After contracting Shanghan (Cold Damage), loss of voice and inability to speak occur because wind-cold pathogens invade the epiglottis. The epiglottis is the gateway for sound production; when damaged by pathogenic factors, sudden aphonia results. The Lung governs voice and connects with Qi. The five Zang organs correspond to five tones, all relying on the free flow of Qi to manifest. If pathogens lodge in the Lung, causing disharmony of the Qi mechanism, speech may also become voiceless. Treatment should be prescribed according to the severity of the condition.
Regarding aphonia, a song states: "Aphonia presents with opisthotonos like a drawn bow; Huo huo disease (Huo huo disease) causes lip sores leading to muteness resembling deafness; Wind-warmth and blood confusion accompany tongue retraction; combined with heatstroke causing difficult speech." Speech is the expression of the Heart mind; the pathway of sound emerges from the throat, which is also governed by the Lung. Whether due to Wind, Phlegm, Blood stasis, or Heat, or evil-heat lodging in the Heart orifices, or stagnation in the throat, these cause aphonia or dysarthria with hoarse, obstructed voice.

Take a tiger-mouth width of Yuanhua Gen (Radix Genkwa), chop and dry. Have the patient sit on a mat inside a container, pound the Yuanhua root until it flies into the seven orifices. When tears flow and the mouth/nose feel prickling, do not stop until the root is exhausted. The illness will surely heal here.
