The Lung Qi is obstructed and full. There is heat in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner). Water intake remains stagnant in the chest and epigastrium, clashing with the heat, stagnating and accumulating to form Phlegm (Tan Yin, pathological fluid accumulation). The Lung governs Qi. Now, pathogenic heat clashes with Lung Qi, causing the Qi mechanism to be blocked and astringent, unable to diffuse and circulate freely. This results only in vexation and oppression in the heart and chest, and unfavorable movement of stagnant Phlegm. Thus, it causes coughing with thick and sticky sputum.
