If taking mineral drugs (Ru Shi) leads to the formation of abscesses, fever, and an inability to lie flat, one may use Tianmendong Decoction (Tianmen Dong Jian) [from *Shengji Zonglu*]. This formula treats lung qi rebelling upward causing asthma and cough due to the activation of mineral drugs.
Ingredients: Shengdihuang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, expressed juice 4 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma, peeled and expressed juice 2 liang), Baimi (White honey, 2 liang), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, dehearted and expressed juice 2 liang), Niusu (Bovis Butter), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen, soaked in water, skin and tip removed, ground into powder).
Preparation and Administration: First, add Mahuang end (Ephedrae Herba powder) 3 qian to the pot, remove the foam. Then add the powders of the aforementioned five ingredients (5 qian total). Decoct until 4 qian of liquid remains. Filter out the dregs. Clarify and filter the liquid into a copper vessel. Simmer gently until it reduces to 3 zhan. Add Tianmendong juice and Shengdihuang juice, 2 he each. Continue simmering until it reduces to 2 zhan. Add Shengjiang juice 2 he. Further simmer until it reduces to 1 zhan. Finally, add Xingren paste, Niusu, and Baimi, 0.5 he each. Mix evenly. Store the ointment in a non-absorbent container. For each dose, take an amount roughly half the size of a chicken eggshell, hold it in the mouth to dissolve slowly, and swallow the saliva. Take 4-5 times daily.
