For those who wish for a son to be born auspiciously and healthily, on the day of intercourse, one should avoid Bing (丙) and Ding (丁) days (days in the Heavenly Stems associated with Fire), as well as the Shang (弦, first or last quarter moon), Wang (望, full moon), Shuo (朔, new moon), and Hui (晦, last day of the lunar month). One must also avoid severe weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain, dense fog, extreme cold, extreme heat, thunder, lightning, and earthquakes. When heaven and earth are dim, sunlight and moonlight are obscured, rainbows appear, or solar/lunar eclipses occur, conception at these times will not only harm the parents a hundredfold but may also result in children who are mute, deaf, blind, foolish, insane, crippled, short-lived, unfilial, and unkind. One should also avoid intercourse under moonlight or firelight, inside temples or Buddhist shrines, near wells, stoves, or toilets, and beside graves, corpses, or coffins; all these places are forbidden. If intercourse follows proper methods, virtuous, blessed, wise, and good spirits will descend into the womb, causing the parents' nature and behavior to become harmonious and compliant, their endeavors to succeed, the family fortune to prosper daily, and auspicious signs to gather. If improper methods are used, wicked, ignorant, and ill-fated spirits will enter the womb, causing the parents' nature to become fierce and dangerous, their endeavors to fail, the family fortune to decline daily, and disasters to occur repeatedly. Even if the child grows up, it may lead to the destruction of the family or state. The verification of fortune and misfortune is as immediate as an echo or shadow; this is an inevitable principle, how can one fail to reflect upon it?
Methods for Timing Conception for Men and Women (from *Xianchan Xu Zhi*)
Regarding conception by men and women, if intercourse occurs on the first, third, or fifth day after the woman's menstruation ends, and coincides with a day when the moon resides in a noble constellation, and ejaculation takes place at midnight during the time when vital energy arises, a son will be born. Such sons will likely be long-lived, virtuous, intelligent, and hold high rank. If ejaculation occurs on the second, fourth, or sixth day after menstruation ends, the pregnancy will result in a daughter. Conception beyond the sixth day will not result in a viable fetus. Encountering "Wang" (King) or "Xiang" (Minister) days is particularly auspicious.
Method for Calculating Wang and Xiang Days (from *Xianchan Xu Zhi*)
Spring corresponds to Jia (甲) and Yi (乙); Summer corresponds to Bing (丙) and Ding (丁); Autumn corresponds to Geng (庚) and Xin (辛); Winter corresponds to Ren (壬) and Gui (癸).
Method for Calculating Noble Constellation Days
First Lunar Month: 1st, 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 21st, 24th, 29th.
Second Lunar Month: 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 22nd, 27th.
Third Lunar Month: 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 17th, 20th, 25th.
Fourth Lunar Month: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 15th, 18th, 22nd, 28th.
Fifth Lunar Month: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th, 20th, 25th, 28th, 29th, 30th.
Sixth Lunar Month: 1st, 3rd, 10th, 13th, 18th, 23rd, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th.
Seventh Lunar Month: 1st, 11th, 16th, 21st, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th.
Eighth Lunar Month: 5th, 8th, 13th, 18th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th.
Ninth Lunar Month: 3rd, 6th, 11th, 16th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 24th.
Tenth Lunar Month: 1st, 4th, 9th, 14th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 29th.
Eleventh Lunar Month: 1st, 6th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 19th, 26th, 29th.
Twelfth Lunar Month: 4th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 17th, 24th, 27th.
If Spring matches with Jia Yin (甲寅) or Yi Mao (乙卯) days, Summer with Bing Wu (丙午) or Ding Si (丁巳) days, Autumn with Geng Shen (庚申) or Xin You (辛酉) days, and Winter with Ren Zi (壬子) or Gui Hai (癸亥) days, and these coincide with the aforementioned noble constellation days, it is especially excellent.
Taboos Before Pregnancy (from *Chanhou Jiufang*)
After initial conception, any drugs that hinder the fetus should not be taken. Failure to abstain from sexual activity can prevent successful conception.
In the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, excessive drinking and overeating, along with unregulated sexual activity, often cause the mother to suffer from lower back pain and abdominal pain, potentially damaging the fetus. One should not climb heights or lift heavy objects, as falling or jarring injuries may damage the fetus.
Ancients slept in separate beds each month of pregnancy. Abstinence from lust during this time ensures the child is born without impurity. Violating this results in the child being born with "impurity on the head," commonly called "Dai Bai Sheng" (born wearing white/impurity), and the child will inevitably suffer from fetal toxins.
Dietary Taboos During Pregnancy (from *Xianchan Xu Zhi*)
Consuming eggs, fresh or dried carp, may cause the child to have many sores. Consuming bean paste with huoxiang (Agastache rugosa) may cause miscarriage. Consuming rabbit meat may cause cleft lip in the child. Consuming dog meat may cause loss of voice in the child. Drinking alcohol or eating too much sparrow meat may cause the child to lack shame. Consuming mulberries or duck meat may cause breech presentation. Consuming donkey or horse meat may prolong the gestation period. Consuming fish roe may harm the infant. Consuming goat meat may make the child prone to illness. Consuming mule meat may cause difficult labor. Consuming chicken meat and glutinous rice may cause intestinal parasites in the child. Drinking raw water may cause fetal heat. Consuming too much cold water, rinsed malva vegetables, or raw fruits and vegetables may cause fetal cold. Defecating or urinating in unusual places may lead to premature birth and death of the child. These are major taboos.
Dietary Taboos and Daily Living Precautions
Excessive consumption of sheep liver may bring hardships to the child. Frog meat may cause muteness in the child. Crabs may cause transverse lie. Excessive ginger may cause skin sores and polydactyly in the child. Dried ginger, garlic, and chicken are toxic to the fetus and of no benefit. Sticky and hard-to-digest foods damage the fetus. Scaleless fish should not be eaten. Excessive consumption of loaches may lead to dystocia. Guzi (mushrooms/fungi) has high toxicity; excessive consumption may cause neonatal convulsions and early death. Do not take decoctions arbitrarily. Do not drink alcohol excessively. Lying down during delivery is particularly taboo. Do not perform acupuncture or moxibustion arbitrarily. Do not defecate or urinate in inappropriate places, as this may cause premature birth and kill the child. Do not lift heavy objects, climb heights, or venture into danger. Avoid sudden fright, which may cause epilepsy in the child. Practice self-composure. Do not sleep too much; walk regularly. If the body is deficient and Kidney Qi is insufficient, the child may suffer from craniotabes (open fontanelles). Warmtonic therapies are suitable. If Spleen and Stomach harmony is disrupted and Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are weak, the child will be emaciated. Construction activities at home or by neighbors may disturb the fetal Qi, damaging the child's form and life. Injury by knives damages the form; injury by mud blocks orifices; blows cause dark discoloration; impacts cause contractures. These verifications are as clear as turning a hand; one must strictly avoid them.
