Chapter: Falling from Carriages and Horses (With Discussion) (2/2) / Treating Various Fractures with Washing, Hot Compresses, and Patches (With Discussion)
Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
There was a historian named Shi in Chang'an. He often walked on major thoroughfares. Someone called out his surname from behind, saying, "I have no requests of you, but I know you face difficulties, so I have come to save you." He handed Shi a scroll, saying, "Use it when in distress." It turned out to be a book of prescriptions for treating fractures and internal/external injuries. The following year, while rushing to court, his horse was struck by another, causing his leg to fracture and him to fall to the ground; his arm was also crushed and fractured by a hoof. His family hastily prepared this medicine, administering it orally while bandaging the wounds. By midnight, the pain ceased. Later, his hands and feet became firm and strong, as if they had never been injured. This formula is sourced from *Liangfang* (Good Prescriptions).
Usage: Use Chuan Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Qian Fen (Lead Carbonate), each half liang, and Peng Sha (Borax), three qian. Grind them together into a fine powder. Decoct Su Mu (Sappan Wood) juice thickly, mix one da qian of the powder with it, and take orally. If the injury is above the waist, drink half a zhan of light congee first, then take the medicine; if below the waist, take the medicine first, then eat. Also, frequently sip Su Mu juice. Additionally, mix the medicine powder with rice water, spread evenly on paper or silk, and apply as a patch to the injured area. If bones are shattered, fix them with bamboo splints, then wrap with paper or clothing, ensuring the paper seals air tight; gauze or silk is suitable. Its efficacy is thus described, hence it is published here.
For treating injuries from falling off horses, where blood stasis remains internally causing restlessness and oppression:
Take three liang of apricot branches growing towards the east, finely chopped. Add three sheng of good wine, heat slightly, and boil until it boils more than ten times. Strain the dregs. Divide into two doses. Take on an empty stomach; take the second dose after walking for about three to four li.
Generally, fractures and injuries vary in severity, depth, duration, and recency. Treatment methods differ between oral administration, washing, hot compresses, and patches. One must carefully assess the nature of the injury, as medicines that remove toxicity, dissipate stagnation, generate flesh, and promote healing follow specific sequences. Avoid errors and confusion to understand the root and branch of fractures.
Shenyan Mofeng Shexiang Gao (Divine Efficacy Musk Anti-Wind Ointment) [Source: *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats fractures, dislocations, tendon and bone injuries, dark swelling, and pain, as well as external wind-toxin attacks causing facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes).
