Whenever mineral drugs (Shishi) induce blurred vision, redness, and pain in the eyes, it is due to the acrid nature of the minerals ascending while the body's healthy Qi is deficient, compounded by phlegm-heat accumulation in the diaphragm. The nature of mineral drugs tends toward the Kidney channel. If lifestyle management is improper and diet unregulated, wind pathogens may invade all five Zang organs. However, the onset varies in location (high or low) and depth. Thus, Kidney wind manifests as gouty arthritis (Hongjiaojiao); Liver wind causes tearing and dim vision; Lung wind results in nasal discharge, sneezing, and cough; Spleen wind leads to flaccid and heavy muscles; Heart wind causes mental restlessness and forgetfulness. If wind combines with heat, symptoms follow the affected organ: Liver wind with heat causes hypochondriac fullness and irritability, a preference for stillness; excessive heat causes blurred and dim vision. If further complicated by mineral drug qi, the eyes become red and painful, pterygium (Yurou) may grow, or swelling and rapid ulceration may occur. Treatment should employ purging methods according to severity. Otherwise, severe consequences ensue; preventive measures are essential.
