The disease of Ten Waters (Shi Shui) presents with edema starting from the feet. Accompanied by Qi rebellion and coughing, it is named Bai Shui (White Water), with its root in the Lung (Fei). Edema starting from the face and eyes is named Qing Shui (Green Water), with its root in the Liver (Gan). Edema starting from the eye sockets is named Huang Shui (Yellow Water), with its root in the Spleen (Pi). Edema starting from the abdomen is named Qi Shui (Qi Water), alternating between excess and deficiency, with its root in the Large Intestine (Da Chang). Edema starting from the thighs is named Hei Shui (Black Water), with its root in the Kidney (Shen). Edema starting from the head and face down to the feet is named Xuan Shui (Hanging Water), with its root in the Gallbladder (Dan). Edema starting from within the abdomen with hard masses and swelling of the four limbs is named Shi Shui (Stone Water), with its root in the Bladder (Pang Guang). Edema starting from the four limbs with abdominal distension is named Feng Shui (Wind Water), with its root in the Small Intestine (Xiao Chang). Edema starting from the chest is named Chi Shui (Red Water), with its root in the Heart (Xin).
For diseases of the Zang-Fu organs, one must trace back to their root and investigate their origin. Thus, it is primarily the Lung and Kidney. Therefore, the *Neijing* (Inner Canon) states: "Its root is in the Kidney, its branch is in the Lung." It also says: "When body fluids fill the thoracic cavity, Po (Corporeal Soul) dwells alone; when essence is isolated within and Qi dissipates outside, the form becomes so emaciated that clothes no longer fit." This is because Kidney Qi deficiency leads to Qi distension, attacking upward to the Lung, leaving Lung Qi isolated and critical. The Kidney suffers from Water pathogen, and since the Child cannot rescue the Mother, Yin Essence is damaged internally and Yang Qi decreases externally. The pulse is choppy, water passages are blocked, water fills the skin, and the body swells. The methods of treatment are fully detailed in the *Neijing*. The *Jing* (Canon) says: "Balance through weighing, remove accumulated decay, slightly move the four extremities, wear warm clothing, apply Miao Ci (Needling at asymmetrical points) at the affected areas, to restore the form, open the Ghost Gate (Gui Men, i.e., pores/sweat glands), purify the Clean House (Jing Fu, i.e., bladder), allow essence to be taken in time, let the Five Yang Qi spread, dredge and cleanse the Five Zang organs, thus essence generates naturally, form becomes complete, flesh and bone protect each other, and the Great Qi becomes peaceful."
