云。膀胱移热于小腹。膈肠不便。上口为糜。易老五苓散。与导赤散。相合而饮之。
[White Alum Formula]
Take calcined white alum (Bai Fan, 白矾) one liang (calcined to half a liang), and lead tetroxide (Huang Dan, 黄丹) one liang (stir-fried until red, then until purple). Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Sprinkle directly onto the sores for immediate healing. Another formula:
Tang Zhongju's Chuanwu Powder (Chuanwu San, 川乌散) [from *Cun Fang*, also known as Ersheng San / Two Sages Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers covering the entire mouth, caused by deficiency fire congesting and attacking upwards. Method for applying to palms and soles. For pediatric mouth ulcers with sore throat.
Aconitum carmichaelii deoxydiacetylated root (Chuanwu, 川乌) and Cornus officinalis fruit (Zhu Yu, 茱萸) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Before sleep, mix with vinegar to form a paste, apply to the soles of feet and palms. Cover with oiled paper and cloth, secure firmly. Remove the next day.
[Huangdan Paste]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Lead tetroxide (Huang Dan, 黄丹) four qian, honey (Feng Mi, 蜂蜜) one liang. Boil down into a paste. Apply to mouth ulcers.
[Xiaoshi Powder]
[from *Jingyan Liangfang*]
Treats painful mouth ulcers, cracked lips. Also treats heat sores.
Mirabilite (Puxiao, 朴硝) and Halloysitum Rubrum (Hanshuishi, 寒水石) (one qian each, select high-quality pieces). Grind into fine powder. Add a small amount of cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂), mix evenly to a red color. Apply to sores. Safe if swallowed. Bitter taste.
[Huanjin Powder]
[from *Haishang Fang*]
Treats toxic heat mouth ulcers. Or due to lower jiao deficiency with unbearable pathogenic heat.
Dried ginger (Ganjiang, 干姜) two qian, Coptis chinensis rhizome (Huanglian, 黄连) three qian. Grind into powder. Sprinkle on sores. If initially intolerable, heals immediately. Effective. Repeated applications lead to cure.
[Yuanzhi Powder]
[from *Weishi Fang*]
Treats mouth ulcers. Immediate effect.
Chinese gall (Wubeizi, 五倍子) half a liang, Polygala tenuifolia root (Yuanzhi, 远志) (decored, half a liang). Grind into powder. Sprinkle on tongue. Spit out saliva; sores heal. Another method: Use only Wubeizi powder sprinkled on tongue.
[Qingfan Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Raw white alum (Sheng Bai Fan, 生白矾) and Verdigris (Tongqing, 铜青) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder. Mix with "reverse-flowing water" (Dao Liu Shui, 倒流水) to the size of a character ("yi zi", approx. 0.5-1g). Hold in mouth for the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, then spit out. Effective.
[Fuling Decoction]
Treats painful mouth ulcers.
Poria cocos sclerotium (Fuling, 茯苓) and Ginseng radix (Renshen, 人参) (one liang each). Cut into pieces. Divide into four doses. Each dose boiled with two cups of water until one cup remains. Strain. Take warm, three times daily. Discontinue if ineffective.
[Qiangweigen Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers recurring annually with difficulty eating.
Rose root (Qiangweigen, 蔷薇根) (a handful, chopped), Sichuan pepper (Shujiao, 蜀椒) (remove eyes and closed-mouth peppers, stir-fry until sweat appears, take 49 grains). Make into a powder. Boil with two cups of fermented rice water (Jiangshui, 浆水) for five to seven boils. Strain.
[Huashi Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Talcum (Huashi, 滑石) and Chalcanthite (Danfan, 胆矾) (one liang each). Grind into powder. Take one or two spoonsful, wrap in cotton, hold in mouth, spit out saliva.
[Shengjiang Decoction]
Treats painful mouth ulcers.
Fresh ginger juice (Shengjiang Zhi, 生姜汁) one cup, white sand honey (Baisha Mi, 白沙蜜) three liang. Boil together for over ten boils. Store in porcelain. Mix one spoonful with hot water, hold in mouth and swallow.
[Shexiang Powder]

Treats mouth ulcers, lip sores, chronic non-healing.
Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) (small amount), Human tooth and bone ash (Renzhongbai, 人中白) one qian. Grind finely. Form pills with honey, wrap in cotton, size of mung bean. Hold in mouth, swallow saliva. Another method: Grind evenly and apply to sores.
[Erwu Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Bombyx batryticatus (Bai Jiangcan, 白僵蚕) and Coptis chinensis rhizome (Huanglian, 黄连) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Sprinkle into mouth before sleep.
[Fuyan Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Chinese gall (Wubeizi, 五倍子) and Litharge (Miduoseng, 密陀僧) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder. Rinse mouth with fermented rice water first. Apply dry powder. Another method: Use Miduoseng mixed with vinegar for gargling. Do not swallow.
[Niubangzi Powder]

Treats chronic mouth ulcers.
Arctium lappa seed (Niubangzi, 牛蒡子) one liang (lightly stir-fried), Licorice root (Gancao, 甘草) one liang (honey-fried until slightly red, chopped). Make into powder. Take three qian per dose. Boil with one cup of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain.
[Han Hua Ci Huang Wan]

Treats mouth ulcers with excessive phlegm-saliva, chronic non-healing.
Orpiment (Ci Huang, 雌黄) one fen (finely ground), Toad venom (Chansu, 蟾酥) half fen. Mix, store in porcelain, steam in a rice steamer for the duration of cooking a meal until cooked. Cool.
Form pills the size of millet seeds. Wrap one pill in cotton, hold in mouth, swallow saliva.

Treats chronic mouth ulcers.
Toad venom (Chansu, 蟾酥) half fen, Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) half fen. Grind into powder. Form pills the size of millet seeds. Wrap one pill in cotton, hold in mouth. Spit out when saliva accumulates.
[Qinjiao Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers due to consumptive disease, chronic non-healing.
Qin Jiao (Qinjiao, 秦艽) (remove sprouts and soil), Bupleurum root (Chaihu, 柴胡) (remove sprouts, one liang each). Grind into powder. Take three qian per dose. Slice pork liver three liang, boil in wine. Remove liver, take the juice.
[Hufen Powder]

Treats oral canker sores. Mysterious efficacy. Hold in mouth.
Lead carbonate (Hufen, 胡粉) one liang, Realgar-derived bovine calculus (Niuhuang, 牛黄) one liang. Mix, place in a tripod pot. Grind evenly over warm ashes. Hold small amounts in mouth. Cures.
[Shanzili Decoction Pill]

Treats oral canker. Mysterious efficacy. Hold in mouth.
Mountain plum root (Shanzili Gen, 山李子根, also called Niuzili), Rose root (Qiangweigen, 蔷薇根) (wild is better). Finely chop five sheng. Boil in five dou of water for half a day. Reduce juice in silver vessel to paste.
Apply close to the area. This formula cured it.
[Contemporary Formula for Mouth Ulcers]
Mouth ulcers prickling with continuous crying, grind malachite green and musk together. Dry and rub frequently on the sores. Not more than two applications bring peace.
[Secretly Transmitted Jiangqi Decoction]

Treats mouth ulcers due to deficiency heat congesting upwards.
Boil fresh ginger (Shengjiang, 生姜) and Perilla leaf (Suye, 苏叶). Swallow Black Tin Pill (Heixi Dan, 黑锡丹) before meals. Twenty pills per dose.
[Hufen Paste]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Use one liang of Hufen (Lead Carbonate, 胡粉), stir-fry and grind. Mix with butter/suet to form a paste. Hold an amount the size of an almond in mouth. Swallow saliva.
[Shensheng Paste]
[from *Weishi Fang*, also known as Zhuyu Paste]
Treats mouth ulcers due to lower cold, and sore throat.
Take Evodia fruit (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸), remove floating ones, one liang, grind to fine powder. Mix with one large cup of vinegar, boil into paste. Then add half a liang of earthworm powder (Dilong Mo, 地龙末) and raw yeast, stir evenly.
Before sleep, wash feet with scallion and pepper water, dry. Apply medicine to both soles. Secure with cloth/cotton. Must reduce next day. Reapply if no reduction. Can be used for newborns. Another method: Use Pinellia ternata powder (Tiannanxing Mo, 天南星末) mixed with vinegar applied to soles. Left for males, right for females.
[Chansu Thread]
Treats mouth ulcers. Haishang Fang says: Treats sores above and below, unable to eat.
Take two slices of Chansu (Toad Venom, 蟾酥), soak in half a cup of water until dissolved. Add one qian of Niuhuang (Realgar-derived bovine calculus, 牛黄) powder, mix well. Soak fifty silk threads in the medicine overnight.
Remove.
[Douchi Powder]

Treats mouth/lip sores, tongue sores, chest/diaphragm pain.
Take four liang of Fermented soybean (Douchi, 豆豉), stir-fry, pound, and sieve into powder. Wrap one qian in cotton. Hold in mouth. Five to seven times daily. Another method: Soak overnight, stir-fry, grind, and apply.
[Ganchan Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Take one dried toad skin (Ganchansu, 干蟾酥), roast, pound, and grind into powder. Wrap half a qian in cotton. Hold in mouth, spit out saliva.
[Mayaxiao Powder]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Take one liang of Mayaxiao (Halloysitum, 马牙硝) as powder. Hold one qian in mouth. Swallow saliva. Three to five times daily. Another method: Use Puxiao (Mirabilite, 朴硝).

Take five he of white juice from Paulownia wood (Qiumu Baizhi, 楸木白汁). Take one spoonful per dose. Hold and swallow. Another method: Apply wet skin. Cures.
[Jini Decoction]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Take thirty branches of Jini (Cardamine hirsuta, 荠苨), wrap in thin cotton. Boil in wine for twenty boils. Remove. Hold one branch at a time. Chew and swallow after a while. Three to five times daily.
[Shengma Holding Juice Formula]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Take any amount of Cimicifuga rhizome (Shengma, 升麻). Hold a piece in mouth, swallow saliva.
[Heyegen Decoction]
Treats mouth ulcers.
Take two liang of Lotus root stem (Heyegen, 荷根), finely chop. Divide into three parts. Each part boiled with two cups of water for three to five boils. Strain. Hold hot, spit when cool.
[Qianshang Powder]

Lactose (Rutang, 乳糖) four liang, Chalcanthite (Danfan, 胆矾) eight zhu (crushed). Boil with one and a half bowls of water until Rutang and Danfan dissolve into juice. Take about one bowl. Pour out and cool. Store in new tile vessel. Pick up two or three drops with chopsticks, place in painful sore. Wait a moment, spit out, swallow hot saliva. Immediately safe and effective.
[Hongshaoyao Powder]
[from *Weisheng Baojian Fang*] Heart disease mouth ulcers. Purple, orange, red, pale. Three qian four liang. Five doses bring health.
Perilla leaf (Zisu, 紫苏), Platycodon root (Jiegeng, 桔梗), Red peony root (Hong Shaoyao, 红芍药), Atractylodes rhizome (Cangzhu, 苍术) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder. Split four liang of sheep liver. Grind into powder and sprinkle. If tongue is swollen and hard, use Barnyard grass ash (Baicaoshuang, 百草霜) and Salt (Yan, 盐) in equal parts.
Mix with well-water to apply. If swollen, hard, and bleeding, use Cuttlebone (Haipiaoxiao, 海螵蛸) and Lygodium spore (Puhuang, 蒲黄) in equal parts. Grind into powder and apply.

At night. Tighten two pills. Cross hands left and right. Rub thirty to fifty times. Perform whenever waking from sleep. Do this three to five times. If caused by dampness, cures in one night. Chronic illness, various mouth ulcers, cures in two to three nights. If accompanied by clear nasal discharge, tighten two pills, rub for several nights, can cure. *Neijing* says: Bladder transfers heat to lower abdomen, diaphragm/intestines inconvenient, upper mouth becomes mush. Combine Yilao's Wuling San (Wuling San, 五苓散) and Daochi San (Daochi San, 导赤散) and drink together.
