Treats symptoms where food and drink cannot pass down, causing extreme distress bordering on death.
Use the gallbladder of a Li fish (a type of freshwater fish) collected in the twelfth lunar month. Dry it in the shade, grind into powder, and apply to the throat. The medicine takes effect immediately upon reaching the lesion. If the disease is deep-seated, mix with water and administer orally. Another method: Use the stems and leaves of Rubus species (e.g., Raspberry plant), burn them to ash.
Treats throat obstruction preventing swallowing, requiring needle puncture to drain pus.
Use a small-mouthed bottle containing burning smoke from Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, 蛇床子). Open the mouth to inhale the smoke; one fumigation session will rupture the abscess.
Run Guan Zhu Tong Formula (from *Wei Shi Fang*)
Grind fresh Mentha haplocalyx (Bohe, 薄荷), mix with honey to form a paste, and insert into the lower throat for immediate relief. If excessive phlegm remains, repeat. If still obstructed, extend treatment up to the vertex.
Alternatively, take two scallion bulbs, crush them, and place them at the head of the bed near the teeth; this will open the throat miraculously.
Jing Zhi Formula (from *Sheng Hui Fang*), treats Pharyngolaryngeal Obstruction (Hou Bi).
Swallow Jing Li (the juice extracted from Schizonepeta tenuifolia, Jingjie, 荆芥) slowly. Alternatively, boil a handful of Jingjie in three sheng of water, extract one sheng of liquid, and divide into three doses.
Ginger and Honey Decoction (from *Sheng Hui Fang*), treats Pharyngolaryngeal Obstruction (Hou Bi) and toxic vapors (heat-toxins).
Take two jin of fresh ginger, crush to extract juice, mix with five he of honey, and simmer gently until combined. Take one he per dose, five times daily.
Another Prescription (from *Zhou Hou Fang*)
Insert peeled garlic cloves into the nostrils, replacing twice daily.
Treatment for Sudden Aphonia due to Pharyngolaryngeal Obstruction (from *Zhou Hou Fang*)
Consume one sheng of thickly boiled Cinnamomi Ramulus decoction (Guizhi Tang base/Guizhi juice). Alternatively, grind Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝) into powder, place under the tongue, and swallow gradually. Effective.
Another Prescription (also known as Xuan Yin Tang, from *Zhou Hou Fang*)
Hold large soybean (Sojae Semen Preparatum/Douchi context) juice in the mouth. If beans are unavailable, fermented soybeans (Douchi, 豆豉) are also suitable.

Take ashes from burnt cooking grates, measure three finger-widths, and swallow with water. Another method: Burn cooking brushes to powder, swallow one bi with grain water.

Apply mustard seed powder (Bai Jie Zi, 白芥子) mixed with water as a topical compress; change when dry. Another method: Mix with honey and water, apply externally below the throat; change when dry.
Treatment for severe Pharyngolaryngeal Obstruction (Hou Bi) with swelling extending to the cheeks and rapid breathing, named "Horse Throat Obstruction" (Ma Hou Bi). Prescription (from *Sheng Hui Fang*)
Boil one horse bit (Mare's muzzle piece) in two sheng of water, reduce to one sheng, and divide into three doses.
Another Prescription (from *Sheng Hui Fang*)
Take thirty-seven Xanthii Fructus (Cang Er Zi, 苍耳子) found in felt, burn to ash, and swallow with water.
Another Prescription (from *Sheng Hui Fang*), treats Horse Throat Obstruction with severe swelling to the cheeks and rapid breathing.
Take a handful of Peucedani Radix (Matian Gen, 马鞭草根), protect from wind, cut off both ends, crush to extract juice, and ingest.

Burn grain residue ash, swallow with wine. Immediate effect.
Treatment for Rapidly Spreading Throat Obstruction (from *Ru Men Shi Qin*)
Grind raw Alum (Bai Fan, 白矾) finely, apply to a cotton-tipped probe, and press against the throat for immediate relief. The cotton probe is made by wrapping cotton around an elm twig to the size of a date pit. Another method: Grind alum into powder, dissolve in water, and administer orally for immediate effect.
Another Prescription (from *Sheng Hui Fang*)
Insufflate Pleurotus tuber-regium (Ma Bo, 马勃) into the throat for immediate relief. Another method: Administer thickly boiled decoction orally.
Treatment for Winding Throat Wind (You Gao Jing Yan Liang Fang), treating throat abscesses, inability to swallow medicine, and throat closure syndromes.
Use Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zao Jiao Ci, 皂角刺) in any quantity, scrape the bark, and soak in raw sesame oil (Sheng Ma You, 生麻油); older oil is preferred. Upon onset, drip oil into the mouth to induce vomiting or pus discharge, bringing relief. Another method omits sesame oil.
Treatment for Unilateral/Bilateral Tonsillitis (Ru E) due to Throat Wind (from *Rui Zhu Tang Fang*)
Take one earth wasp nest from a wall, grind to fine powder. First, rub the patient's tongue with a paper mulberry leaf (Chu Ye, 楮叶) until slight bleeding occurs. Mix the wasp nest powder with vinegar, dip a goose feather in the mixture, and twist inside the throat until cold phlegm and saliva are expelled. Afterwards, mash Arisaema cum Baccis (Bian Zhu Gen, 扁竹根/土贝母 context) with cold water and have the patient drink only three mouthfuls to promote urination.
Emergency Treatment for Throat Wind (*Rui Zhu Tang Fang*)
Take a handful of Junci Medulla (Deng Cao, 灯心草), remove both ends. Place in a new tile, cover with another new tile, and burn to ash. Stir-fry one large spoonful of salt in the same tile until preserved. Mix both powders. Using a reed tube, insufflate a pinch of the mixture into the throat. Expulsion of phlegm indicates efficacy. Two to three insufflations lead to cure.
Treatment for Pharyngolaryngeal Obstruction (Hou Bi).
Crush Arrowhead Grass leaves, mix with a little sauce, dip a brush into the mixture, and insert into the throat to induce vomiting. This grass grows along village fences, blooming with small white flowers resembling bells in summer and autumn; leaves resemble those of Costus root.

Wrap raw alum powder in white plum flesh, form pills, and insert into the throat. Another method: Form pills with Jiang tea (green tea), hold in mouth to dissolve and swallow.
Treatment for Winding Throat Wind (from *Hai Shang Ming Fang*)
Mix alum powder with sesame oil and egg white, swallow. Vomiting leads to recovery.

Mix half a bowl of water and half a bowl of wine. Add two crushed soap pods, boil to half a bowl. When warm, inject into the patient's nostrils. Recovery occurs when wind-phlegm is coughed out.
Another Prescription (from *Hai Shang Fang*), treats Pharyngolaryngeal Obstruction (Hou Bi).
Use Pennisetum sinese (Yang Mao, 羊茅, cattle feed), extract juice, and ingest. Immediate effect.
Another Prescription (from *Hai Shang Fang*)
Decoct Bai Du San (Eliminate Toxin Powder) with Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) and Pinellia (Banxia, 半夏). Particularly effective.
Treatment for Pharyngolaryngeal Obstruction (Hou Bi).
Burn rice straw to produce smoke (similar to ink-making process). Collect fine smoke, mix with sour vinegar, insufflate into nostrils. If swallowable, use a reed tube to guide down the throat. After a moment, rolling over induces expulsion of phlegm.
Tu Xian San (Expel Phlegm Powder, from *Jing Yan Liang Fang*), treats Throat Wind with dysphagia and inability to eat.
Decoct 2.5 qian of Dolichos Lablab Seed (He Shi, 鹤虱) with one zhan of wine and a little vinegar until reduced to half a zhan. Swallow to induce vomiting of toxic phlegm, bringing relief.
Treatment for Winding Throat Bi-Wind (from *Jing Yan Liang Fang*)
Crush Xanthium root and old ginger together, filter juice. Soak juice in warm unfermented white wine and ingest.
Treatment for Throat Closure (Hou Bi) (from *Yi Fang Ji Cheng*)
Freshly crush Drumstick Grass (Gu Chui Cao, 鼓槌草) and Achyranthes bidentata (Tu Niu Xi, 土牛膝). Extract juice and administer orally. Alternatively, insufflate into nostrils; vomiting indicates cure. Another method uses Drumstick Grass.
Another Prescription (from *Yi Fang Ji Cheng*)
Use Linderia japonica root (Tu Wu Yao/Ai Zhang Gen, 土乌药/矮樟根). Decoct two cups of sour vinegar to one cup. Hold in mouth then swallow. Cure indicated by expulsion of phlegm.
Zhang Tou San (Curtain Head Powder, from *Jing Yan Liang Fang*), treats nocturnal aphonia due to Throat Closure, a critical condition. Though not highly curative, it opens the throat allowing speech.
Place Alum (Bai Fan, 白矾) in the corner of a blue or green curtain. When needed, chew the curtain-Alum mixture and swallow juice. If no curtain is available, place alum in blue/green cloth, moisten with water, chew, and swallow juice. Even without alum, chewing wet blue/green fabric juice is acceptable.
Treatment for sudden aphonia due to Throat Closure.
Hold thickly boiled Cinnamon Twig juice (Guizhi juice) or large black soybean juice in the mouth. Best. If Cinnamon is unavailable, crush Hemp Seed (Huomazi, 火麻子), decoct, and hold in mouth.
Treatment for Emergency Throat Wind, Throat Closure, and Winding Throat Wind.
