Formula for Treating Heat-Induced Opacity Covering the Pupil. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Use sheep tendon (*Ovis aries* tendon). Rinse the mouth and chew thoroughly. At night, while lying down to sleep, open the eyes and insert it. Then close the eyes and sleep. It will heal the next day. It also treats blurred vision caused by foreign bodies entering the eye.
Lixiao Gao (Instantly Disappearing Ointment) (From *Zhizhi Fang*). Treats floating opacity and millet-grain-like opacity. Foggy membrane covering the pupil.
Take snow-white salt. Grind a small amount lightly in a clean vessel. Dip a large rush pith (*Junci Medulla*) into the salt and gently fix the floating opacity to apply. Apply three times. Do not be alarmed if there is no pain.

Formula for Removing Opacity, Generating Blood, and Relieving Pain. (From *Jiacang Jingyan Fang*)
Drip *Melandrium* juice (*Cicada larva juice*, *Qucao zhi*) into the eyes, and consume roasted *Melandrium* with maltose syrup to cure. The Chen family's empirical formula records: In the Jin Dynasty, Sheng Yan's mother went blind and served her personally. Her mother had to be fed manually. After being ill for a long time, the maids and servants often saw her being whipped and scolded. The maid, filled with resentment, took advantage of Sheng Yan's temporary absence, obtained *Melandrium* larvae, roasted them with maltose syrup, and fed them to the mother. The mother found it delicious but suspected it was an unusual object, secretly hid it, and showed it to Sheng Yan. Upon seeing it, Sheng Yan hugged his mother and wept bitterly. His mother fainted and then revived; her eyes suddenly cleared, and she recovered completely thereafter. Mencius said: "Crawling forward to prepare to eat it, swallowing three times, then the ears can hear and the eyes can see." Materia Medica states: "Dripping *Melandrium* juice into the eyes removes opacity." When I was in Qujiang, an officer was discharged from the army due to blindness. Because he read this story in the *Book of Jin*, using Mencius's words to verify the Materia Medica's statement, he called his son, instructed him to secretly prepare it for consumption without letting his father know. Ten days later, his eyesight brightened, and he came to the courtyard to express gratitude. Therefore, I recorded this formula to benefit the public.
Zhijia San (Nail Powder) (From *Longmu Lun*). Treats eye opacity. Also treats various foreign bodies entering the eye.
Take the middle fingernail of the left hand. Wash clean and let dry. Scrape the nail shavings with a knife. Dip a rush pith (*Junci Medulla*) into the powder and apply to the opacity in the eye. One or two applications will remove it. Alternatively, use the nail shavings of a pregnant woman, place them in the eye, and remove the opacity.
Guchui Cao Fang (Drum-Beater Grass Formula) (From *Ren Cun Fang*). Reduces opacity.
Select the single-stem root of the drum-beater grass (*Guchui Cao*), cut one cun in length. Wrap it in thin cotton. Insert it into the nostril. The opacity will recede. Insert according to the affected eye's side.
Shensheng Fen (Divine White Powder). Treats eye opacity.
Moyun Fang (Ink Movement Formula). Treats membrane obstruction in the eye.
Brightens the eyes, removes opacity, and resolves heat toxicity. (From *Bencao*)
Consume *Thlaspi arvense* seeds (*Ximing zi*). Long-term consumption makes vision clear. Harvest the fruit on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month for best results.
Formula for Treating Opacity Growing on the Eye.
Use the greasy dirt from the top of the head, form into pills the size of *Celastrus orbiculatus* seeds. Scrape some powder with a fingernail, place it in the eye, and add a few drops of water. Have the patient lie supine. Rub the eyes with hands. When tears flow from both sides, take a single rush pith (*Junci Medulla*), ignite it in the eye, and the opacity membrane will be removed.
Xuanfuhua San (Inula Flower Powder) (From *Shenghui Fang*). Treats opacity growing from below, and opacity membranes covering the cornea (*Heijing*).
*Xuanfuhua* (Inula flower), Sanggen Baipi (Mulberry root bark, sliced), Lingyangjiao Xie (Antelope horn shaving), Chishao Yao (Red peony root) (each 1 liang); Huanglian (Coptis rhizome, remove stamens), Gancao (Licorice root, each half liang, slightly roasted until red and sliced).
Decoct and strain. Take warm after meals. Avoid roasted or fried pork.
Huanjing Gao (Restore Vision Ointment) (From *Shengji Zonglu*). Treats all types of opacity.
Huanglian (Coptis rhizome, remove stamens), Qiandan (Lead tetroxide, water-floated, each 1 liang), Huangbai (Phellodendron bark, remove coarse skin, half liang), Taoren (Peach kernel, remove skin and tip, double-kernelled), Xingren (Apricot kernel, remove skin and tip, double-kernelled, seven grains each), Longnao (Borneol, ground, half qian), Baisha Mi (White sand honey, 4 liang). Except for Borneol, Lead tetroxide, and Honey,
crush each ingredient.
Use well water
to boil into ointment. Seal tightly in a porcelain box. Bury in the ground overnight to remove fire toxicity. Apply at any time.
Boyun San (Cloud-Pushing Powder) (From *Deshengtang Fang*). Disperses wind toxicity, reduces opacity, and treats red, ulcerated, and dizzy eyes.
Baijili (White Tribulus fruit), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia root), Qianghuo (Notopterygium rhizome), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum rhizome), Jingjie (Schizonepeta spike), Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemum flower), Chantui (Cicada slough) (each 2 liang). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose.
Take with water boiled from Mulberry leaf bark (*Sangbaipi*) after meals.
Shanhuan San (Coral Powder) (From *Shenghui Fang*). Treats red, painful eyes with opacity, blurred distant vision, itching, and dryness.
Shanhu (Coral, 3 fen), Longnao (Borneol, half qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 2 fen). First grind Coral and Cinnabar into powder. Then add Borneol.
Grind evenly. Each
Ruren Jian (Prunus Mume Decoction) (From *Shengji Zonglu*). Treats eye opacity causing dimness. Applies to adult and pediatric eye dryness, swelling, redness, and dull pain.
Ruren (Prunus mume kernel, remove skin and tip, spread on the bottom of a silver cup), Huanglian (Coptis rhizome, remove stamens, wash clean, spread on Ruren, each 2 liang). Use forty-nine ancient copper coins.
Spread
on top of the Coptis. Soak in two cups of well water (*Jinghua Shui*). Ensure the water does not cover the coins. Use four liang of seven-year-old mature mugwort (*Aiye*), tightly packed into one moxa cone. Burn on the ancient copper coins.
Cover the cup mouth tightly to prevent gas escape. After the moxa cone burns out and ash is removed, along with the ancient coins, Coptis, and Prunus kernels, collect the soot/smoke into the water. Add two liang of white honey. Boil together until reduced to one cup. Strain. Then add two fen each of Moschus (Musk) and Borneol, and one qian of Borax. Grind finely and mix into paste. Re-boil, seal tightly, and soak in well water for seven days to remove fire toxicity. Whenever encountering opacity, first wash the eyes with plain hot water. Use rush pith (*Junci Medulla*) to apply medicine into the eye. Three times daily. Avoid wind exposure. Also treats sudden red eye and wind-induced tearing/itching.
Baizhuli Gao (Cypress Bamboo Juice Ointment) (From *Longmu Lun*). Treats all red eye opacities.
Huangbai (Phellodendron bark, remove coarse skin, scrape into fine powder to fill bamboo tube), Cizhu (Bambusa textilis, one segment removing nodes at both ends). Place bricks upright. Put the bamboo on the bricks. Place clean bowls at both ends. Burn dry bamboo to extract juice. Collect all. Apply with hairpin shaft or chopsticks.
Mo Zhangyi Fang (Rubbing Opacity Formula)
Grind chicken eggshell and rub on the affected area.
Formula for Treating Heat Opacity and Red Obstruction. (From *Bencao*)
Use chopped thousand-year vine (*Qiansui Teng*). Soak in water. Blow air from one end to extract vapor/gas. Drip into the eyes.
Shijueming Fang. (From *Longmu Lun*)
Use Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha). Salty, neutral, non-toxic. Mainly treats eye obstruction, opacity, pain, and amaurosis. Cools blood and brightens eyes. Grinding the shell treats eye opacity. Also known as Nine-Hole Snail (*Jiukong Luo*). *Yuanjing* records: The shell of Shijueming is large like a hand, small like two or three fingers. Sea people eat its meat and also use its shell. Soak and wash eyes. Seven-hole or nine-hole shells are good; ten-hole shells are not ideal.
Jueming San (Clear-Sight Powder) (From *Yonglei Linqian Fang*). Treats membrane obstruction.
Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha), Gouqizi (Lycium fruit, soaked in wine overnight), Muzei (Equisetum ramosissimum, remove joints), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta spikelet), Wan Sangye (Late mulberry leaf), Qianghuo (Notopterygium rhizome), Gujingcao (Evodia fruit, remove roots), Fen [Text fragment].
Take 2 qian per dose. Mix with tea liquor.
Gouqi Wan (Lycium Pill) (From *Weisheng Jiabao Fang*). Treats long-standing and recent cases. Opacity membranes obstructing internal and external eye conditions.
Muzei (Equisetum ramosissimum, 1 liang, remove joints, soak in child's urine overnight, wash clean 3-5 times), Gouqizi (Lycium fruit, 1 liang, stir-fry until dry), Jia Juhua (Cultivated chrysanthemum flower, 1 liang, remove stems and leaves), Xi Pi Cangzhu (Atractylodes lancea rhizome, peeled, 3 liang, soak in rice washing water overnight, wash clean). Grind into powder. Refine honey to make pills the size of grain heads. Take one pill per dose. After meals, chew down with good tea.
Shenmiao San (Miraculous Powder) (From *Weisheng Jiabao Fang*). Applies to opacity membranes obstructing the eye.
Puxiao (Mirabilite, 2 liang, placed in tofu and filtered, into clay bowl), Chensha (Vermilion, half qian), Ruxiang (Frankincense, half qian), Xuanmingfen (Mirabilite processed, one fen), Naozi (Borneol, 3 qian), Shexiang (Musk, 3 fen), Danfan (Chalcanthite, half qian), Sha [Text fragment], Nan Pengsha (Southern Borax, half qian). Grind into fine powder.
Apply with copper chopsticks. Grind extremely fine.
Haizhou Sheng Popo Eye Medicine. (From *Weisheng Jiabao Fang*). Treats all opacity and pterygium. Red vessels, fleshy growths. Itching or
pain.
Puxiao (Mirabilite, 1 liang), Pengsha (Borax, ground extremely fine), Zhusha (Cinnabar, ground fine), Naoshe (Borneol and Musk, each a little). Use a clay bowl. Melt Mirabilite over fire into beads. Then add Borax etc., grind finely. Form pills with honey, size of mustard seed. Blow one grain into the eye.
Tongli Gao (Unblocking Ointment) (From *Bao Shi Fang*). Treats opacity obscuring vision, frequent hot tears. (See Tonghe Gao formula)
Wutui San (Five-Shedding Powder) (From *Danliao Fang*). Treats eye opacity.
Chantui (Cicada slough), Shetui (Snake slough), Cantuike (Silkworm slough), Zhuetui Ti [Text fragment], Lingli Jia (Manis scale), Juhua (Chrysanthemum flower), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia root), Cao Jueming (Abutilon seed?), Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha), Gancao (Licorice root) (equal parts). Above
Qinpi Wan (Fraxinus Bark Pill) (From *Shengji Zonglu*). Treats sticky eye opacity.
Qinpi (Fraxinus bark, remove coarse skin), Huangbai (Phellodendron bark, remove coarse skin and roast), Huangqin (Scutellaria root, remove black heart), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia root, remove forked tips), Chaihu (Bupleurum root, remove seedlings), Huanglian (Coptis rhizome, remove stamens, each 1 liang), Weirui (Polygonatum rhizome, roasted), Mutong (Akebia stem, sliced, each 1.5 liang), Gancao (Licorice root, roasted, half liang). Grind into powder. Refine honey to make pills.
