The mouth is the gateway for food and drink. The tongue is the external organ of the Heart, responsible for tasting the five flavors and distributing Qi to the five Zang organs. The collateral vessels of the Heart connect to the root of the tongue. The collateral vessels of the Liver connect to the sides of the tongue.
Tongue Ulceration
Cold causes a salty taste in the mouth; deficiency causes a bland taste; Spleen cold causes a sweet taste; retained food causes a sour taste; irritability causes an astringent taste. These are all related to the fluids of the mouth, which communicate with the five Zang organs. When the Qi of a Zang organ is excessive, the taste in the mouth corresponds accordingly. Fatigue and stagnation may cause bad breath; stagnation leads to ulceration. Those with ulcers cannot sleep well at night nor nap during the day; violating this rule will worsen the condition. The lips belong entirely to the Spleen; diseases of the lips should generally be treated by regulating the Spleen according to the syndrome. Teeth are the surplus of bone; the mouth is the portal for eating and drinking. Therefore, when Kidney essence declines, teeth become loose and fall out; when essence is abundant, teeth are firm. Additionally, the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian enter the teeth and irrigate the Large Intestine. Obstruction causes tooth swelling; deficiency causes gum recession.
Throat Involvement
If the throat is obstructed, it affects the internal organs. Heat causes swelling; cold causes contraction, both leading to throat closure. Wind-dryness acts similarly. Chronic cough from the five Zang organs causes hoarseness; hoarseness indicates damage to the larynx, not a disease of the pharyngeal gate. If the pharynx is swollen, swallowing is impossible; if dry, swallowing is difficult. Excessive consumption of spicy and hot foods, or repeated vomiting, can injure the pharynx through dryness. This differs from laryngeal diseases. There is also sudden swelling of the uvula (Xuan Yong), blocking the throat, resembling throat closure, but located higher up near the soft palate.
