In human dysentery, the color of the discharge may be green, white, or black; these are all Cold Dysentery (dysentery caused by cold pathogen). This is due to the weakness of the intestines and stomach, allowing cold qi to invade. Consequently, it causes the passage of black or green bloody stool. If the dysenteric discharge is white and food is not digested, this indicates Cold in the Middle Jiao. One should examine the pulse: if the pulse is Deep (Chen), prognosis is good (life); if the pulse is Floating (Fu), prognosis is poor (death). If a person has accumulated cold in their body constitution, they will develop chronic dysentery; this cold dysentery involves pus.
