Qi within the human body expands and flows smoothly when warmed, but becomes stagnant and obstructed when exposed to cold. The Lung governs Qi. If injured by cold pathogenic factors, Qi stagnates and fails to flow freely. Consequently, Qi rebels and moves upward, manifesting as cough. If Lung Qi is deficient, during respiration, inhalation cannot reach its depth (failure to grasp Qi), thus it is termed "Ke Ni Duan Qi" (Rebellious Cough with Shortness of Breath).
