Generally speaking, regarding wind-stroke and cold-injury, the patterns of the three Yang meridians and three Yin meridians differ in pulse diagnosis and symptoms. Wind-stroke affecting the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian presents with a floating pulse at the cun position and a weak pulse at the chi position; symptoms include fever and spontaneous sweating. This is because yang qi floating leads to heat excess, while yin qi deficiency leads to sweating.
As for wind-stroke diseases affecting other meridians, although symptoms vary, they are broadly categorized into Yin and Yang types, requiring careful differentiation. Severe cases are termed "stroke" (Zhong), while mild cases are termed "wind-injury" (Shang). The six foot meridians (three Yin and three Yang) undergo daily transmission, similar to cold-injury. However, later scholars often fail to understand the principles, leading to confusion. Wind pathogen damages the Yang aspect and disturbs the Defensive Qi (Wei Qi), causing spontaneous sweating; other meridians manifest symptoms according to their specific pathways.
Wind-stroke of the Taiyang meridian features a floating pulse at the Yang position and a weak pulse at the Yin position, with symptoms of aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, pain in the head and nape, body pain, and stiffness in the lower back and spine. This is because the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian passes through the inner shoulder, runs alongside the spine, and reaches the waist.
Wind-injury of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian presents with a floating, strong, long, and rapid pulse; symptoms include dryness, irritability, thirst, ability to eat, difficulty urinating, abdominal fullness, and slight asthma. This is because the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian flanks the nose, connects with the eyes, descends through the diaphragm, and enters the abdomen.
Wind-injury of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian presents with a floating pulse at the Yang position and a wiry pulse at the Yin position; symptoms include aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating, neck stiffness, and dry throat with thirst. This is because the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian originates at the outer canthus, ascends to the vertex, enters the supraclavicular fossa, descends through the chest, and pierces the diaphragm.
Wind-injury of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian presents with a wiry, large, and slow pulse; symptoms include spontaneous sweating, dry throat, chest fullness, abdominal pain, and naturally warm hands and feet. This is because the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian connects with the stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, flanks the throat, and connects to the root of the tongue.
Wind-injury of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian presents with a deep and wiry pulse; symptoms include spontaneous sweating, vexation, lower back pain radiating to the hypochondriac region, and vomiting of saliva and froth. This is because the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian pierces the spine, belongs to the Kidney, ascends through the Liver, and connects to the root of the tongue.
Wind-injury of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian presents with a faint and slow pulse at all three positions (cun, guan, chi); symptoms include aversion to wind, spontaneous sweating with fatigue, and painful joints. This is because the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian runs along the medial thigh, enters the pubic region, circles the genitalia, flanks the stomach, connects with the Gallbladder, and spreads over the hypochondriac region. These pulse and symptom patterns differ from typical wind-stroke, each having its own treatment method.
Regarding the six hand meridians (three Yin and three Yang), there is no direct disease named "wind-injury." Only the Lung, as the canopy, governs Qi movement and warms the skin and hair. If the body is exposed to cold or food/drink is cold, the Lung is injured. Symptoms of Lung wind-injury include spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, body pain, coughing with a heavy voice. If there is only clear nasal discharge and nasal sourness, it indicates heat in the Lung; if the discharge is turbid, the condition is heavier. Mild cases show abnormalities only at the Cun-kou (radial artery) pulse; cases accompanied by fever are suitable for Qianghuo Tang (Notopterygium Decoction); cases with sweating are suitable for Mahuang Xixin Tang (Ephedra and Asarum Decoction). Medications differ, so scholars must distinguish clearly.
