in the wind, causing wind-cold Qi to gather in the Triple Burner and transmit to the Spleen and Stomach. The cold damages the Spleen and Stomach, preventing digestion of grains, leading to interference of various pathogens, weakness of the intestines and stomach, disorder of food within the gut, resulting in vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal pain, Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with rebellious Qi. Cases include heart pain preceded by vomiting, abdominal pain preceded by diarrhea, simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, fever with headache and body pain accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, and deficiency irritability, or only vomiting/diarrhea with stabbing abdominal pain, muscle cramps and spasms, vomiting without expulsion, cold extremities with impending pulse disappearance, or severe oppression and coma approaching death. This medicine treats all such conditions.
Ingredients: Xiangru (Moslae Herba, cleaned, 4 liang), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, bark removed, chopped, stir-fried with ginger juice until yellow), Bian Dou (Vigna Semen, each 2 liang). Chop into pieces. Take 5 qian per dose, with 1 cup of water and 1 part wine, decoct to 7 parts, remove dregs. Cool in water. Take two doses consecutively for immediate effect. Take at any time. One prescription adds Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma). Treats heatstroke complicated by wind, convulsions, unconsciousness, and chest/heart irritability. Decoct clearly and take cold according to the base formula. For summer damp diarrhea, add Wumei (Mume Fructus) and Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 qian), and a pinch of aged rice. For summer deficiency with abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, add Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Paofuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix), and Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus, half qian each), and 5 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). Also called Liuhe Tang (Six-Harmony Decoction). For summerheat injury with only headache, add Shan Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) to the main formula; take more for effect. All above taken hot. Regular use dispels summerheat and strengthens the Spleen. Or grind to powder, make paste with honey, take with wine. One prescription omits Bian Dou.
Huanglian Xiangru San (Coptis and Mosla Powder) treats disharmony of Yin and Yang, interference of clear and turbid Qi, Qi attacking the Middle Jiao, named Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome). Caused by overeating fish and dairy, consuming diverse foods, drinking cold beverages, sleeping on cold mats, where wind-cold damages the Spleen and Stomach, food stagnates, Yin and Yang Qi become obstructed and fail to circulate, Yang Qi desires to descend, Yin Qi desires to ascend, Yin-Yang intermix causing incessant vomiting and diarrhea, chaos in meridians, deficiency of Ying and Wei, cold clamping the sinews. This is the appropriate indication.
Ingredients: Xiangru Sui (Moslae Spica, 1.5 liang), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, bark removed), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, each 2 liang, chopped with 4 liang Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), ground together, stir-fried until purple). Coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, 1 cup water, 0.5 cup wine, slow fire in silver/ceramic vessel to 7 parts, remove dregs. Soak repeatedly in fresh well water until very cold, take in one dose. Cold yields faster effect. Also for non-seasonal vomiting/diarrhea, Huoluan with colicky abdominal pain, extreme thirst and irritability, cold extremities, spontaneous cold sweat, unbearable leg cramps. Soak in well water, take in one dose for extreme efficacy.
Xiaoshu Wan (Summerheat-Dispelling Pill), also known as Xiaodu Wan (Toxin-Dispersing Pill) or Huanglong Wan (Yellow Dragon Pill), treats summerheat injury with fever and headache, Spleen-Stomach disharmony, irritability, thirst, dizziness, and alternating chills and fever.
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, boiled in 5 sheng vinegar until dry), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Fuling (Poria, peeled, each 0.5 jin). Grind to powder. Use Shengjiang juice (Zingiberis Rhizoma) to make a thin paste for pills, size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with water. When preparing, boil Banxia in good vinegar, use ginger juice for paste, avoid raw water. Preparation must be precise for divine efficacy. For heatstroke, consciousness returns upon ingestion. Especially effective for summerheat fever and headache. Summer regular use stops thirst and promotes urination; excessive water intake is harmless. No summerheat remedy surpasses this. For retained phlegm-fluids, take with Ginger Decoction. Essential after entering summer. Chew finely for best results. Superior to Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) because Wuling San contains Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), and Chifuling (Red Poria) which drain Kidney channel; not suitable for those with eye diseases. Not suitable in late autumn. One prescription uses honey for pills. For Spleen deficiency with summerheat, vomiting and anorexia, take Ju Fang Pipaye San (Bureau Formula Leaf Loquat Powder) raw material decoction, swallow 60-70 Xiaoshu Pills for immediate effect. For excessive cold/raw food intake causing chest oppression, vomiting clear fluid, or dry retching, take Xiao Wuchen Tang (Small Black Stillness Decoction) mixed with Ginger-Salt Water; swallowing brings cure. Jianghu rumors describe Xiaoshu Wan made with vinegar-boiled Banxia, wine-boiled Huanglian (each half), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, clean stir-fried), Fuling (each 4 liang) formed into pills, taken freely. Effective for Zang-Fu disharmony.
Dixian San (Immortal Earth Powder) treats latent summerheat after Cold Damage, restlessness with fever, and deficiency exhaustion with fever.
Ingredients: Digupi (Lycii Cortex, wood removed, 2 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, awn removed, 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 0.5 liang). Chop. Take 3 qian per dose, 1.5 cups water, 5 slices Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), decoct. Take warm at any time.
Guiling Ganlu Yin (Cinnamon and Poria Sweet Dew Drink), also known as Guiling Baizhu San (Cinnamon, Poria, and Atractylodes Powder, from *Xuanming Lun*), treats Cold Damage, heatstroke, wind exposure, and cold drinks, internal and external injuries, severe internal damp-heat transmission, headache, dry mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, thirst, difficult urination, painful urgent defecation, damp-heat Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal fullness and pain, and pediatric vomiting, diarrhea, and convulsions. Suitable for all.
Ingredients: Fuling (Poria, peeled), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, each 1 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Hanshuishi (Calcitum), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, each 2 liang), Huashi (Talcum, 4 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, peeled), Zhuling (Polyporus, each 0.5 liang). Grind to fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with warm water. Fresh water is also acceptable. Ginger Decoction is best. For children, use Zhuling (Polyporus). Take three times daily, at any time.
Guiling Wan (Cinnamon and Poria Pill, from *Heji Fang*) greatly resolves summerheat toxicity, irritability, and thirst, excessive drinking, abdominal distension and fullness, scanty red urine.
Ingredients: Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, outer bark removed, avoid fire), Fuling (Poria, peeled, equal parts). Grind to powder. Make pills with refined honey. Each liang makes 8 pills. Take 1 pill per dose, chew and dissolve in fresh well water or cooked water.
Treating Heatstroke Regardless of Age (also known as Heisanzi Black Powder, from *Wei Shi Fang*)
Take high-quality Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Zaojia), scrape out black skin, burn until smoke nearly ceases. Cover with a basin on the ground, seal edges with soil to prevent smoke leakage. For every 1 liang of Gleditsia ash, use 6 qian of Gancao powder (Licorice Root). Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with fresh well water. For Qi deficiency, use warm grain water. For coma and unconsciousness, no more than two doses. Wu Neihan's Emergency Formula uses 5 jin of Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (skin and strings removed), roasted until charred but retaining nature, and 5 liang of Gancao. This is because summerheat patients have phlegm blocking orifices, and Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit can disperse and resolve phlegm. One prescription uses rice drink.
Qingshu San (Clear Summerheat Powder, from *Yang Shi Jiacang Fang*) treats latent summerheat damaging heat, dryness-thirst, oppression, belching, nausea, or Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome).
Ingredients: Huhuang (Realgar/Sulfur, 2 liang), Ge Fen (Clam Powder, 4 liang). Grind together evenly. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with fresh well water. Take at any time.
Excellent for Treating Heatstroke (from *Chuanxin Shi Yong Fang*)
Use high-quality sifted fine wheat flour, mix with Shengjiang juice (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and water to form cakes, dry in sun, then grind to powder and store. Take 2-3 qian per dose, mixed with fresh well water.
Treating Summer Heatstroke Due to Hunger and Extreme Heat, Fainting and Coma (from *Chuanxin Shi Yong Fang*)

Grind Wulingzhi and two Citrus peels to fine powder. Add Xuanjing powder, then Sulfur and Niter powders. Mix well, make paste with good vinegar, form pills size of pea. Take 50 pills per dose on empty stomach with rice drink. Or take with Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder), or mix with water and administer. This medicine can be taken cold or hot. Treatment method is similar to Yangzheng Dan (Nourishing Righteousness Pill) and Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill), but lighter and cannot suppress firmly. Since Niter is cold, assisted by Citrus peel for dispersing and moving properties, and Sulfur benefits people, using it as a warming medicine to stop diarrhea is a mistake. However, Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) involves alternating vomiting and diarrhea, caused by eating cold/raw foods or contracting summerheat Qi, closing the Middle Jiao, causing chaotic disruption. This medicine unblocks the Triple Burner, differentiates Yin and Yang, and is most effective. Also treats regurgitation and vomiting with notable effect. Most appropriate for heatstroke confusion. Effective for pediatric convulsions. These symptoms are caused by phlegm-fluids blocking the Middle Jiao. This medicine is warm and draining; once phlegm-fluids are removed, all symptoms disappear. If men or women have heart-abdominal pain relieved by draining agents, do not rush to tonify. Take medicine slowly to keep bowels regular so pain does not recur. Same logic for vomiting. Must know this. Also suitable for Kidney-Jue headache. Main treatment for elderly cold constipation. One method for elderly and deficient persons with cold Qi entering abdomen causing urinary/fecal retention: use 0.5 liang Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) with roots/leaves, mud-scented Scallion Stem (Allii Fistulosi Caulis), pinch of salt, 50 fermented Soybeans (Sojae Semen Preparatum), mash and slightly fry, apply to umbilicus center. Prepare two doses, replace when needed. Stop when bowel movement resumes. Also a good method.
