The human body possesses five Zang organs. Among them, the Spleen and Stomach are the fu organs responsible for receiving and transforming food and fluids. If the granaries of a state are full, there will be sufficient food and military supplies. Similarly, if the stomach has sufficient food, Ying (Nutrient) Qi and Wei (Defensive) Qi will not become reversed.
Dry mouth is a manifestation of Yang deficiency. When there is grain in the Middle Jiao (Spleen and Stomach), heat gradually arises in the Upper Jiao, leading to vomiting and hiccups. The classics state that excessive Yang leads to vomiting. It is also said that vomiting and hiccups originate from the Lower Jiao; this is the principle involved. Such methods can resolve phlegm nodules, unblock food and fluids, and fill the Stomach fu, thereby avoiding disaster. The meaning of "unblocking" and "filling" implies that one should not make the deficient more deficient or the excess more excess. Qibo stated: "Draining deficiency and tonifying excess causes the Shen (Spirit) to leave its residence." Moreover, mineral drugs (Shi Yao) possess fierce and aggressive properties. If taken in excess, or if lifestyle adjustments are inappropriate, combined with disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach where grains cannot be processed, the Qi will attack upwards, thus causing vomiting and reverse flow.
