How to know if a woman is pregnant? A pulse that is peaceful and weak is the method for nursing mothers. The Classics state: "When the Yin pulse beats vigorously, distinct from the Yang pulse, it is called having a child." This indicates harmonious Qi and Blood, where Yang applies and Yin transforms. If the pulse of the Hand Shaoyin (Heart Meridian) moves particularly strongly, she is pregnant. The Shaoyin belongs to the Heart, which governs Blood vessels. Additionally, the Kidney is named "Bao Men" (Door of the Womb) and "Zi Hu" (House of the Child). The Chi position corresponds to the Kidney pulse. If the Chi pulse feels unceasing when pressed, it is the sign of pregnancy. If the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions have equal floating and sinking depths, and feel unceasing when pressed, there is conception.
At the beginning of pregnancy, the Cun pulse is minute and small, with five breaths per respiration. By the third month, the Chi pulse becomes rapid.
In the fourth month of pregnancy, to determine the gender: a rapid pulse on the left indicates a male, and on the right indicates a female. If both hands show a rapid pulse, twins will be born. Another method: a deep and solid pulse on the left indicates a male, and a floating and large pulse on the right indicates a female. If both hands are deep and solid, two boys will be born; if both are floating and large, two girls will be born. If the Chi pulse is larger on the left, it is a boy; if larger on the right, it is a girl. If both are large, twins will be born. The "large" feeling resembles a solid pulse. Another method: a floating and large pulse in the Chi position of the left hand indicates a boy, while a deep and fine pulse in the Chi position of the right hand indicates a girl. If the pulse comes and then cuts off, menstruation is obstructed. Another method: if both Chi pulses are floating, two boys will be born; otherwise, a female fetus might appear as male. If both are deep, two girls will be born; otherwise, a male fetus might appear as female. Another method: obtaining a Taiyin pulse indicates a boy, and a Taiyang pulse indicates a girl. The Taiyin pulse is deep, and the Taiyang pulse is floating. Another test: have the pregnant woman face south and walk, then call her back. If she turns her head to the left, it is a boy; if to the right, it is a girl. Another observation: when she goes to the toilet, have her husband call her urgently from behind. Turning left indicates a boy, turning right indicates a girl. Also, if the husband has a nodule on his left breast, it is a boy; if on the right breast, it is a girl.
To know if labor is imminent: if the pregnancy pulse deviates from the regular channel and becomes floating, accompanied by abdominal pain radiating to the lower back and spine, labor is approaching. Deviation from the regular pulse alone is not a disease. Another method:
The principle of conceiving originates from the beginning of Heaven and Earth. "Tai Chu" refers to the beginning of Qi, and "Tai Shi" refers to the establishment of Form. Qi begins to form Shape, and Heaven and Earth interact, generating endlessly, manifesting all things. Thus it is said, "Great is the Primal Power of Qian, by which all things begin; Perfect is the Primal Power of Kun, by which all things grow." At the beginning of life, although Yang provides the upright energy, nourishment and fulfillment must be governed by Yin. As form changes, day by day and month by month, it is nothing but the succession of the Way of Kun. It is called "Ren" (pregnancy). Once Yang receives its origin, Yin nurtures it. "Ren Zi" is called "Ren," which is already True Yang, wrapped by Yin, called "Pei" (embryo). Not yet formed into an organ, like a clay mold, it is called "Tai" (fetus). Since it feeds on the mother, becoming mouth and belly. As for "Shen," it moves according to time; as for "Huai," it relies on the body. The virtue of Heaven, the Qi of Earth, and the highest harmony of Yin and Yang flow together in one body. Only by following the seasons and carefully managing human affairs, without reckless movement or injury, can the way of reproduction be achieved. Observing the movement of the four seasons, growth, flourishing, harvesting, and storing, alternately producing all things, with complete rituals, the Qi of Heaven and Earth never diminishes because Yin and Yang nourish each other to complement. Ignorant people do not understand this, but try to defy natural laws and mistakenly seek methods to prevent or induce conception, attributing life and death to the Five Elements and seeking nourishment from herbs. Using falsehood to overcome truth, and human effort to assist Heaven, even if they have children, many fail to nurture them during pregnancy, or raise them only to die young. Ancients discussed having children in old age: men should not exceed 8x8 (64 years), and women should not exceed 7x7 (49 years). Thus we know that Qi and Blood in humans have their limits, and how can they escape the definitive numbers of Yin and Yang?
*Da Quan Liang Fang* says: The Liver stores Blood, the Lung governs Qi. Blood is Ying (Nutritive), Qi is Wei (Defensive). Yin and Yang match without disparity; the two Zang organs harmonize similarly. If Blood is deficient and Qi is abundant, there will be no pregnancy; if Blood is abundant and Qi is deficient, there will be pregnancy. (The Liver stores Blood, belonging to Ying and Yin; the Lung governs Qi, belonging to Wei and Yang. Yin and Yang matching means husband and wife coupling, joining essence and spirit, thus having a child. If Blood is scant and Qi is strong, there is no pregnancy; if Blood is abundant and Qi is weak, there is pregnancy.)
Cun is minute, Guan is slippery, Chi carries rapidness; flowing smoothly like a sparrow's peck. The pulse of the child already shows form, yet months of pregnancy remain unnoticed. (Cun minute, Guan slippery, Chi carrying rapidness, and flowing smoothly like a sparrow's peck, all indicate meridians blocked, forming a fetus. The above pulses are all those of abundant Blood and deficient Qi, indicating pregnancy with visible signs.) Left rapid indicates male, right rapid indicates female; flowing smoothly, coming and going quickly. Both hands' Guan pulses are large and corresponding; form is already present, as previously explained. (Left hand rapid pulse indicates male fetus, right hand rapid pulse indicates female fetus. And when both pulses flow, slippery and connected, coming and going quickly, or when both Guan pulses are surging and large and corresponding, the fetus already has shape.) Left hand with "Zong" (Vertical) indicates two males. ("Zong" means Husband overcomes Wife, Water overcomes Fire, Metal overcomes Wood, i.e., Ghost-Thief pulse. Named Zong, appearing on the left hand, indicates two sons.) Right hand with "Heng" (Horizontal) indicates a pair of females. ("Heng" means Wife overcomes Husband, Fire overcomes Water, Wood overcomes Metal, i.e., Overcoming pulse. Named Heng, appearing on the right hand, indicates two daughters.) Left hand pulse "Ni" (Reverse) generates three males. ("Ni" means Child overcomes Mother, Water overcomes Metal, Fire overcomes Wood, i.e., Self-generated pulse. Named Ni, appearing on the left hand, indicates three sons.) Right hand pulse "Shun" (Smooth) returns three females. ("Shun" means Mother overcomes Child, Metal overcomes Water, Wood overcomes Fire, i.e., Generating-self pulse. Named Shun, appearing on the right hand, indicates three daughters.) Cun, Guan, and Chi positions all correspond; one male and one female, distinguishing forms and symptoms. (When Cun, Guan, and Chi pulses correspond in size, slowness/rapidity, it indicates a male and female fetus. Guan front is Yang, Guan back is Yin. Yin and Yang pulses correspond, hence one male and one female.) Sometimes the child dies while the mother lives, or the mother dies while the child survives. (These two sentences distinguish the survival of mother and child.) Flowing through the three positions smoothly, slippery and rapid intermixed, all vigorous. Yang excess and Yin deficiency make the pulse clear; fullness in the chest indicates rebellious Qi. (If Cun, Guan, and Chi positions flow smoothly, all vigorous and slippery-rapid, these are pulses of Yang excess and Yin deficiency, indicating the pregnant woman's Qi fills the chest and is not smooth.) Left hand Taiyang floating and large indicates male. (Left hand Cun Kou is Taiyang; if the pulse is floating and large, it is the pulse for a male fetus.) Right hand Taiyin deep and fine indicates female. (Right hand Cun Kou is Taiyin; if the pulse is deep and fine, it is the pulse for a female fetus.) All Yang pulses are male, all Yin pulses are female; clearly remember this under the fingers. (All Yang pulses, such as floating, large, rapid, slippery, and solid, indicate male fetuses. All Yin pulses, such as fine, deep, weak, and micro, indicate female fetuses.) Three positions deep, equal, and unceasing; Chi internal unceasing indicates true pregnant woman. (Cun, Guan, and Chi positions are truly equal in floating/sinking, unbroken when lifted or pressed, and Chi internal unceasing when lifted or pressed, indicates a truly pregnant woman.)
Husband overcomes Wife, so Vertical Qi mists. (Classics say: Zong means Husband overcomes Wife. Water overcomes Fire, Metal overcomes Wood, i.e., Ghost-Thief pulse. Vertical Qi mist: Mist is dew. Also up and down. Means Husband's Yang Qi overcomes Wife's Yin Qi, the two Qi chase each other up and down, like mist and dew, moistening and knotting the seed.) Wife overcomes Husband, so Horizontal Qi assists. (Heng means Wife overcomes Husband. See previous note: horizontal Qi on both sides assists.) Child overcomes Mother, so Reverse Qi participates. (Ni means Child overcomes Mother. Means Child Qi offends Mother Qi, overcoming and reversing Qi participate.) Mother overcomes Child, so Smooth Qi protects. (Obtaining Mother Qi overcoming Child Qi is Smooth, Qi protects each other. Generally, the fetus gathers Vertical, Horizontal, Reverse, and Smooth four Qi to nourish, thus forming shape.) Child days sufficient, fetus gathers; body hot, pulse chaotic, no suffering. (When a woman is five months pregnant, days are sufficient, fetus is complete and gathered. Mother's body must be hot, pulse restless and chaotic, not a symptom of illness. Means at five months fetus is formed, receiving Fire essence to become Qi, so body hot and pulse chaotic, this is no disease.) Sweating, not eating, vomiting and reflux; spirit gathers and resides within. (Means pregnancy receives Five Elements essence and spirit to form shape, inherits two meridians to nourish mother. Pregnancy reaches five months, though fetus formed, Qi not prepared. Thus fetal Qi moves upward to chest and heart, causing sweating, not eating, vomiting and reflux, named E Zu (Morning Sickness). Commonly called Xuan Fan, only craving sour and pungent flavors to regulate fetal Qi.) Slippery and rapid without scattering indicates three months fetus. (Pregnancy at three months is named Shi Tai (Initial Fetus), this has no fixed form, nourished by Pericardium meridian, so pulse appears slippery, rapid, and flowing, indicating less Qi and more Blood. Without scattering indicates abundant Qi and Blood, thus initially knotting to form fetus.) Only rapid without scattering indicates five-month mother. (Pulse only rapid and numerical without scattering indicates a five-month pregnant mother.) String-tight, firm-strong, slippery-smooth is safe; deep-fine and micro leads to spring road. (Pregnant woman's pulse should be string-tight, firm-strong, slippery-smooth, indicating auspicious pulse. If deep-fine and micro, meaning pulse does not correspond to form, thus said to be death. Previous text said Taiyin deep and fine, also said all Yin are female, seeming contradictory, but means three positions pulse are not all deep-fine and micro, thus different.)
Also comprehensive discussion on conception. Classics say: When Shaoyin pulse moves strongly, there is a child. What is the purport? Hand Shaoyin meridian belongs to Heart, Foot Shaoyin meridian belongs to Kidney. Heart governs Blood, Kidney governs Essence. Essence and Blood combine with Qi to form it. However, Bao Men Zi Hu is the meeting place of Essence and Blood, especially verifiable in the Chi position two pulses. Moreover, if woman's Chi position pulse is slippery, it is Blood excess, definitely indicating amenorrhea. If it comes and cuts off, or interrupts and does not arrive, this is all no pregnancy. Only slippery and unceasing, with slight interruption in between, this is the pulse of true fetus form. Woman pregnant, Zang Qi obstructed, cannot sleep much, cannot worry/fear/work hard, cannot eat sticky/spicy/hard foods, also cannot blindly apply acupuncture/moxibustion. Valuable to walk several steps often, adjust freely, let Qi find peace. If wine/flour roasted/explosive foods, heat poison steams; if touching wind pathogen, transmitting heat qi; if mistakenly taking medicine, breaking blood moving fetus; if Seven Emotions internal injury, satisfying desires, then easy to cause leaking fetus. If fetal abdominal pain just came, using force too early; if feeling startled, fetus turning not obtained; if holding incorrectly, running/chasing after; if near delivery many lusts, touching taboos, then difficult birth. After delivery, if overusing mental strength, or originally having phlegm obstruction, or Blood deficiency Qi rebellion, or extreme deficiency riding cold, then Blood Dizziness, fainting, and oppression symptoms arise. However, there are two methods for calming the fetus: if mother's illness causes fetus movement, treat only the mother, fetus calms itself; or if fetal Qi not firm, caused by disturbance leading to mother's illness, then calm fetus and mother heals herself. Use Jiao Ai Tang and Xiong Gui Tang half each, Su Sha assisting is good. Difficult birth agents, previously mentioned Si Wu Tang plus Wu Zhu Yu, enter vinegar stir-fry Hei Shen San, use Ru Xiang decoction to mix down, all important medicines. Postpartum Blood Dizziness, first burn old lacquer vessel smoke, slightly towards nose, then Wu Ling Zhi powder half raw half fried, enter Su He Xiang Wan, boiling water mix give it. Or Hei Shen San enter She Xiang little, mix with Zi Su Tang, or Hua Rui Shi San, use boy's urine, warm wine mix adjust can be. Damaged pregnancy verification method: Woman face color green, hands/feet cold, nails black, and whole body numb, waist/abdominal pain cutting. Or face green lips green, until tongue dark black, mouth corner foam out, then cannot allow human power to overcome. Majorly about to deliver abdominal pain, never startle, and must lean on object to walk, until waist pain child forces birth gate, then can use force. Because Kidney ties to waist, and fetus ties to Kidney reason. Commonly after delivery use Li Zhong Wan, but honey sweet and stagnant, not as good as only using Li Zhong Tang. Commonly newborn infant, mostly use Huang Lian, but Lian bitter hurts Stomach, not as good as only use Gan Cao roast boil, silk dip enter mouth, long time repeatedly use, evil matter self out. Commonly pregnancy formed, mostly take Hua Tai Zhi Ke San, but Zhi Ke slightly cold, must use Su Sha, Wu Yao as assistant. Postpartum diet rice drink do not use. Postpartum washing can first give boiling water. Often regulate Blood with Si Wu, remove stasis with Hei Shen, people all know. If Qi smoothing agents, pre/post pregnancy, especially should combine and use together. Blood dizziness coma, absolutely do not use Jiang Zhen Xiang smoke, to block its Qi.
