For cases where the pathogenic factor of Cold Damage (Shanghan) attacks the hands and feet, excessive heat leads to swelling. The qi of heat-toxin lodges in the zang-fu organs, with evil pathogens knotting internally and following the meridians outward to pour into the four limbs. Consequently, this causes irritability, heat, redness, swelling, and pain in the hands and feet. The *Pathogenesis* states that the qi of heat-toxin emerges from the zang-fu organs and attacks the hands and feet, resulting in heat, redness, swelling, and pain. The Jing-River points (Jing-River acupoints) of the five zang and six fu organs all emerge from the tips of the fingers and toes; thus, this toxin emerges from within and attacks the hands and feet.
